8:33 "when you have to shoot, shoot don't talk" ,movie was done over 40 years ago however holds more common sense than most of today's crap being churned out
I actually saw a movie this weekend where the guy who provided the false jumps was actually doing it on purpose because he thought it was funny. :)
Actually, like anything it's all in the hands of the user. Sure a lot of these things are over done but would you really want the bad guy to just shoot the hero and end the movie? Okay maybe in a really bad movie but usually not you wouldn't.
What I hate the most is how the murderer can kill every supporting character within seconds but when he goes to kill the protagonist he has to drag it out, giving him a chance to get away or be saved at the last second. Just stab him the way you stabbed the other 8 people! Jesus! Such lazy writing...
You forgot the massive fights, why in hell when the good guy is fighting 50 bad ones they go and try to kick his ass one by one and the others are just staring?
Yeah, there are a bunch of those dumb clichées. Especially in horror films. Who is stupid enough to go to a lake where people have been murdered several times? Who gets out of the house when there's a killer outside and you know it? Who in their right mind runs up the stairs when the killer is following you? Why does the killer often where a mask? But seriously, why do villains always have to start explaining their plan? That's pointless. Wes Craven made a great movie that shows clichées: Scream
3. the music stopping for a funny part isnt bad at all. sometimes it can be VERY funny. but it IS stupid and cliche when you hear that record skip noise. ugh....
One that annoys me is when someone has a gun pointed at them and they tell the person pointing it at them to shoot. They always say something like "So you're gonna shoot me? Well go ahead and pull the trigger!" And then the person with the gun just totally gives up wanting to kill them.
@superstevenumber1 A great filmmaker will know when to turn a cliche like this on its head. In Michael Mann's Collateral, Jaime Foxx points a gun at Tom Cruise and Cruise is like "You're not going to shoot me." Right then Foxx goes for a headshot! When I saw that I thought, "Damn, that was hardcore." Honestly, it should have been expected.
@thrashandburn1022 How does that immerse people in the enviroment when the camera is focused entirely on the characters. I'd almost say the opposite is true, makes me completely ignore the scenery.
Quinten Tarantino was the first to impliment a 360 shot in a movie, in reservoir dogs. Thats why its relitivly recent (last 20 years) and it appears in virtually all the QT fils, as demostrated here. At least that is what I have gathered, I've never witnessed an earlier use of 360.
And I have no problem with the 360 shot, sure it may just seem kinda and art house on purpose, but I like it since I'm impressed that they can do a 360 without showing the film crew. Makes you feel like the place is real.
I've got another cliche, you see it happen in mystery shows, or murder shows. The mystery is usually almost solved, or almost abandoned, and the character is somewhere completely distant and unrelated, and they see something random, which brings a sudden epiphany on how to solve the murder. I saw this on Castle the other night, he is tying a bow on his mom, and he's like "THE BOW, IT WAS TIED WRONG" bingo, mystery solved. It happens in Charade from Alfred Hitchcock, in the stamp market too.
I'd also like to add the overuse of the Howie and Wilhelm screams in movies. Really annoying and take you out of a film. I can't even count the number of times I've heard them in movies!
You are free to call them cliches, but you're just a f*$&ing critic. You have produced, directed and acted, and you are no more fit than I to critique popular movies from today and yesterday. Yet I still say to you, James: "You're the man now, dog."
Indiana Jones moonlights as a treasure hunter. He's probably exhausted a lot of the time (not to mention, bruised and battered from the numerous scrapes he gets into). At least I think he gets a pass for being absent-minded or disorganized. :-)
@MerlinAmbrosius17 And as a teacher, I can attest to the fact that this happens almost every day in at least one or two classes. It's almost always because the students interrupt too much.
What about a shot of a person or group of people walking away in slow motion from an explosion? Anyone else notice that. Or a movie with a plot about a disavowed secret agent trying prove his/her innocence and or unmask a traitor?
I can say that I've been exasperated, at one time or another, by every item on this list except for the 360-degree camera rotation. If used appropriately, I find that it's one of the most effective techniques for immersing me in a significant moment. Certainly more effective (and less invasive) than those extreme closeups of a character's eyes.
Also there's the left-handed knight or soldier in epic medieval movies or any average peplum... it's more a goof cause on those ages, nobody was left-handed (everyone must to be right-handed, the left was considered to be sinistra : sinister) but since nobody pointed that mistake, this became a commun cliché in recent peplums and medieval flics
The false alarm thing always got 2 me. You don't just come up and put your hand on somebody's shoulder or anything like that. You damn sure don't just pop out or anything unless you intend to scare them. Most people I know would knock somebody out for doing things like that...LOL
10. When u are really really scared with something ur legs are like Jelly, thats why u trip and fall, its true and it happened to me. 6. At all the schools ive ever attended the teacher dismisses u not the bell.
You forgot the "False alarm- than they die" thing in scary movies. It's like the moment someone pulls a scary prank on someone or it's just a cat (something like that) than he killer comes up, as if they are catching us off guard by reusing the same tecnique over and over.
And I have no problem with the 360 shot, sure it may just seem kinda and art house on purpose, but I like it since I'm impressed that they can do a 360 without showing the film crew. Makes you feel like the place is real.
I love the false alarm in video games...it works really well in the jump out at you horror games...the monologuing villains is a staple in almost every video game...
The false alarm is called a "luton bus" in horror films. I thought it was a fun fact...wanna know why? ok i'll tell you...it was first used in Cat People and the false alarm was a bus.....in Luton. I bet you feel better now.
If you thought the villains here were stupid, wait until you see Troma movies. Believe me, the Chairman from the Toxic Avenger movies could overact a fart.
the only time i like the 360 shot is if their showing you multiple things happening at once, like if two people are fighting and its showing their teammates fighting in the background as well
what about the time when couples eat lobsters or crabs.. boy oh boy you let that wooden hammer go and it's guarantined that piece of the lobster goes to the near by tables glass or table..
the 360 shot puts emphasis on the characters in the center. it can also be used for a lot of this. when a person feels brand new, when a character is checking out his surroundings, usually in a fight.
The impending worldwide catastrophe that can only be solved by a group of American military, scientists and or politicians (I'm thinking of Armageddon or The Core)..
I agree about the car not starting bit. But I think in Back to the Future it made more sense, because Marty wasn't driving away from something/someone, he had to drive towards it (the light poles containing the wire that would channel the electricity from a lightning bolt).
Another cliche I really hate is "People who can't swim". Seriosuly, doesn't swimming-class excist in the movie-world? And they actually make fun of it in Captain America, when the kid falls into the water, and when Capt. is about to save him the kid goes "it's okay I CAN swim!".
interesting how these things are used so much you often subconsciously expect them and barely notice them. We're so Hollywood conditioned! It's always great when you find a film which does things differently and almost makes you feel uncomfortable by refusing to conform to your subconscious expectations...

interesting how these things are used so much you often subconsciously expect them and barely notice them. We're so Hollywood conditioned! It's always great when you find a film which does things differently and almost makes you feel uncomfortable by refusing to conform to your subconscious expectations...
