Jake E. Lee is one of the baddest motherfuckers ever, to be sure. No one else, that I am aware of, uses the thumb so much, especially in his soloing. Very unique. It is a shame that he kind of fell off the face of the earth after Ray died. I mean, "a fine pink mist" was good, but now he is content to play local Vegas gigs with his 3 piece band, chick drummer/singer and all>
GOD DAMN IT! I wish Ray Gillen (RIP BRO!) was still with us! One of THE all time sweetest voices in rock'n roll... and what a combo there with Jake E. Lee on guitar... I can't imagine a better built rock band! They are VERY under appreciated, even now.
@daemonarc Wow, Badlands = really bad hair metal. Tony Martin was a great choice to replace Ray on Sabbath's "Eternal Idol" -- Ray's voice is just not distinctive and this...this might as well be Winger. lol.
This song does kicks ass, Ray just has to stand there & sing- he was sexy/cool especially in this video. Jake E. Lee does look hot standing against the wall to whoever said that. Badlands were better than most other hair bands.
man i keep listening to this song, and i had the thought that if 80s style rock had taken a cue from badlands it would have been unstoppable. this is the natural evolution from stuff like bad company and led zeppelin. everything is a bit more technical but still has a lot of soul and feel, and great bluesy guitar. and for the guy ranting about van halen, he may be an original, but which song holds up better-this or 'jump'? or maybe 'love walks in' 'jamies cryin' or 'why cant this be love'? hmm
I was floored when I found out Jeff Martin was the singer in Racer X. A much better drummer than a singer, but thank god he joined Badlands....Great album (voodoo highway). Jake ,Where are you?

Ya,Jake was in Ozzy, this singer was in Black Sabbath, the drummer was in Kiss,Alice Cooper,Black Sabbath. He was replaced with a drummer who was the also singer in Racer X with guitar god Paul Gilbert,in which their drummer also plays in Judas Preist. This Bassist played in Yngwie Malmsteens band etc. I dont know why youd think guys with those kind of resumes would be forgetable or lame.
If you liked Led Zep,Bad co.,Free etc. you would appreciate what these guys were doing here around 1989. They sure didnt look/sound like Poison or Motley Crue like everyone else did then. You obviously dont like raw rock n roll. And youre here listening to music you dont like.-and Im the "Douche"
What do you mean, man? You mean Badlands were a crappy band or that Jake E. Lee can´t play music anymore if Ozzy is not beside him???? Too close-minded.
Ok, they were not creating a new sound, but Jake E. Lee told so. He said he wanted that record to sound as if recorded in the ´70s. Agree now, it wasn´t somenthing new, but the musicianship was great.
Does anyone know where Ray is buried? I'd like to visit and pay my respects. I finally got the first album on cd after turning a cassette into dust years ago. Saw 'em at the Ritz in Roseville, Mich years ago. Still love the music, though.
I just want to add that Jeff Martin is/was also the singer for RacerX another awesome band of the time and before!! I was/am a big fan of RacerX and when I found out it was Jeff on drums for this album I lost my mind... it's still gone. Those were the days of hidden knowledge before the internet. RIP Ray and I hope this album lives forever!
One of my most favorite song(s)from the legendary BADLANDS "The Last Time" is a true heartfelt Classic song: performed with a nice twist of the Old West and Ray's voice is Soulfully rich/breathtaking, Jake's trailblazer guitar solo is masterfully high wired/kicking it into high gear to the max and the mighty rhythm section from Greg's bass and Jeff drums is bringing it all home in a gritty-raw Badlands circle. Awesome song/I love the Old Western scenery look it fits BADLANDS perfectly!
Saw them on tour for their 1st album at Lamour in Brooklyn. They kicked ass. Great band wrong time. Hey thanks morons at MTV for pushing Hip Hop and grunge.
Badlands time frame was the perfect time/I just wish that they had the proper Management & Advertisements that they so needed to back them up because they definately had the music skills & package/talents to carry them musically anyway. Badlands legends Jake E. Lee/Ray Gillen/Greg Chaisson/Jeff Martin & Eric Singer earned their music quests/inputs long ago & deserve to be in the limelight every now and then. Much respects!
Ray did Die from AIDS (he was not gay)I used to do a hard rock video program on cable tv.back in the late 80's early 90's and got to interview Badlands both times they came through Dallas.Ray was actualy sick during the second interview. After his death Jake came through town with his new project and I was there to interview them later I spoke with his new singer and he told me Ray had not only died of AIDS but had continued to have unprotected sex with woman after he was diagnosed HIV positive
Badlands was on the most underrated bands. The first 2 albums are classic and Dusk was recorded in one take. It was later cleaned up by Jeff Martin and Greg Chaisson for release. Ray Gillen was a beast and is sorely missed. George Lynch almost had him for Lynch Mob 3 but Ray told him he was sick. Jake E Lee is badass and his new project is some heavy industrial metal from what I have heard.
i nearly shit myself when Bo Bice did that a capella version of " in a dream" on american idol three years ago. i thought that there might have been a resurgencedue of renewed interest due to that broadcast. even if there was, that album is virtually impossible to find. a true classic album. three day funk baby.
As kick ass as this tune is, it's hard to believe that the rest of the material on this album is as good as, or better. In my opinion, Voodoo Highway was one of the all time best hard rock albums ever released. You have to commend Jake E Lee for keeping it real in the face of the impending grunge and rap movement of the time. Unfortunately for commercial sucess, this was the right album at the wrong time. What is Jake E up to these days anyway? Hope Ray is rockin down the pearly gates!
I first caught em in college 1990ish. I guess metal was fading out at the time. Glad it has made a comeback. I wouldn't call this group a hair/glam band, it's a metal act. long hair is just part of the package.
can you believe its been 15 years? i still can't get enough of them. have you checked out "Dusk" yet? used to be only available in Japan but they finally released it in the US. its credits say it was basically live work, and its incredible. real quality without lots of production (but it doesn't sound "live"). RIP, Brother Ray!
Dusk is a demo. It was recorded live...all done in 1 take each. Jeff said he recalls only 1 song needed to be redone due to a mic problem. There are no overdubs..and Ray had only finished about 1/2 the lyrics...so he Jib Jabbed the other words. After it was submitted, their label dropped them. At the time, they thought it was good.
...What a singer Ray was...

Ratt was called Mickey Ratt at first, but not sure Jake was with them at that time. Jake was also in Rough Cutt for a time.

They were in all each others bands, hell, Bobby Blotzer, Warren DeMartini and Juan Crouier were all members of Dokken as well.

Warren credits George Lynch for teaching him the "jackoff" vibrato technique.

i nearly shit myself when Bo Bice did that a capella version of " in a dream" on american idol three years ago. i thought that there might have been a resurgencedue of renewed interest due to that broadcast. even if there was, that album is virtually impossible to find. a true classic album. three day funk baby.

The sound on this album is wonderful. Full rich bass, great guitar tone, and little or no compression. They don't produce albums like that anymore.

Voodoo Highway!!!! Great opening track.

RIP, Brother Ray!
ourtrumpcard 4 years ago
Dusk is a demo. It was recorded live...all done in 1 take each. Jeff said he recalls only 1 song needed to be redone due to a mic problem. There are no overdubs..and Ray had only finished about 1/2 the lyrics...so he Jib Jabbed the other words. After it was submitted, their label dropped them. At the time, they thought it was good.

How did I never hear about this great band? What the heck happened?
aynrandgirl 4 years ago
Like many other great Hard Rock bands such as Blue Murder and Tyketto, they couldn't go on with the lack of support to Hard/Metal at that time.
