  • I like Celine, but for this song, Janis is the only one who can put that necessary pain into melodic perspective. Even to this day, Janis performs this song with perfect pitch. Great lady, great song.

  • I started not to listen to Celine version of one of my favorite songs but damn she did a good job not bad Celine.

  • this is a joke. another celine dion failed cover.

  • A really good rendition and faithful to the original but as many copies go no where near the Janis Ian original because anyone after that is only echoing what Janis felt and that goes for Boys and Girls with ravaged faces. What a brilliant and touching song.

  • Very nice.

    Her diction is quite clear.

Still, she does not hold a candle to Jasmine Bonnine who rendered the song hauntingly into German.

Search for ex-corde-ecclesiae or Jasmine Bonnine.

Compare the two and with Janis Ian.

  • this is great .. Celine had her issues as an 'ugly duckling' as a teenager and look at her now .. a beuatiful superstar

  • I love this song, but I'm sorry that Celine Dion is such a ugly ducking. Poor girl

  • wow! I was listening to Janis Ian version and saw Celine Dion cover and listened to her instead and was blown away Celine Dion always give 100% to every song she covers.

  • i really like this song,superior

  • Touched how sincere this performance is. Just re-heard Janis Ian doing this tune, her creation and no kidding.. would be surprised if Janis couldn't appreciate Celine's approach on this song so many years after it was written. Celine is a woman who has grown as a person through her life and it is that maturity that she brings to this very densely felt song.

  • @vsibirsky thank you sooo much for your comment, i really apreciate

  • @vsibirsky r u out of yur nut pal?

  • beautiful song. Janis Ian's song.

  • Céline, of Canada ... she is so charming !

  • I think she looks the best shes ever looked here in this vid......top totty.

  • This is for real. She means it, y'all.

  • @themisfitsmessiah and its commenta like yours, "Her singing seems 'off' just like her looks." just gives us wh like Celine more reason to applaude her for singing this song. you dont have to listen to a cover of this song if you automatically know youre gonna hate it! you a very ryde and immature person for saying those things about Celine's singing and looks...

  • @themisfitsmessiah - You know, I don´t despise it but it's not my favorite. I'd rather listen t that song with the very composer Janis Ian. I don't find it ugly, it´s just a matter of likes and dislikes and tastes. Thank you for sharing your point of view.

  • @alexgomez2

I also think it is more personal with Ian. She seems to be singing about her own teenage angst. With Ian it is coming from her heart.

  • very good

  • Sounds like she is singing through her nose. Does she have a speech impediment? Pitiful.

  • @themisfitsmessiah - Goodness gracious! Celine's trademark singing is precisely that style of singing. It's not a defect, it's a style. She is never considered an opera singer to avoid the use of nasal sound. Probably you want to look for other singers if it bothers you. I'm a classical singer but have studied this among other singing schools as my degree is vocal pedagogy. Furthermore, she's French-Canadian and that could also explain some of the sounds she naturally integrates in her singing.

  • i dont like celine's version of this song

  • Passionless:(

  • Obscene ! her singing this song.... is all that can be said.

  • @serracross .. she's just SO skinny!

  • WOW!! Celine Nailed this song GREAT JOB TO A BEAUTIFUL SONG..Celine has a Beautiful tone in her voice she can sing anything!!

  • Celine did a heartfelt tribute of this song. It was fantastic. It brought back all the pain and heartache that Janis Ian sang about in the Original Version. At Seventeen, we all can remember those years.

  • Some things never change,unfortunately

  • This was from the Grammy 08 pre-show - Janis' song was inducted into the Hall of Fame so Celine was tapped to sing it. I love the original, but Celines cover did do it justice. And I think if you read about Celines early roots in Canada, you'd see how this song fits her so well. Even when she first became popular in America, there were people who made fun of her 'looks' (if you recall the 'snaggle-tooth' jokes people wrote about her back then) She's come a long way, and worked hard to get there.

  • @1bluepearl thanks for the nice and true comment :D

  • @1bluepearl She is so beautiful :) And worked so hard for everythig. She has always been there for her husband who survived a brain tumor, God love her :)

  • anything that celine sing i love what a voice what a lady who came from quebec love

you congrts on the twins elana zohar from montreal que

  • a voice that never fade.....i love her=)

  • It is very possible that Celine has special feelings for this song, as anyone who has gone throw their "ugly ducking" years is likely to have, but this is not the song to sing in a large venue, as a Diva, at a gala event, wearing 1000s of dollars in clothing, make up, hair, and jewelry; indeed the song is about quite the opposite. Tone it down please or risk self parody.

  • I am completely repulsed. She should have never touched this song, the holy grail. And what the hell is that thing she does with her eyebrows? No.

  • Is this a parody? I really thought it was like on SNL or something, & Janis would come on any moment to sing it with feeling.

This is a total miss emotionallly, she may as well have done it her own way in her own voice, inflections, this is almost likee she's making fun of " a brown eyed garl n hand-me downsh..."

  • her hair is best this colour, amazing performance as always . suppose to be studying but gotta have a celine break after each paragraph =D

  • @xAshleemarie hahaha...I love your comment gotta have a celine break after each paragraph....ahahaha

  • I love Dion's diction. So sweet.

  • WTF, this is the worst I've ever heard Celine sing a song! She sounds like she has a bad cold or singing throw her nastrols(nose) & out of her ears.... I most diffidently love Janis Ian's version way better!

  • I have heard that Celine was made fun of in school because of her teeth (they were not as pretty as they are now). Being the youngest of 14 children she also wore hand-me-downs. I can relate with all of that. Kids are cruel and I bet the ones who made fun of her feel real smart now.

  • beautiful vocal

  • Out of her mouth this song sounds highly implausible...

  • pffft i bet she was never an ugly duckling...

  • I am from Québec, Céline was made fun of as a child... her double canine teeth, long frizzy hair, very emotional, cried all the time, skinny, gangly, her hands and nose seemed out of proportion... You still see her nose is largish, her hands ( although more expressive) and imagine her without make up and a stylist. she KNOWS what that song is all about.. maybe she has remained simple because she stills sees herself as the ugly duckling?

  • never sure why some rag on Celine, the lady has a beautiful voice

  • *sigh*

This is my song... I'll go cry now.

  • @xCriisti hang in there.....xo

  • @xCriisti hang in the christi....

  • @xCriisti Haha, you got me exactly. When you really "feel" into the song.... I cry too. ;)

  • kinda ironic that she is singing this song, but who knows she was probably ugly and unpopular when she was young.

  • hey- theres always plenty of lonely guys- ugly too-everyone wants beauty or popular or rich

  • celines too pretty too sign this song

  • Janis Ian sang it the best

  • @161shiva I LOVE Celine.... but this is not her best.... but as for who sang THIS song best.... from what I've heard, I'd have to go with DHT....

  • Nice of Celine to pay tribute to such a gifted song writer as Janis Ian, who never really received the acclaim she deserves. Even a vignette of Janis in the background graphics at one point.

  • If anyone was to cover this song, Celine Dion is that person. This song is not meant to be sung, but breathed. Very few singers have that talent.

  • I agree the original by Janis Ian is so much better!! Watch that. XXD

  • nice voice, but I'm unsure she understands why she's singing...

  • @alijane666 calm down crazy... its just a song

  • @ALXVid101 exactly!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like both versions - the 1st version is great - just the words are so damn true for girls at 17 at least when the song was written and sang by Janis Ian.

  • i wish i never heard that song because i feel sad more then i am

  • @alijane666 she didnt copy it, she covered it DUH

  • Celine sings this song beautifully. But I find it a bit technical. :)

Whereas when I listen to Janis Ian's version.. any version (studio or live).. I feel her pain. Each line she sings drips with emotion coming from her soul.

  • 11 people heard Janis Ian singing! 99 have not!

  • Celine Dion has a nice voice but, I'm not about to believe that she was ever 17 and felt this way. If you notice she's really doing a Janis Ian impression and it isn't working for me. She may like the song and sing it well but, she's lost and it's sort of shallow for a pretty girl to try and sell this song.

  • @daveumpref Have you seen the pictures of Celine pre opp's?

  • @daveumpref Not to defend Celine - I think she's way too over the top - but I've seen pictures of her before she was made to be a diva. She had aweful teeth, and she was lanky, though she was kind of cute but, I know most guys seeing her in jr high or high school would have mostly ignored her the way she looked when this song would have meant something to her. She takes this from her experiences, I'm sure. It's the most genuine thing I've seen her do, not really being her song and all.

  • @daveumpref -- look at photos of her as a kid -- she was this song.

  • This song is about an ugly and lonely 17 year old. SOO can someone tell me why Celine is singing this looking like a sexy diva. This just a big fat "IRONIC" performance>

  • @chrisscruzzz for me, the song is a contemplation of someone who's not so beautiful when she was 17 but is ok now and wiser instead.

besides, ugly ducklings will eventually turn to swans... i guess it's ok for someone who's pretty to sing this song.

  • @chrisscruzzz Have you seen pics of her from her teen years? Super tall and skinny (popular for models, but not in high school cafeterias) with goofy teeth. Janis Ian didn't sing this song until past that part of her life either. Of course this performance can't touch what Janis did, but I think Celine can relate to the song. And it's nice to see someone who has such a huge following cover it. More people to be touched by it, and maybe to find the original on YouTube.

  • great.:)

  • My God she's beautiful.

  • My big mistake in my life at seventeen!!!!!!!

  • she has long blond hair. and doesnt know the meaning of the word "ironic" obviously.

  • ok, we all know she has a beautiful voice, but does she really HAVE to re-do all of these classics ... some things are better left untouched. We ALL know how GREAT you are, Celine, come up with your own originals and leave some fame for the less known.

  • I'm not a big fan but she does have a great voice. Still, you haven't heard this particular song until you've heard Janis Ian sing it. Same goes for "If you ask me to" by Patti LaBelle. It just feels like Ms. Dion tries too hard to find an emotional core that does not come naturally/truthfully to/from her. It's kind of nasty. Just my opinion. I like the Titanic Song!

  • ah' close but no cigar ... nice try

  • wow i love this song!! if i had a guitar i wuld sing this song!! i first listened in 1 of simpsons episode and have been searching for it and finally got it!! Amzing song!! beautiful voice!! LOVE IT.........

  • I'm not a hugh Celine fan, but after hearing this, I'm liking her !!!

  • its the first time i hear that song...nice..

  • @esterdion KKK could also be imprented as "Klux Ku Klan or whatever that super-racist cult?

  • @JohnBigOz Ohhhhhhh my God

    what???????????????

    are you serious???

brazilian people always type 'KKKKKKKKKKKKKK' when laugthing in a conversation on the internet

it's a kind of 'kakakakakakak' same as 'hahahah'

    oh mon Dieu

  • I love the way Celine sings this, how do you know how she felt at seventeen to judge her.

  • Celine's voice is beautiful but I still prefer Janis Ian's version. I guess it's less convincing hearing the words from the blonde and beautiful Celine Dion, as opposed to the dark haired and less glamorous Janis. A great song, nevertheless.

  • Celine Dion‘s voice is very beautiful, but I think Janis Ian's song has more feeling to it.

I guess it is because in Celine's song, there are a quite few places where it seem to be rushed, like she is trying to finish the line in a hurry, which make it lost feelings.

Maybe because Celine Dion is always beautiful, so she cannot relate to the song as well.

  • What a beautiful performance of a beautiful song! I have never been much of a fan of Celine Dion but after hearing her sing "Seventeen" I want to listen to her again.

Miss Dion paid homage to the natural beauty of this song by refraining from adding anything to it. In other words, Celine Dion did not "vamp" it. She sang this song from her heart. It was also very classy when the image of Janis Ian, the songwriter & original artist, displayed in the background as Miss Dion sang. Bravo!

  • @Seyahhsod 'KKK means hahaha' KKKKKKKKKK

  • Agree with wownouser!!!!

  • Having read some of these comments - it amazes me still, the ignorance of those who prefer the Daily-Mail perception rather than the truth. Of all people Celine Dion has a right to sing this song. Anyone in Canada during the 80's will remember the very gauche girl with an amazing voice from Quebec in dire need of a dentist. Yes - Janis is the exponant of the song BUT.... Please cut the venom.

  • This is so dam great just like D.H.T's cover.

  • Simply beautiful

  • I think this song relates to Celine more than we know.

  • To be fair, Celine Dion does sing this song very well. But it feels a little wrong seeing a wannabe Barbie Doll singing Seventeen.

  • i can not stand this woman but after this cover she rocked this song out beautifully perfect im 43 i grew up to 45's and lp's lol wanted to hear this clear she did this song perfect i apologies for 3/4 of nasty things ive said about this singer ha again best cover ive heard in long time other is heart covering led Zeppelin i think they do it better then zep lol im sure hate comments on that statement rofl

  • hahaha it's funny to hear celine dion saying: "At ugly girls LIKE ME".

  • I really hear a remake i like but Cline hit this one.

  • this takes me back to high school....

  • as a child celine dion was very awkward looking she was not a beauty queen

  • @yamy14 you said it urself "as a CHILD" not an adolescent. at this age she was already rich and famous!!

  • Yeah, Celine doesn't have the soul that Ian gave her composition. It's nice, but no one sings and performs this like Janis Ian.

  • @g9rocks64 Yes, exactly :-)

  • i'm a guy and i cover this song...her version is great

  • anyone who went through the so called awkward periods in life, you may forget how you used to look like but never ever the feeling the self doubts....in my teen i once though my life would be prefect if i was invisable

  • Celine is very beautiful woman!!!

  • To all young commentators here :)

This is Janis Ian's song who sings it beautifully. Celine Dion sings it nicely, but I still prefer Janis Ian's voice.

  • @wownouser She does alright.

    But you're right.

I can actually feel the tears.

  • @wownouser Im a Celine Dion fan, I just watched a video of Janis Ian singing it live, and yes, her voice is perfect for this song. I almost want to say that she sings it with a bit more passion.

  • @wownouser agree

  • @wownouser lol i already knew that XD

  • @wownouser agree

  • @wownouser I can understand what you mean. The song At Seventeen is sung nicely by Celine, but when I see Janis, it applies better with her. More sentimental, since she fits her "picture" of the ugly duckling than Celine.

  • I love this, :-))

  • She sings this song with so much emotion that when she says "ugly girls like me" i feel like grabing her and saying YOUR NOT UGLY.. TRUE BEAUTY HERE!

  • My art teacher went to high school with her. Apparently she had terrible teeth and braces. People go through awkward periods.

  • yes, she is super!

  • This is such as nice song. Celine is the best.

  • wow what a song. I love it

  • beautiful!

  • It's a beautiful song! :') Well done Céline! <3

  • I love this song to much, Celine sings it beautifully. This song has so much truth

that it touches me, thank you for sharing.

    Hugs

  • She did really well to remember all those lyrics.

  • hahaha that was exactly what i thought when i first heard it KKK :)

  • @esterdion ku klux klan ??????????????

  • I'm addicted to this song... Celine sang it wonderful ! I love this performance. :)

  • she really conveys this well- not her story though... but she takes it in and almost cries at the end --perhaps what makes her so great -and make no mistake -CELINE IS GREAT!

  • @Baadj5 How do you know this isn't her story?? Sorry but you need to know more about her to realize how well this fits her teenage years.

  • Great song..
