the cans act like two fulcrums for the board, whichever direction has the greater force from the metronomes will inevitably force weaken the force of the weaker directional force. Put simply, when opposite forces are on a freerolling balanced plain, the metronomes cause the plain to move in a pattern based on the greater force which eventually the plains motion synchronizes the metronomes.

The reason why the metronomes sync is that inside it is like a wooden clock once you move it is screwed up, but if you place a bunch of clocks on a single board like this clip the momentum will cause all of the clocks to counter act each other weights thus causing synchronization. Also there is a fable not to shake a metronome, this maybe a reason why.

Short version: Momentum, as well as earth gravitational pull and rotation, moves the metronomes on the loose board to equate the force given off by each push, and pull. I would also like to assume the more metronomes on the board, the longer they stay in unison, as well as the less there are, the less in tune with each other they are. @rct096 The metronomes are set to a frequency when they are all put on the piece of wood and the wood is free to move, it moves back and forth at the same frequency because the sway of the needle exerts a sideways force on the wood. Then they all start to synchronise because each metronome is exerting a sideways forces at differant times, the frequency of the needle changes slightly because its ticks are not in sync with the wood that is shaking it, eventually they match perfect
