@jrands38 - Potassium Bromide has worked wonders for Derry (who is now 7). Her seizures have gone from weekly to monthly, and they are much less severe.
Steve. I realize that you posted this video a few years back, but am hoping to get an update. I have a female Welsh Terrier, Gavi, and she just turned 4 yrs. old. In the last 5 wks. she has had 6 seizures that start out very similarly to your Derry's. Her's progress into grand mal unfortunately. Would love any info you could possibly give. I went to Derry's URL, and made Gavi one, and attempting to join the Welsh Terrier Web Ring. Thank you so much in advance! Bec & Trent
@trentmcelroy - Derry still has seizures, and we did put her on potassium bromide last year to help control them. Her seizures have lessened since then, both in frequency and intensity. Derry is 7 now.
Have you had Gavi seen by a professional? We got a lot of different opinions and advice from different vets. We waited a while before deciding on medication. But it sounds like Gavi's seizures are more severe.
@Brooklynbz1 touching the dog will only make is worse. the best thing to do for a dog (or any animal/person) during a seizure is to leave them alone and make sure there is nothing around them that they can hurt themselves on. so these "rude ass ppl" are actually doing the right thing.
I take care of a welsh terrier who has seizures which have lasted up to 2 minutes. It's best to gently stroke them and try to get them to lay down on their side when they first start to look disoriented. Holding them very gently also helps to contain some of the tremors. Give her a small amount of water from your fingers directly after and she may begin to drink on her own. Phenobarbatol has greatly reduced her seizures. She's turning 10 years this summer. I hope you have similar success.

YES! And the best way to help your dog is go grab your camera and start recording this!
This video confirmed that my Yorkie is having seizures! Based on my concern and description, my vet said he was eating something like the cat's food. We put the cat's food out of reach a year ago thinking the same ourselves. About an hour ago, a friend's dog had a seizure while we were on the phone. It was on a much larger scale, but I immediately started researching and found your video. Now I believe I will research to find a new vet. Thank you for sharing.
I found this disturbing to watch - its mildness and length creep me out for some reason (no offense to anybody, especially Derry!). My dog has grand mal seizures and gets them in clusters. I've been trying to educate myself about different types of seizures and have never seen one like this. If it were me, I'd have bloodwork and vet exam done to rule out things like tumors or parasites or whatever else might contribute. Meds can help a lot and untreated epilepsy can be dangerous for the dog.
your dogs seizures don't appear to be that bad, but i suggest you take it to the vet where i'm positive they will diagnose her with epilepsy, and you can get medicine that will greatly decrease the amount of seizures it has. my dog actually passed away on the 19th from a serious case of epilepsy.
Please, if you haven't already, get Derry tested for heartworms. My mom's German Shepard got a very serious case of heartworms that spread into the brain and she started having seizures.
First off, quit worrying about the floor! You can clean it when the seizure is over! Sit with your dog, hold it, talk to it gently! They can get very confused and scared! Also, don't flush the toilet and make all that noise while it's having the seizure! It can actually scare the dog and keep it in a seizure longer! I find it very interesting that your dog stays standing the whole time. Mine loses it's strength in her hind legs and falls to the floor.
I have an 8 year old Welsh who just started having these exact same seizures this year. Any advice?

it's one way to help confirm/diagnose with your vet, at least to help get some insight, i.e. severity
moonmaan 2 years ago
tumors could be part of the trouble
i agree-a small dog like derry, maybe you should try to just pick up an d put em on the couch and gently massage em and try to soothe

Cushing's disease is another possibility that can secondarily result in seizures (my miniature schnauzer has it).
