There's something about the conductor walking off that will always chill me to the bone. It's almost as if God were conducting someones life throughout and then at the very end just steps off and lets the person die. It's so symbolic and just feels right. When the harmony finally comes it's such a relief. Beautiful.
This is my favorite vocal piece. And I had the fortunate pleasure of being able to be in an AMAZING choral group and perform this.
I cry EVERY TIME I hear this piece... There are absolutely no words I can use to describe what it was like the first time we sang this... It was on par with the births of my daughters, if that says anything....
@DJPhear I'm glad to hear it's not just me. This is the most incredibly moving piece. I tried to tell a friend about it yesterday, and couldn't even finish my description for the uncontrollable bawling.
Bach created a sound of the journey from life into death.
I get shivers whenever I hear this, and what I wouldn't give to be a part of a performance!
When I watched a performance of this, half of the singers had tears streaming down their faces by the end, and the audience was left crying and awestricken. This is truly a sound that must be heard in person.
If you listen closely, you can hear bells ringing :D Awesome harmonics!
This is taken from Edwin London's concept of "Aleatoric" or 'chance' composition. It utilizes a strict set of measures taken out of context from the piece and each individual singer is allowed (if done correctly) to sing at his/her own pace, within the given structure of measures, ending at a selected cadence point. It is my opinion that the hand gestures take away from the overall effect...which is often described as being not dissimilar to an orchestral warm-up.
I've sang this before, and the bass part is not difficult at all. There are a few skips and even fewer leaps. There are some accidentals, but its not that long of a piece so it gives the choir more time to work out those parts.
im in an honors choir and we have to learn the gestures and the song in 5 days to preform on this saturday, , ,we were just handed the music yesterday and we dont meet again until the day of the performance.
ahh we did this NYSSSA SCS'08, but we did it by the book, and we stopped at death, rest, and homeward. the techniques were similar though. Nice Jobe you guys!!!
my choir performed this piece and i have fallen in love with it. you guys have done an AWESOME job, only a few minor tweaks i should say, but AMAZING nonetheless. my choir, however, did not do the hand movements and the chord building at the end, that truly pulled it together even more than the ending chord did. i was teary-eyed for real.

They're too young for this piece; the bass part is too advanced for the men's voices.

What's with all the swaying? When you are in performance, you should not sway back and forth, only bend the knees slightly to avoid lockup.

Bullshit back to you baby, I have a Master's in Music Ed. I wasn't talking about bobbing up and down at the knees, only to keep them flexed.

This deserves some passion. Cut off sometimes.
We did different motions.
People said that when my choir performed it, it was bone-chilling and eerie.
I never knew how eerie it was while singing it.
Thank you for letting me know.
