The Zombies never quite got far enough away from their jazz beginnings to be taken seriously by the younger pop audience - but strayed too far to keep their beatnick older fans loyal. Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent were fiercely talented, but always sounded vaguely like knitted sweaters.

Something very similar went amiss with Fine Young Cannibals, thirty years later.

When I was in college, I bought the "Time of the Zombies" anthology, which was a great addition to my music collection. The one cut on it that really blew me away, though, was this Colin Blunstone rendition of the George Gershwin-DuBose Heyward standard "Summertime" (from 1935's "Porgy and Bess"). When so many rock singers could not carry a tune to save their lives, Colin Blunstone could have been a star in any era of popular music. This is a classic rendition of a classic song!

On the other hand, one of my life's continuing mysteries is why Janis Joplin was and is revered by so many. Her singing - let's call it that - was a pitched battle between slurring and croaking that was so often taken for passion!
