When they're on the table they act independently When they're on top of the cans they act as one unit because of the cans making it rock back and forth so the metronomes synchronize because now they act as one unit with the board and the cans If the cans were right side up that wouldn't happen because the cans would be stationary just like the table
That's simple. After about 5 beats of everything at different beats, they will all sync up for about 2-4 beats, then get off track again. Nothing to get super crazy about.
i think it has something with the bottles and how they start moveing that cause the arms to eatither speed up of slow down. but i do think its the motion of the bottles
@butters155 Right. I think it has more to do with the center of gravity. When the metronomes are on the table they all have their own different center of gravities. But when placed on the board, they all SHARE a single center of gravity. Hmm. I am not that dumb.... Or am I?
You can see that the last metronome he touched was clicking the fastest, so when he put it on the cans, the momentum of that one straightened all the others out, thus making them synchronized.
@iGwim Nah, they were pretty spot on the same BPM there.... What fixed them was the board moving. They worked together, not one single metronome that syncronized all of them.
the cans act like two fulcrums for the board, whichever direction has the greater force from the metronomes will inevitably force weaken the force of the weaker directional force. Put simply, when opposite forces are on a freerolling balanced plain, the metronomes cause the plain to move in a pattern based on the greater force which eventually the plains motion synchronizes the metronomes.
Hmm, is the motion of the board making them synchronize intermittently or is it the timing of the starting that did that? I am not quite sure what the video intends to demonstrate. It seems like something fascinating is happening, but someone please tell me what I need to look for closely to make it click :)
The reason why the metronomes sync is that inside it is like a wooden clock once you move it is screwed up, but if you place a bunch of clocks on a single board like this clip the momentum will cause all of the clocks to counter act each other weights thus causing synchronization. Also there is a fable not to shake a metronome, this maybe a reason why.
Short version: Momentum, as well as earth gravitational pull and rotation, moves the metronomes on the loose board to equate the force given off by each push, and pull. I would also like to assume the more metronomes on the board, the longer they stay in unison, as well as the less there are, the less in tune with each other they are. Just from what I'm seeing on this video.
If you synchronize everyone in the computer lab degaussing their CRT monitors at the same time, a portal to hell will open up, and all these crazy monsters will come through.
@rct096 The metronomes are set to a frequency when they are all put on the piece of wood and the wood is free to move, it moves back and forth at the same frequency because the sway of the needle exerts a sideways force on the wood. Then they all start to synchronise because each metronome is exerting a sideways forces at differant times, the frequency of the needle changes slightly because its ticks are not in sync with the wood that is shaking it, eventually they match perfect
