  • beautiful voice sandy was a brilliant interpreter of classic folk songs . check out her versions of tom paxtons ramblin boy and the last thing on my mind . the johnstons recorded the definitive version of this tune though . the late lamented sandy and adrienne johnston are probably up in heaven singing rare melodies in perfect harmony

  • Such a shame she's dead. She was so good.

  • very interesting video thanks

  • love the video man

  • theres a song in this vocal mess somewhere....what a fkn trajedy for a great song

  • @wdobni well said sir, she's no' karen matheson lol

  • @wdobni This is not as good as Karen Mathieson & Capercaille's version but it's not a Vocal mess as You call it, But Karen Mathiesons version of Who Knows Where the Time Goes probably wouldn't be as good as Sandy Denny & Fairport Convention's version, Sandy Denny was a brilliant Singer/ Musician & Karen Still is,

  • This song can not express itself so clearly as it does in the gaelic language in which it was written.I do enjoy the way Sandy Denny has done this..Moran taing a'shandaidh.

  • There is definitely something African in this song, as lies in British musicality as a whole. A solid root grown long before any arid Aryan influences. Sandy Denny is representing this in the very purest form. The sun is turning north again on this 25.Dec. but the coldest days yet to come; good to have this song as something warming!

  • Speachless.

  • wonderful

  • A unique voice and talent.

  • search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful english folk music which has echoes of denny and drake.

  • Her voice is radiant, pure and real. There are angels in the world.

  • Fear a bhata no horo eil'e... There's not a hamlet too well I know it where you go wandering or stay a while but all its old folk you win wi' talking and charm it's maidens with song and smile Fhear a bhata no horo eil'e... Does thou remember the promise made me the tartan plaidie the silken gown the ring of gold with your hair and portrait? that gown and ring I will never know Fhear a bhata no horo eil'e...
  • sooo beautiful, sooo sad....

  • Paddy Bell did this with the Corries. My folks had the LP, I fell in love with the song at a very young age. Paddy also had that ethereally high bubbly thing going on in her voice. Yum.

  • Cosmic performance and spirit. One of my favourite songs of all time.

  • beautiful voice

  • My sister almost named her son (Scott) Tam Lin based on Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention's song. This is a pretty tune. I've been listening to other versions, including the original gaelic. She has such a fine voice here. We were born in the same year, 11 months apart.

  • Ive got the chords of the version in songs of ireland even tho its supposed to be scottish but she doesnt use all the same chords after the first couple shes a genius who does her own unique version of this song and it doesnt sound like anyone else

would you like me to send those chords which are the same as used by capercaillie?im asking cos ill have to have a look for the?

  • Does anyone know what chords she's playin?

  • Sad she didnt do more with Robert Plant then one song.

  • I have always loved this song & have listened to the many versions posted on Youtube. Covers by famous singers/ groups as well as unknown singers covering it. Although there are some good ones.......no one can sing it like Sandy Denny. Some versions I have heard are more orchestrated ( I don't care for) & or I just did not care for the singer''s particular cover. Although I like songs by Capercaillie, I did not even like their version. Corrie Folk Trio has a good one. Sandy's is # 1 for me.

  • Woooow!! One of the best things Ive ever heard

  • What a voice! And if you look at her photos, her eyes are just haunting. Bok, Trickett & Muir do a version of this that's quite different - nice in its own way.

  • @ladysonja - or....ANYONE who might know....

I need this question answered, it's bothering me.

Why are all the versions of this song by Rebecca Pidgeon coming up "banned" for US?

Other players besides youtube.com have it scratched and banned as well.... same with some of Rebecca's other songs... I want to know..."why?"

  • is there any film of Sandy on youtube? i can't find any

  • just brilliant

  • Excellant real Celtic feel lovely, thanks for the post

  • Truly beautiful

  • It's of some consequence, that nearly all Sandy's songs are about the sea. At one point in "Next time Around" the cryptic lyric "Maybe the ocean next time around". Which leads to the 2nd consequence. Alot of her songs, like Nick Drake's intimate death. Like they had some premonition of their individual & inevitible futures. Perhaps they sensed (at some base level) the intensity of the talent within was a cause for shorting their lives. The candle being aware it's burning twice as brightly.

  • @MoonManBob you might be right, mr bob, put excellently

  • greetings from UK , Sounds great lovely haunting vocals ..nice acoustic work , thanks for the upload

  • Wow - I haven't heard this before. I just love sandy denny's voice. What a graet talent she had and this song really demonstrates it. Is she playing the guitar?

  • yes, she is :-) Greetings

  • @ladysonja thanks and greetings to you too!

  • @rhagfirheulog likewise - this is incredible- wherendid this comefrom?????

  • @rhagfirheulog She's a legend. Go to SandyDennyVideos youtube channel.

  • Wow - I haven't heard this before. I just love sandy denny's voice. What a graet talent she had and this song really demonstrates it.

  • Sandy Denny rules

  • Sandy, the purest voice of them all. So hard to believe she was only 19 when she sang this song. I have listened and listened to many versions on Youtube of others covering this song,. none can compare to Sandy's. There are some others who do a nice version with technically good voices but there is no one can sing it like Sandy.

We will miss you for all time...such sadness that you are no longer here.....

  • aye lads a prize she be singing our death song ....we long for the moment on this fair earth............

  • Hi Lady, we share a name, it seems. I'm Sonja too. :o)

  • OMG I've never heared this one!!! Magic!

  • sensitive.... touching.... moving...!

  • How often haunting the highest hilltop I scan the ocean, a sail to see Will it come tonight, love, will it come tomorrow Or ever come, love, to comfort me A fhir an bháta, is na hó-ro eile O fare thee well, love, where'er thou be They call thee fickle, they call thee false one And seek to change me but all in vain Thou art my dream yet through the dark night And every moment I watch the main A fhir an bháta, is na hó-ro eile O fare thee well, love, where'er thou be

A fhir an bháta, is na hó-ro eile

Doth thou remember the promise made me,

A token plaid, a silken gown

That ring of gold with your hair and portrait

That gown and ring I will never own

  • @hypoxide So many people have made me promises. Most of them forgot.

  • i like this :) x

  • wow. beautiful.

  • I come back to it every night, to shed a tear unashamedly.

  • masterpiece !!

  • Sublime comme tout ce que Sandy Denny a chanté . Quelle voix!!!!

  • When Sandy died, I remember the huge sense of loss throughout traditional music circles. Every folk club had people in tears singing this song in tribute.xx

  • not to beleived even today Sandy's singing is a rare treat...

  • Sandy had access to something mystic, majestic and out of this world. It's been since the early 70s that musicians could summon such spiritual undertones like this....then the portal was shut. This simply cannot be reproduced today

  • @ossiezig8 i can try!

  • @lsdvine Best of luck to you :)

  • robert plant had to be good to sing with HER

  • Sandy wiecznie żywa i niezapomniana.... była równie wielka jak Joplin, Morrison, Hendrix, Buckley, Drake - i równie nieodżałowana. Sandy Denny lives forever !

  • she was the finest modern english folk voice

  • I've never heard this version of the song before, its beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • She sounds like Joni, kinda looks like her too...

  • She's very fine. How could have I missed her all these years?

  • Thirty or forty years ago john Peel played a Sandy Denny song called (I think) "Man of Iron". It was beautiful. I have never heard it since, does anyone out there know it??

  • Man Of Iron is the last track on CD1 of the 2CD Anthology "No More Sad Refrains". Hope that helps!

THe Lady was the greatest female folk singer from England if not the greatest female vocalist from England.

  • @Landulphcounter

This is on the 'No More Sad Refrains' album.

  • beautiful, thanks so much for posting this

  • The only other voice on Zeppelin IV :)

  • Wow { Had never come across this before. Amazing

  • Is Joni listening? Or who have they both listened to?

  • a jewel to be shared,,, so i did

  • THANK U Krys

  • fhir a bhata... is that celtic? if so what does it mean? i'd really apreciate some help.

  • Hello! It is Scots Gaelic... it means Oh, My Boatman.

  • thanks. ^^

  • It's a ballad about a woman searching for the man she loves, a man who may have been lost at sea.

  • @redarkling If you want to sung properly search Talitha Mackenzie. it sung in the original Scots Gaelic

  • fhir a bhata means boatman - it was written by Sìne NicFhionnlaigh of Tong who was courting a young fisherman from Uig, Dòmhnall MacRath. The song captures the emotions that she endured during their courtship. The part of the story that is rarely told is that they were married not long after she composed the song... :)

  • in the forest I hear this beautiful voice

  • Beautiful...so,so sincere and True..

  • Mo Gille MOR

    Bright Shining One

  • Got to know just today. breathtaking.

    What happened to her?

  • She died some years later by an accident with stairs

  • The died at the wasteful age of 29 after suffering an injury falling down a staircase. She was sure one of the greatest singers of all times, but she was also a fantastic songwriter. This is one of her early recordings. She may have been around 17 when this was recorded. Even though she was still a teenager, her musicality and power of expression are of incredible depth. Ashley Hutchings said about her: "She was head and shoulders above the rest. And she remains so."

  • @dasGagaTier

I agree thet she was fantastic! But she was 31 when she died from having felt in the staircase.

  • @dasGagaTier that is so tragic. i've only recently got into her, and fallen in quite a big way. rest in tragic peace

  • @dasGagaTier she died at 31 after the doctor gave her a painkiller following a fall...the painkiller was known to be dangerous when mixed with alcohol...such a terrible sad waste. I would love to have heard her beautiful voice age with her.

  • Strains of early Buffy St. Marie and Joan Baez.

Simple. Beautiful. Pure. Clarity. Folk. Sandy Denny.

Fhir a bhata, no horó eile

Mo shoraidh slàn leat 's gach àit' an tèid thu.

    Boatman, o ho ro eile

    Boatman, o ho ro eile

    Boatman, o ho ro eile

Fare thee well, wherever thou goest.

  • BBC Folk Song Cellar, 02/12/66

    Sandy still only 19 then

    very pure, very magical

The song appears in "The Scottish Gael" by James Logan, first published 1876. But was composed in late 18th Century by Jane Finlayson of Tong, Lewis for a young Uig fisherman, Donald MacRae. They were married sometime after she wrote the song.

  • Pure & magical - yes, that's exactly what this magnificent music is.
