I like Celine, but for this song, Janis is the only one who can put that necessary pain into melodic perspective. Even to this day, Janis performs this song with perfect pitch. Great lady, great song.
A really good rendition and faithful to the original but as many copies go no where near the Janis Ian original because anyone after that is only echoing what Janis felt and that goes for Boys and Girls with ravaged faces. What a brilliant and touching song.
wow! I was listening to Janis Ian version and saw Celine Dion cover and listened to her instead and was blown away Celine Dion always give 100% to every song she covers.
Touched how sincere this performance is. Just re-heard Janis Ian doing this tune, her creation and no kidding.. would be surprised if Janis couldn't appreciate Celine's approach on this song so many years after it was written. Celine is a woman who has grown as a person through her life and it is that maturity that she brings to this very densely felt song.
@themisfitsmessiah and its commenta like yours, "Her singing seems 'off' just like her looks." just gives us wh like Celine more reason to applaude her for singing this song. you dont have to listen to a cover of this song if you automatically know youre gonna hate it! you a very ryde and immature person for saying those things about Celine's singing and looks...
@themisfitsmessiah - You know, I don´t despise it but it's not my favorite. I'd rather listen t that song with the very composer Janis Ian. I don't find it ugly, it´s just a matter of likes and dislikes and tastes. Thank you for sharing your point of view.
@themisfitsmessiah - Goodness gracious! Celine's trademark singing is precisely that style of singing. It's not a defect, it's a style. She is never considered an opera singer to avoid the use of nasal sound. Probably you want to look for other singers if it bothers you. I'm a classical singer but have studied this among other singing schools as my degree is vocal pedagogy. Furthermore, she's French-Canadian and that could also explain some of the sounds she naturally integrates in her singing.
Celine did a heartfelt tribute of this song. It was fantastic. It brought back all the pain and heartache that Janis Ian sang about in the Original Version. At Seventeen, we all can remember those years.
This was from the Grammy 08 pre-show - Janis' song was inducted into the Hall of Fame so Celine was tapped to sing it. I love the original, but Celines cover did do it justice. And I think if you read about Celines early roots in Canada, you'd see how this song fits her so well. Even when she first became popular in America, there were people who made fun of her 'looks' (if you recall the 'snaggle-tooth' jokes people wrote about her back then) She's come a long way, and worked hard to get there.
@1bluepearl She is so beautiful :) And worked so hard for everythig. She has always been there for her husband who survived a brain tumor, God love her :)
It is very possible that Celine has special feelings for this song, as anyone who has gone throw their "ugly ducking" years is likely to have, but this is not the song to sing in a large venue, as a Diva, at a gala event, wearing 1000s of dollars in clothing, make up, hair, and jewelry; indeed the song is about quite the opposite. Tone it down please or risk self parody.
Is this a parody? I really thought it was like on SNL or something, & Janis would come on any moment to sing it with feeling.
This is a total miss emotionallly, she may as well have done it her own way in her own voice, inflections, this is almost likee she's making fun of " a brown eyed garl n hand-me downsh..."
WTF, this is the worst I've ever heard Celine sing a song! She sounds like she has a bad cold or singing throw her nastrols(nose) & out of her ears.... I most diffidently love Janis Ian's version way better!
I have heard that Celine was made fun of in school because of her teeth (they were not as pretty as they are now). Being the youngest of 14 children she also wore hand-me-downs. I can relate with all of that. Kids are cruel and I bet the ones who made fun of her feel real smart now.
I am from Québec, Céline was made fun of as a child... her double canine teeth, long frizzy hair, very emotional, cried all the time, skinny, gangly, her hands and nose seemed out of proportion... You still see her nose is largish, her hands ( although more expressive) and imagine her without make up and a stylist. she KNOWS what that song is all about.. maybe she has remained simple because she stills sees herself as the ugly duckling?
Nice of Celine to pay tribute to such a gifted song writer as Janis Ian, who never really received the acclaim she deserves. Even a vignette of Janis in the background graphics at one point.
I like both versions - the 1st version is great - just the words are so damn true for girls at 17 at least when the song was written and sang by Janis Ian.
Celine sings this song beautifully. But I find it a bit technical. :)
Whereas when I listen to Janis Ian's version.. any version (studio or live).. I feel her pain. Each line she sings drips with emotion coming from her soul.
Celine Dion has a nice voice but, I'm not about to believe that she was ever 17 and felt this way. If you notice she's really doing a Janis Ian impression and it isn't working for me. She may like the song and sing it well but, she's lost and it's sort of shallow for a pretty girl to try and sell this song.
@daveumpref Not to defend Celine - I think she's way too over the top - but I've seen pictures of her before she was made to be a diva. She had aweful teeth, and she was lanky, though she was kind of cute but, I know most guys seeing her in jr high or high school would have mostly ignored her the way she looked when this song would have meant something to her. She takes this from her experiences, I'm sure. It's the most genuine thing I've seen her do, not really being her song and all.
This song is about an ugly and lonely 17 year old. SOO can someone tell me why Celine is singing this looking like a sexy diva. This just a big fat "IRONIC" performance>
@chrisscruzzz Have you seen pics of her from her teen years? Super tall and skinny (popular for models, but not in high school cafeterias) with goofy teeth. Janis Ian didn't sing this song until past that part of her life either. Of course this performance can't touch what Janis did, but I think Celine can relate to the song. And it's nice to see someone who has such a huge following cover it. More people to be touched by it, and maybe to find the original on YouTube.
ok, we all know she has a beautiful voice, but does she really HAVE to re-do all of these classics ... some things are better left untouched. We ALL know how GREAT you are, Celine, come up with your own originals and leave some fame for the less known.
I'm not a big fan but she does have a great voice. Still, you haven't heard this particular song until you've heard Janis Ian sing it. Same goes for "If you ask me to" by Patti LaBelle. It just feels like Ms. Dion tries too hard to find an emotional core that does not come naturally/truthfully to/from her. It's kind of nasty. Just my opinion. I like the Titanic Song!
wow i love this song!! if i had a guitar i wuld sing this song!! i first listened in 1 of simpsons episode and have been searching for it and finally got it!! Amzing song!! beautiful voice!! LOVE IT.........
Celine's voice is beautiful but I still prefer Janis Ian's version. I guess it's less convincing hearing the words from the blonde and beautiful Celine Dion, as opposed to the dark haired and less glamorous Janis. A great song, nevertheless.
Celine Dion‘s voice is very beautiful, but I think Janis Ian's song has more feeling to it.
I guess it is because in Celine's song, there are a quite few places where it seem to be rushed, like she is trying to finish the line in a hurry, which make it lost feelings.
Maybe because Celine Dion is always beautiful, so she cannot relate to the song as well.
What a beautiful performance of a beautiful song! I have never been much of a fan of Celine Dion but after hearing her sing "Seventeen" I want to listen to her again.
Miss Dion paid homage to the natural beauty of this song by refraining from adding anything to it. In other words, Celine Dion did not "vamp" it. She sang this song from her heart. It was also very classy when the image of Janis Ian, the songwriter & original artist, displayed in the background as Miss Dion sang. Bravo!
Having read some of these comments - it amazes me still, the ignorance of those who prefer the Daily-Mail perception rather than the truth. Of all people Celine Dion has a right to sing this song. Anyone in Canada during the 80's will remember the very gauche girl with an amazing voice from Quebec in dire need of a dentist. Yes - Janis is the exponant of the song BUT.... Please cut the venom.

@wownouser Im a Celine Dion fan, I just watched a video of Janis Ian singing it live, and yes, her voice is perfect for this song. I almost want to say that she sings it with a bit more passion.
@wownouser I can understand what you mean. The song At Seventeen is sung nicely by Celine, but when I see Janis, it applies better with her. More sentimental, since she fits her "picture" of the ugly duckling than Celine.
she really conveys this well- not her story though... but she takes it in and almost cries at the end --perhaps what makes her so great -and make no mistake -CELINE IS GREAT!
I like Celine, but for this song, Janis is the only one who can put that necessary pain into melodic perspective. Even to this day, Janis performs this song with perfect pitch. Great lady, great song.

Very nice.
Her diction is quite clear.
Still, she does not hold a candle to Jasmine Bonnine who rendered the song hauntingly into German.
Search for ex-corde-ecclesiae or Jasmine Bonnine.
Compare the two and with Janis Ian.

she really conveys this well- not her story though... but she takes it in and almost cries at the end --perhaps what makes her so great -and make no mistake -CELINE IS GREAT!

@Baadj5 How do you know this isn't her story?? Sorry but you need to know more about her to realize how well this fits her teenage years.
