This is a common problem with amoled screen. Anyway who use the phone putting the screen just straight under the sun light? i can assure you that the same happen with my macbook, or a television. Anyway amoled screen perform better with less light.
hmmm.....from my one month of google nexus one handset usage and a decade of mobile phone usage i have come to conclusion that usage is more often than not indoors followed by shaded areas and finally under direct sunlight....all handsets suffer same problem....OLEDs the most :)
amazing technical details xilva, but i still beg to differ...OLEDs may be the best but in real life but this is going to cause problems...my own experience says that shadows seldom help when sun is glaring badly over your head and during split second decisions like driving a car....you really cant gamble staring at sun before looking at the screen for any important details...
OLED display has best image quality right now, but in direct sun exposure it might be hard to see.
If screen could be easily replaced like the battery, it could be brighter but it wouldn't last long.
Some LCD's can be seen (usinf transflective tech), but loose most of the color reproduction.
E-Ink displays with sun light are very good because they depend on external light, but still can't reproduce colors, are slow for animations, and can't be seen in the dark.
Search For "Starfield 3D Live Wallpaper" in Android Market...you should find it....while you are at it also check out "Digital Rain"....it is simulation of the matrix screen with digital rains....really very impressive

I agree xilva, use your shadow. Or stare at the sun until yours eyes adjust. 10 minutes should do.
