All the money spent on the Maginot Line was wasted. In the 30's the French could have used that money to build tanks and artillery pieces. In place of the Maginot Line they could have dug massive tank trenches and thick minefields for a fraction of the cost. Men drilling and learning how to coordinate Armor and Infantry wouldn't have been so demoralized as those sitting in dank, dark underground fortresses like gophers or moles. Claustrophobia and boredom does not make for good soldiers...

The money of Maginot reached hardly 6% of the french defense budget.Very few maginot bunkers surrender to the germans. They weren't ment to resist forever. A max of 3 months logisitcs was forseen. Soldiers selected in Maginot line were volonteers and very often local to the maginot bunkers. The fall of Belgian kind maginot of Eben Emael showed vulnerability but the real reason of french defeat is to be found is the absence of modernity

I prefer not even think of that, as the French Communist Party was so popular at this time that it would have been a real piece of cake for Stalin to make of Paris a dedicated satellite of Moscow. It took 70 years to get rid off the Communist ideals in France (they earn 3 to 4% in elections now, not more). We still have the Socialist Party, but it's slowly taking the same way (too slowly at my taste). These parties have both been a pain for France, as they slowered us a lot since ww2.

That's right, this has been I think the most important role of the USA in ww2, maybe more important than the D-Day itself although it's more visible than any other strategic result : if no American presence in western Europe & no working american atomic bomb in 1945, there are high probabilities that ww2 wouldnt have stopped in Berlin. It would have been a piece of cake for the Soviets to simply replace the germans in Europe with no superpower in front of them.

I agree with your assessment. The French soldiers could certainly fight, as evidenced by their tenacity and skill in World War I. I think the victorious powers in WWI (France, UK, US) became too lax and comfortable with their superiority and didn't take German rearmament seriously. Appeasement never works. I think the Napoleonic era was France's proudest moment in its military history. It's a shame the French leadership in the 1930s and 40s didn't exhibit the same toughness.

The incompetence of the French politics and high command has put the shame on France for centuries, and destroyed a 1,400 years old military glory. Remember also that France in the revolutionary era was Europe's most populated country (apart from Russia), thus could afford heavy casulties just to train the "people's army" which became the Grande Armée. While France in the 1930s was a lame, crippled country which had suffered the highest casualty rate among big powers in WW1.

How stupid it was for the French cabinet to enter in a war against Germany in 1939, at the worst possible moment. They should have done it in 1936, when they considered it to curb the Nazi remilitarization of the left bank of the Rhine (but Britain was still all for "appeasing" Hitler). Or wait until 1941, when the French armoured divisions and new aircraft were planned to be ready. A major strategic mistake.
