Now @ 4 some minutes into this part we see why Phoebe & hubby + the gal @ the car rental agency were acting so robotic in part 5 - they were being mesmerised by the fumes that the queen ant was putting out - and it was a weekly indoctrination they were forced to undergo. The whole ending is a great argument for using Sweet n Low, Equal, Splenda, et al instead of sugar.

This is loosely based on a Wells' story. Besides, you shouldn't take one scene and interpret an entire movie from it. Likely, It is about how human dominance over the Earth may be threatened by damaging the planet's ecology. This theme starts with the first scene of the movie (toxic dumping) and ends when we see that the ants become dominant because of it. The entire town is an ant colony, with humans as the drones.
