@Runningbeardon "Whistle" is not a bad word and does not minimize the beauty of this magnificent instrument. This flute is a fipple flute which is by definition a whistle. The european recorder and penny whistle flutes make sound in the exact way as this flute. The reason I point this out is to illustrate the simplicity of use compared to end blown or side blown flutes. The fact that this style flute functions exactly like a whistle only underscores the elegant, subtle beauty of it.
@shawty1431 Not necessary. the key of E has the same scale as any other key flute. If you take the principles shown in any Native Flute tutorial and apply it whatever key you have, it will sound the same, but in a different key!
@theholographicmind Is there some sort of advanced technique pertaining to the third hole down? (the one that must always be covered) If not, why make six holes at all?
Can u please please look it up on youtube? Justcopy and paste the song title. I know nothing about reading music or anything like that. I just want to learn this particular song to show my very traditional lakota family in south dakota that women can play. I want to surprise them when going back for a visit. Most of the males in my family know how to play but won't teach me because its not custom for women to play the flute.
@MadameDesmonique I don't read music either. LOL. I am self taught. So, whatever I would do to learn the song would be the same as you. I would simply listen to the song and try to figure it out. I am sure you are just as capable as I am to figure the song out. Wouldn't that be a great way to show your relatives that I woman can learn flute, if you were to figure it out on your own... Plus, I would not feel right trying to teach a traditional Lakota song as I am not a Lakota... good luck
@MadameDesmonique I don't know that song. But all Native American style flutes are tuned in a Pentatonic Minor Scale. I am willing to bet that the song you mention is played on a standard NAF scale. What you would need to do is find a fingering chart for that song. If you want to have it in the same key as the recording, you need to find out what key the song is in....
Hello, I bought a very cheap handmade bamboo flute from e bay and I was wondering if you know what the flute is called. Well, it is side blown and when I bought it, it made a very boring and squeaky sound. One day Just experimenting, i taped/covered one of the holes and it makes a very rich native american flute sound. It was called "sounth american wooden flute" but there is nothing on the internet about it.... thanks
@VSatanist I don't know what those are called. I think I know which type of flure you are talking about. I understand that most of them sold on the internet are mostly just for ornamentation.... But, again hard to tell without seeing it in person.
I have a G minor flute but cant always get the great sound from it, is this not a very good starter flute can you give me some pointers Maybe I am blowing to hard it seems to sound bad
@glovett123 It's hard to know without seeing your flute. Try and blow softer. Native style flutes need very little breath. Also make sure that you are covering the holes right. If some of the holes are not covered correctly, it will sound bad. If that fails, take it to a music shop and see if you can get someone to look at your flute or help you with your technique.
@agskater1914 The deeper flutes are very nice, but they are also more difficult to play. If you are just learning, I recommend a smaller flute like an A, F# or G to begin with before trying the big flutes like deep C, B or deep F. But, if you want to hear what the different keys sound like, I would search on youtube or check out different flute makers' sites on the net. I have some great flutes for sale on my website.
@agskater1914 Because the bass flutes are much larger and require larger hands and also experience. When you buy your first flute, you will know what I mean. The bass flutes are great, but any flute player will recommend that you start with a smaller flute first. Once you learn how to play, you will have a better ability to determine how big a flute you can play.
@theholographicmind Hmmm. Okay cool. I guess I should huh. Much gratitude :). See I didn't want to buy a small flute and progress, but such an instrument demands both practice, and thankfulness, and personally, a sence of spirituality and release. Ile try the sound of some other Native American flutes and see which I like, thanks again for your time! :D
nice and informative video cheers... had a look at your site how much to send backpackers flute to new zealand ?what about other keys ie i have a flute in c and one in f drone
This is a very good, interesting, detailed video. I would definitely try this if I had a native instrument I subscribed and FIVE STARS!!! ,Hockeyrocks38

I'be just ordered on in the Key of E! Is that a particularly nice flute? :/

@mahogonywhisper very hard to say. E is a great key, the quality of each individual flute is different.

Hello @theholographicmind :)
I wanted to ask, what are "Keys" in chooseing a flute
Example : "Key of A" or "Key of G" or "Key of low deep F"
See, I want to buy a flute that plays deep notes. Can you help me understand?
