My love of the androgynous boys began aged six when I saw Bowie wrap his arm around Mick Ronson in July 1972. Now I admire and lust in equal measures the beautiful Mr Molko. This is just fabulous
PS:: There's such a thing as a tribute concert. This is one example of such. I doubt Bolan would have been half as pissy about it as the people commenting on here.
Lol, stop being such a bunch of elitist twats. This is a good version. It was done with much love. Don't like it? Don't listen to it. And let the people who DO like it listen in peace.
Compare the two if you wish. Bowie and Bolan had been great friends when Bolan was alive. It is more of a tribute to Bolan that he performed this song.
@dirtydiana853 I beg to differ. Marc was never stuck in his music. He had progressed into his glam phase after being on the music scene for many years doing acoustical folk rock, electric rock and then glam. Without a doubt in my mind, had he not left us so soon, we would have seen another side of this multi-faceted man...I think Bowie & Placebo did a fantastic job reminding us all to 'keep a piece of Marc in our heart'...
@dirtydiana853 Rubbish, Bolan created, defined and ended Glam rock. By the time Bowie was thinking about Diamond Dogs, Bolan had already proclaimed the death of what he called "Sham Rock". Have you heard Bolan's albums? If you had you would understand how remarkably different they are. Bolan beat Bowie to the "soul phase" with Tanx and Zinc Alloy which were 2 years ahead of Young Americans.
@McDjB1 You must be joking if you seriously consider Bolan to be a more significant artist than Bowie. I don't remember who, but I think it was Tony Visconti who worked with both, who described Bolan's arsenal as much more limited.
@ivankaramasov "You must be joking if you seriously consider Bolan to be a more significant artist than Bowie"
Who cares. Not only did Bowie owe much to Bolan who was several years ahead of Bowie in introducing the Glam format, but in this case, All that matter is that Bolan OWED this song is so many ways that Placebo and Bowie can do little more than cover it.
I love this! i also like how it doesnt even sound the same as in velvet goldmine and i personally think its better than the original though i totally agree with the other person, comparisons allways piss me off
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ugh terrible mix. David Bowie is great, but in this song with Placebo (a band ive never heard) they are just not getting another fan here. this discrases all of rock and roll.
@thenewfella1994 i assume you think they have nothing to offer. well listen to tracks like slackerbitch, drowning by numbers, scared of girls covers like ballad of melody nelson or smoking too long originally by nick drake. then think about what you wrote again. why do people think they're useless?bacause they used to wear make up and act weird?..so did many musicians.that doesnt mean their music is shit. well actually I'm a fan of bands like d. kennedys and smiths and still think placebo are ace
come on you lot, there are many bands i've heard who have done DIRE covers of songs. one that springs to mind is metallica's version of the pink floyd classic one of these days.
@thenewfella1994 Yes,but I think they have the right to cover a song that they obviously like and have been influenced by. You also have a right to dislike it. I agree with you to a certain extent.......I don't think we will still be talking about Placebo in 30 years time!! Cheers.
think bolan would be laughing his socks off at anyone who tried to copy/cover his tracks some things are just un able to be done better.i like placebo some stuff they done is great bowie the same alot of his own stuff is ace @DOKK212 he should have got in the hall of fame yet lot of his stuff was to soon past the glame rock years shame to would he have been greater if not died so soon and young
I think the kid with the SG needs to learn about a fascinating technique called the "upstroke".
That said, it's not bad - about as good as I could expect from a modern band covering a classic. Too much gain, but that's rock music these days - using a Marshall stack set on "kill" when an AC30's all you need. But hey - Bowie makes everything better, and it's pretty awesome to see him break out a Steinberger of all things.
@envenom1 Cry some more. If you'd bothered to read my comment, I was overall positive about it and my comments were (as always) a matter of opinion and personal preference - concepts with which you should familiarize yourself.
Bowie actually has on some subtle shit-kickerz!!!!!! AHHH!!! eyeliner too!!!!! That'a Boy!!! :)!!! Same age as my husband.. yes, i am a toy for that boy!!
@PsychLion Be it your cup of tea or not, I'm not a fan of heavy metal artists, screaming at the top of their lungs but each to their own, surely you're old enough to recognise that as common knowledge and common courtesy to respect other peoples interests? Also, David Bowie is one of the most talented singer songwriters in the UK and all across the world... just wanted to point that out, he in no way, "sucks", whether you like him or not.
Yes, Bolan was a legend. Sometimes people knock him for his egotistic immaturity, but he died before he reached 30. Don't think I would have coped with the pressure as well as him at his age.
Let's not compare this version to the original, in my opinion they're both amazing, of course Marc Bolan's was THE ORIGINAL VERSION, it was the first one, it was the main idea, and it was simply perfect.. This one you just can't compare it because Bowie's and Brian Molko's personalities on stage are very different from Marc's so let's just enjoy the music, shall we?(:
@nayen96 Bowie should have played this with Mick Ronson, would have been interesting. They sing good, but to be rocknroll there need to be some rythmguitar that cuts through and plays in a non generic way. There´s something with this setup that makes it slick, generic and tame compared to the good stuff of Stones, T-rex etc. Partly due to the sound guy, amps, way they play it (Marc played the riff a bit different). Check out T.Rex - Jeepster [Live In London 1972].
@nayen96 And Marc Bolan & T.Rex - "Jeepster" [Live USA '73], +TWENTIETHCENTURYBABY, + v=RCwti0SmruE for the direct opposite. They know how to kill rockn roll nowdays, and fake extasy. You hear the drums and vocals, but the rest is like a carpet of non dangerous sounds that at best will feel cozy. Focus is on what they suspect will please the unknowing crowd, not on the music. It´s subtle, but something like that. But hey if it makes you feel good...
I love this song but the new cover of it by Adam Lambert is my new favorite version. His vocals are unbelievable and has no back ground singers either, Check it out on UTube. He's doing it on his tour as an encore song.
MARC BOLAN HE WROTE THIS LYRIC SONG HE SING IT- BOWIE SING IT NOW ADAM LAMBERT SING IT; AH LIKE ADAM LAMBERT VOICE(HE HAS FIVE OCTAVE VOCAL RANGE). PLUS ADMA LAMBERT DANCE LIKE ELVIS PRESLEY. SO GORGEOUS AND SEXY MOVE.
Instead of judging it against the original, listen to it as it stands. The point of a cover is not to compete but to honor and pay homage to great works that have come before. I loved it and part of the reason is that it didn't try to be exactly what it was for Bolan.
actually, Bowie studied Bolan. Bolan had more to do with changing the scene than Bowie did. Watch Marc Bolan and Trex Metal Guru. 3 disc DVD set. You can see it on netflix.
what a poor cover, that lead singer for placebo, is nothing compared to Bolan vocally. Also, although Bowie was outstanding in his own way but he doesnt quite match up to Bolan in raw talent does he
@gmvincent7 dude no offense but from 1970 to 1978 or so nothing will ever match to what bowie did for pop and rock music. He changed the entire musical landscape and you could not find a relevant artist in the late 70's and 80's that doesn't owe his career to Bowie. Yes, Bolan did influence Bowie but if you compare body of work ( check the lps) you will see how silly your comment is
@cbmdg8551976 I do agree with you...some people should not write comments if they don't know the history of music...David Bowie is the music. He influenced at least '70 '80 and I should add. part of the '90's musical landscape.
actually, Bowie studied Bolan. Bolan had more to do with changing the scene than Bowie did. Watch Marc Bolan and Trex Metal Guru. 3 disc DVD set. You can see it on netflix.
@gmvincent7 ....I don't find your comment silly at all fella...Bolan's style indeed was an influence on Bowie for sure and let's not forget he died just before his 30th birthday.
I would suggest the comment regarding bowie...'He changed the entire musical landscape and you could not find a relevant artist in the late 70's and 80's that doesn't owe his career to Bowie. '...by cbmdg8551976 is the rather dumb and uneducated comment!
Vamos..! T.REX to the Hall of Fame!
well i guess it's the fact that david isn't used to singing very loud you can hear he is having problems with getting over the band in terms of noise i guess brian is more used of doing so and you should keep in mind that david had a hart attack a few years ago
@ivankaramasov ah i didn't knew that i'm sorry i knew that he had an hart attack in 2004 but i didn't know when this was shown but he still struggles with getting over the noise
@svenpenie Listen to Bowie singing 'Gene Genie', 'Cracked Actor', 'I'm Afraid of Americans' or 'Hello Spaceboy' live sometime, and then see if you still think he's not used to belting things out loud. :D
@NerdyCanadian Brian is an excellent singer. So is Bowie. I don't think you can say one is better than the other, they are just different. Brian has a younger voice and it's in a higher register, so it sounds stronger. However, he does go off key quite a bit here. There's a vid of Brian singing 'Five Years' on youtube somewhere, and he makes a fantastic job of it - just him and his acoustic guitar.:D
@MIGHTYBOOSCH198 I agree with you - I'd rather listen to Bowie's version of Five Years anytime. However, my original comment was in response to someone who said that Brian was a better singer, and I was trying to say that I like his voice and I think he has talent - and point out an example. Brian sings Five Years live, and does a great job, however Bowie is a far better musician. He's an innovator. Without his influence, Brian Molko might still be wondering which path his career should take.
WHo the F* is this little sh*???? And why is Bowie going along with this?

Bolan started Glam, but it's Bowie that mastered the movement, gave it meaning, content, concepts.
Bowie was the intellectual one that greatly defined Glam Rock. And that was him who put an end on it, with the Diamond Dogs album.
He moved on, created many more incredible albums and personas, whereas Bolan stayed stucked in his style until his death. Sad.

They ruined the grit of this song by playing it in a higher key.
Just doesn't have the same "umph" of the original.

what a poor cover, that lead singer for placebo, is nothing compared to Bolan vocally. Also, although Bowie was outstanding in his own way but he doesnt quite match up to Bolan in raw talent does he
gmvincent7 1 year ago

I kind of want to erase this cover from history. Nothing can even touch the original.

Vamos..! T.REX to the Hall of Fame!

Whoa...is it just me, or is Brian a better singer than Bowie? :O
NerdyCanadian 1 year ago
well i guess it's the fact that david isn't used to singing very loud you can hear he is having problems with getting over the band in terms of noise i guess brian is more used of doing so and you should keep in mind that david had a hart attack a few years ago
svenpenie 1 year ago
@svenpenie What are you talking about? His heart attack was in 2004, this is from 1999.
ivankaramasov 1 year ago
@ivankaramasov ah i didn't knew that i'm sorry i knew that he had an hart attack in 2004 but i didn't know when this was shown but he still struggles with getting over the noise
svenpenie 1 year ago

OperaRaven 1 year ago 3
@OperaRaven I liked that Five Years cover but vocally I don't think he could match up to Bowie, it wasn't bad but Bowie was far better
MIGHTYBOOSCH198 1 year ago
@MIGHTYBOOSCH198 I agree with you - I'd rather listen to Bowie's version of Five Years anytime. However, my original comment was in response to someone who said that Brian was a better singer, and I was trying to say that I like his voice and I think he has talent - and point out an example. Brian sings Five Years live, and does a great job, however Bowie is a far better musician. He's an innovator. Without his influence, Brian Molko might still be wondering which path his career should take.
OperaRaven 1 year ago
@OperaRaven & MIGHTYBOOSCH198 and anyway you cant compare Brian Molko with David Bowie thats why they are a great combination

leave it to Bowie to take a song that I like and make it sound like an inferior version because he sings it better
