“Hey! Johnny Cope” is a Jacobite song and refers to General Sir John Cope. At the time of the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion General Cope commanded the Government Forces in Scotland.
Andy was watched the world over, I remember watching his shows on early New Zealand TV, and as a kid I thought Scotland was just like his TV show. that was the early 60's in NZ.
Mr. Stewart died the year I was born. He's great - so natural! I love "Johnnie Cope." I'm not Scottish but the Irish -me!- and the Scots were allies!
@Pawnbroker00 I apologise for not being more explicit. If 'Bonnie Prince Charlie" had suceeded Catholic Ireland would have allied Herself with him. Thanks for explaining!
@JCMcGee Did he not send his brother Edward Bruce to assist the Irish Gaels to fight against the Hiberno Normans? Then somehow or other Edward Bruce (not Edward King of England) was crowned High King of Ireland, but the Irish Gaels were never united behind him, some of them even fighting for the Hiberno Normans. Well actually Irish Gaels probably had more in common with a Hiberno Norman than a Scotto Norman. Anyway the Hiberno Normans & the Anglo Normans managed to defeat & kill Edward Bruce
@JCMcGee despite help from his older brother Robert, King of Scots & that was the end of that. So the King of Scots did try to ally himself with the Irish Gaels against the Hiberno Normans, but apart from anything else, maybe the fact that he & his brother were part-Norman themselves could account for the mixed reaction they received from the Irish Gaels. Of course the Gaels in Ireland & Scotland continued to have family & military ties after this, just as they'd always done, but I don't think
This is the best version of the song. I think I've watched this video over 50 times in the past week. We need more videos of Andy on youtube, I love watching him sing.
@Pawnbroker00 OMG, you didn't really just dishonor yourself and your country with this kind of racism! You owe your family and nation and everyone on YouTube an apology.
@endora60 How is it racism? Why apologise? There was no niggers back then, only the occasional englishman. Nowadays, even here in the countryside there are many english immigrants.
Hey dearie-just because you embrace Labours open door "Scotlands no place for racism", crap doesn't mean we all have to swallow it.I preferred my country the way it was when I was young. We don't need the economic immigration we have here now despite being lied to- I wasn't asked if I wanted it-but got it all the same.
Gordon Brown and his Ilk I hope will rot for what he's done.
@Pawnbroker00 You don't have to love recent immigration policy, but in talking about black people in such a disparaging way you make all Scottish people look bad. I've travelled the world as seen a great deal of poverty, and if I were in the shoes of those seeking immigration here I would do the same and so would you. Please just enjoy the music.
what mother country? Your ancestors must not have valued it all that much to leave it in it's hours of weakness,, english murdering and repeatedly trying to destroy scotland and it's spirit, culture and language, now i must say even the modern english aint doing all that well
Yeah, the White Heather Club was best avoided by teenagers in the 60s like the plague but Andy, like a lot of artistes of the time, seem to have a touch of style now. Just nobody dare start singing 'Donald, where's your...' - a bl00dy disgrace to Scotland!
This was Scotland's counter attack on the rock 'n' roll revolution. My Granny used to like Andy Stewart (well the Grannys of most Scots of a certain age liked him). He was described as one of a host of kilted entertainers but he stood out because he was genuinely entertaining. I've told a few people that it was his son, Ewan Stewart, who played First Office Murdoch in Titanic and they're incredulous, discounting the very noticeable father-son likeness.
what year was this from?

@OurLadyofGalway Scotland and ireland were never allies.. ireland was never united, it spent most of the past millenium under the yoke, retard
Irish and scottish were traditionally friendly, since both had celtic cultures of the same origin

This is better than most of Stewart's stuff, but I'd still rather hear the Corries' version. This is a little too "Hollywood."

Andy Stewart was definitely a kilted entertainer with the emphasis on the entertainer. He also had quite a gift for ad-libbing.
