The drum dial is nice, but DrumTone (dot com) tensions all your drum heads, top and bottom, perfectly even, always. You can set the pitch of any head precisely to the note you want, and you can do it instantly, even while you're playing your drums. Check it out!
Drum Dial is a holy grail tunning device...Takes minutes to tune all your toms...
As for tunning it's a matter of tone...I preffer tunning toms at 70-72...I also tune all my drums the same top and bottom except for the snare...which is close but not exactly the same.
I tune my snare 90 on top and 85 on the bottom...Drum dial tunes using number value measuring timponic preasure from the heads. It's a must have for all drummers that want to tune their drums exact regardless of the sizes!
does the dial it need calibrated during its lifetime. im a plumber by day and needle guages i use at work need to be recalibrated periodicaly. i just wondered if this was the same.
great to see someone using a dd correctly, im fed up with all these guys plonking it in the middle of the head, this totally defeats the object which is to get all the lugs even. When I got my drum dial it was a godsend as I never completely trusted my ears, the dd is a fool proof way to perfectly tune a drum quickly, good demo well done
I think it is important to note, that the DD is only a means to and end. You should tune your drums to the pitch YOU need. The DD is merely a fantastic way to get everything even, once you have the pitch you love.

does this only work for the snare? because all it has looked like when i see drum dial videos is people tunig the snare.. will it work for my bass drum and toms?
@bchamorro you should always cross star tune first... this seats the head properly and prevents it from pulling to one side, damaging the head and screwing up your tuning. Cross star tune it like putting on a tire, then once you've got the pressures set and the head is seated well, you can then just go around and fine tune in small increments. If I'm detuning the head, I always go an extra half turn past the pitch I want (down in pitch) then tune up to the pitch - great tip by Bob Gatzen
Great video, thanks for making it! Very informative, and the grey bar tips were very useful. I actually just got a Drum Dial today, so I'm excited to test this out tomorrow.
Thanks for the video. I get so frustrated with tuning drums by ear and trying to do so during band rehearsal, the drum dial will help me tweak during practice. Thanks for showing how it can be used! I'm getting one tomorrow!
Yes but I have a hard time getting the sound cause when I get one side of the drum to what sounds good to me, I tune the other and it changes the all around sound. And tips?
@LeftyLP80 yeah they do have a manual with this thing, but I lost it... you can get it on the web and print it though. There's recommended tensions in there for different drums.
@LeftyLP80 Yes it does. It says recommended tuning for the entire kit depending by size of drum. But it only includes the typical drums like 14by6 or 14by5 snare drum and not the more weird ones( like mine thats 13by 6).
@JEV5X5 whatever sounds good. I usually listen to the drum and listen to the pitch bend and fullness of the drum. Check out some of our tuning videos.
I have tinnitus in both ears from an incident while on active duty in 2004. I built a new drumset from 2007 to 2008 in preparation for exiting the Army. I am now in my first gigging band since 1998. And I'm finally getting rid of my stock ProTones (Pearl). haha This video has informed me a whole lot and has given me the confidence and reassurance to finally get a Drum Dial after all these years. I just wish I didn't actually need it. Nevertheless, thank you for this video, drummerconnection!
for better results you maybe put your hands off when scaling and scale always with in the same distance..

@ERIXDRUMS agree with you 100% Nothing beats the final tweak on the drumset after the drum is mounted and played.

@haydenxx14 yes, it works for all drums. just dont set them all to the same tension.

@haydenxx14 The snare drum is the most common drum. It works on all drums including the kick.

when putting on a brand new head and tuning with the drum dial can you just go around or do you have to do the cross/star tuning method?
