  • that looks foolish i saw a whale that was blown up and up and up and came down destroying a car and allmost killing a bunch of people. again very foolish

  • 1:08 fast click button to explosion :)

  • dude tbh that looks like a shit load of fun

    what ever works lol

  • Wow, I didn't know black powder was still used for anything like this. I figured professionally they would use "safer" slurry explosives instead of static sensitive propellants. Of course I suppose ANY amount of ANFO large enough to be detonated would have turned half this log into a million deadly toothpicks and sent the other half into town.

  • i got a splinter

  • Yee haw

  • If you just want to see the explosion 1:33

  • People are getting lazy....if a computer was able to crack or hack that tree they would have used it.

  • hard hat area!!!!!

  • lol

  • Did you guys use a det to blow that log, or just powder.I have a big gum to split.

  • thats one big ass trunck

  • NICCCE.

  • bet these guys never get bored at work, btw got a space for an apprentice?!!!

  • I think you used a right bit to much PAPPY....! = )

  • German WW2 grenade, but a little bigger! ;-)

  • Id give a bunch to get in on that

  • INCOMING!!!

  • Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?

  • how many blck powder do they use to blow up that log 10kg??

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome

  • I'm always amused at the nervous giggles that seem to accompany the use of explosives, no matter how legitimate. (A friend of mine worked at the Nevada Test Site and confirmed that even seasoned engineers snickered a bit when they set off nukes powerful enough to make the ground shake in Vegas.)

Several old-timers here told me this was a common technique for splitting large logs back when hydraulic splitters weren't readily available. Thanks for posting this.

  • Now that was cool...

  • thats one big piece of wood... remonds me of mine XD! omg! wat is he doing! AHHHH! HES CUTTING IT!

  • Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooly sheep shit!!!

  • Coolest job ever ^^ Blowing wood apart with blackpowder.

  • thats a fat C tree

  • That's what I call a great day at the office!

  • black powder works for everything

  • You could use black powder to remove a dent from a car door.

  • I have an old "Powder Wedge" that's like an artillery shell with about a 1" bore and a pointed muzzle end you drive into the log after loading like a cannon. The old timers say they used to blow 17 ft. logs all to hell using an ounce or less of black powder. Never tried it, but when I do I'll try to get a video of it and post it.

I wonder how Pyrodex would work?

  • its pre cut.....that suck

  • "..think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?"

  • BOOM! YAY!

  • this just proves that there is nothing that can't be solved by the use of high explosives

  • But you see black powder is a low explosive yes still powerfull but it just burns realy fast =)

  • @pythongunner black powder is far from a high explosive

  • bloody hell how much did they use lol

still bloody good , makes me wanna go make some :P

  • An explosion always lifts everyones spirits : )

  • would love to do a sculpture out of that log

  • LOL almost like fishing with TNT hehehe hill billie way yeehaaaa

  • and long live crocodile dundee loool :D (or not cuz the guy's dead already :( )

  • great success, jaegkshemaksh

  • get a 'lucas mill' fellas..that log is just starting to be the perfect size!

  • anyone remember blowing stumps out of the ground with dynamite in the old days?

  • Didn't the Dukes of Hazard do that ?? Dynamite tree stumps ?

TNT & Dynamite make me very nervous. Thats likely the reasdn I still sleep with Paddington bear. Even so, its fun to say the word Toluene... say it with me, T-O-L-U-E-N-E yay

  • i did not say "this tree" is renewable, dipshit. i said "trees" are renewable.....

look around you!!!! dont know where you might be,,, unless you live in a protected area of national forest or or in the middle of a state park. you see the renewable resource every day!!!!! there is not alot of old growth around for the average city dewler to see!!! go look around and see the little saplings growing!!! guess the guys i the video should have danced around naked and then planted it again!!!!

  • Super Dumb...rofl

  • tree huggers really dont have a clue!!!

    trees are a RENEWABLE resource.

i dont think they waisted it!!!

  • Thanks for the proof of ignorance. The tree is being recycled into useful products after being felled by weather. There were no saws big enough to cut it. Why don't you be a little less know-it-all and little more willing to learn?

  • @AbnerStinqort ---there IS saws big enough to cut this--on the west coast of Canada this tree isnt big--------loggers fall way bigger ones every day

  • @sasktank And just how do you propose to transport this giant tree all the way to the West coast of Canada? Going to put it in the back of a pickup truck? These things matter.

  • @AbnerStinqort you actuall coud get a truck large enough to carry this and you could fly it there on a plane

  • @CMFKMOB Yeah, they could haul it to the closest massive log splitter... OR they could NOT spend money transporting it, then having someone else do their work for them, using the relatively inexpensive way that they did.

  • @sasktank Maybe there are saws big enough but is it as fun as blowing stuff up with black powder? I think not.

  • I didn't realize how big the log was until the guy entered the frame.

  • did they stand enought the job saw these wood all day ?

  • W{}W very Impressive Bp is the BEST Awsome I love it! rawrr

  • Not only is the title of this great, but it was an impressive explosion.

  • sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOL, thats' not work, that's you guys having a great day at work!

  • COOL! lots of firewood for eveyone

  • to bad sucah big trees are getting rare :s althou i love lumberjackin but i can't agree with that :s

    cool explosion thou :)

  • except black powder is far more stable and makes more gaseous products. flash powder has almost no real use

  • No... my flash powder doesnt even light with a flame on it it needs to have a ember to ignite it and black powder burns with a flame also black powder has KNO3 in it and the smoke from it will make your heart pump slower so .... i think flash powder is better

  • except that static electricity can set off flash, blackpowder would be much harder to set off with electricity, and BP is better for splitting because it has a slwer delfagration, whic means that when it explodes it doesn't shatter as much so there are less splinters and more usable timber. also flash powder can be set off br friction.

  • it all depends on the type If you hit a hammer on kclo3/al flash it will detonate but with kclo4/al it wont

  • yeah but that's not a friction test, a friction test is where you drag a weight across the top of the test. anyways use what you like, but BP rocks lol

  • i suggest flash powder cuz you can whip it up in two minutes but with black powder you have to wait like a day to ball mill it

  • yeah true but you can just CIA it and get decent BP pretty quickly, and it's safe to store. anyways.

  • God bless America!!!

  • hee hee hee hee

  • This Video is awsomew no matter how many times i watch it.

  • Why didnt they blow up that mother of a log in the beginning that the tractor was lifting

  • Thats one way to split a log - beware of log shrapnel.

  • deflagration at its best

  • No No I believe that was detonation. If it was deflagration it would've set fire to the thing. Detonation is where the pressure waves surpass the speed of sound and surmount on top of each other creating the force.

  • Yeah and if it was a detonation it would be MUCH more intense!! There's clearly no shock compression. Its simply a high speed deflagration. Detonation will not magically occur because a deflragrating propellant is contained/put under far more pressure.

  • Sure are some BIG pieces of firewood there, huh?!! Good look getting into your HOUSE! Much LESS the fireplace, LOL!

  • well thats gonna make black wood and it wasent a real fast mix it was conpressed really well but its still not slow look at the smoke it takes along time for it to clear

  • Come on, does anyone really read

    'Popular Woodworking'?

  • Yes...those of us that are not fascinated by pin hole photography, art, fasion and wearing our mommy's clothes read "Popular Woodworking".

  • that was awesome

  • Kids........ Do not try this at home. lol

  • Which inclines me even more to

    TRY THIS AT HOME! :D

  • lol it's the "don't look" theory, it never works :)

  • neighbor thinking...Dang kids and their no good friends!

  • SPLINTER IN MY EYE!!!!

  • Thats alot of toothpicks

  • yayayayaayayayayayayayayaayy thats my style:D i like lazy work the easy way out is always to use explosives

  • How many pounds of bp does it take to make those logs move like that? Are you using standard bp (75% KNO3, 15% carbon, 10% sulfur) or modern ,nitrocellulose based, smokeless powder?

  • Please read my description of the video. I did not do this.

  • @AbnerStinqort question still remains...... HOW MUCH BP WAS USED?????

  • @UndoneB4Broken They used Sodium Nitrate blasting powder which is a poor substitute for real BP: they also used a "blasting gun" which is like a cannon inserted into the wood , loaded with blasting powder and lit via a fuse. Works every time. Blasting powder is C grade gunpowder and about half a cm round and looks silver due to the graphite on the outside. You never use this low grade black powder in firearms as the muck it creates is not worth it. Cannons..perhaps.

  • Is there smoke?

  • @PixelPi

I need to know as well, but for the other splitting vids, it looks like their using reg. BP.

Let me know if you find out. :)

  • @PixelPi

Due to all the smoke, i don't think it was the smokeless powder.

  • @PixelPi hmm there most likely using store bought blackpowder (most likely blasting grade) you can buy it at alot of gun shopes or order it online

  • i sell firewood...and to think all this time i been splitting by hand!!!! LMAO! great video

  • coooooool

  • Can black powder be harmful if u breath it in when your handling it or do u have to wear a mask

  • Its a combination of charcoal, sulfur and saltpeter (potassium nitrate), none of which is toxic. The sulfur is the worst of the mixture, but a little dust from the powder won't hurt you.

  • Yes, charcoal is a carcinogenic which means it will give you cancer. Potassium Nitrate can stop your heart and sulfur is a poison. Everything in the right doseage is poisonous even wood like Rose wood is toxic.

  • everything gives you cancer.

The best thing to do if you are a pyro is to drink a lot of green tea...

  • yeah every day on the news they find something else that gives you cancer...

THIS JUST IN!!!! EATING BROCCOLI GIVES YOU CANCER!

  • lol and working :P scratch that this just in life gives you cancer

  • a lazy man's job :P

  • that was fat

  • Should try that on a telephone pole.

  • thats one way to get fire wood

  • amen brother

  • By The way, wanna see half filled and full filled pipe explosions?, you should watch "Real Homemade Cannon 2, and more" (in that video the explosion is of a half filled compressor, and the shots with the musket and the cannon were made with fullfilled pipe bombs)... and it´s always cool, but of course if you dont wanna waste powder, the "half" method should be used!

  • They Didn´t use a drill... how they did to put the B.Powder tihgt enough to blow it?... i mean i did something similar...but i had to use a drill, and then close the hole hermetically(after putting the BP inside) to take advantage of all the explosion power.

  • Why do you think they didn't use a drill?

  • Right... hehe i just tought they would have showed it in the video, but they showed a man cutting the lumber with a power saw... not making a hole witha drill... i don´t know if they used one indeed, but i would like to learn other ways of putting the Bp charqe inside the lumber.

  • My thought was that the guy with the chainsaw was scoring it so it would break into chunks. I'm sure they planted the carge in there somehow, but better not to share it with the world. Wouldn't want to encourage wandering tree-trunk-exploding gangs! I like the laugh, btw; "hyuk hyuk hyuk!"

  • hahha nice laugh indeed!!...

yeah you´re right about that of "not sharing it", by the way have you seen my Lumber splitting video ??..there´s where i used a drill (should watch it)

  • Nice explosion you had there. I was watching to see if a piece would hit the window in the background, though! Very well done video. I must soon post my videos of exploding pumpkins!

  • hahha.. yeah it was nice, but any piece hit the window... i´ll be waitng that videos, i´m also planning to upload some more videos... see you (or you videos)!

  • hahahah i love these guys.

  • also you could just make your own black powder

  • rich? naaah...only took about 1/2 pound of well-placed black powder to split it the first time. maybe $30 buck

  • do you have any idea how many POUNDS of blackpowder that would take? these guys must be rich

  • ya no kidding!

    Later, Josh

  • Rich??..hahahaha... it´s easy to split a lumber with some BP (I have a kind of small homemade version of lumber splitting, watch my vid and you´ll see you don´t need too much B.powder, the problem is that everyone underestimates it´s power...)

  • alright...your's is a pipe bomb. this is pouring loose powder into a hole. plus this log is about 8 1/2 feet in diameter.

  • If the powder is tight enough in te hole... it should be the same... the lumber itself would be the "pipe"... But anyway as selby said : "rich? naaah...only took about 1/2 pound of well-placed black powder to split it the first time. maybe $30 buck "... and in my case, i think it was much more cheaper... with my pipe bomb i´m sure i didn´t spent more than $2...

  • i've tried it with a much smaller tree. simply blew out the plug. i've only had luck with high explosives.

  • You know its a waste of powder to "pack" it. The explosion is caused by the rapid expansion of gases as the powder burns. The explosion is caused by the pressure buildup inside the pipe. A pipe one-third full of powder and tightly sealed will create a stronger explosion than one packed full of powder. I've tested this.

  • I have tought the same a lot of times, and yes you are right, i don´t know if the explosion will be that stronger, but surely you won´t waste powder (that can be seen in the amount of fire and sparks the explosion does, because all that fire and sparks are produced when the "wasted" black powder burns in the air after the pipe explodes).

  • Yes it is a Waste of powder as you said, but i don´t know if the explosion would be so much stronger... because the pressure that bulids up inside the pipe does not change, it´s always the same, so if you have more or less powder inside the only thing that will noticeabely change is the amount of fire that will be produced after the pipe explosion, because that fire is produced by the "wasted" powder, that couldn´t burn inside the pipe.

  • The other thing I've done is throw small camp stove propane cylinders into bonfires, and the cylinders we thought were empty made HUGE explosions, where the ones that were full just spit open and blew fire everywhere. Both were cool, but the extra space allows for the gases to expand more rapidly and "detonate" the container rather than simply burst it. But you r explosions worked just fine, so I'm not complaining!

  • yes you´re perfectly right about that of the propane, and it happens the same if you wanna blow a car.. it explodes better if te tank is half empty...

With the powder is not so easy i think, because the powder does not makes gases before burning, while the gasoline and the propane do (and their gases are more flamable than the gasoline or the liquid propane itself).

  • lol, i wouldnt want shards flying in my face, llol nice vid

  • I think it's a very effecient way of splitting wood!

  • When you're young, you play around, when you get older, you watch young boys play.....

  • Have you ever blew a stump? We had a Oak stump about 4 foot across, drilled & charged the hole with 25 sticks and 5 gallons of Nitro. Repacked with wet mud and used Dozer to pack tight, then touched off. Bye Bye Oak stump. Could have dug it out with the backhoe, but sticks and nitro sure saves on the diesel. A real time saver

  • i wish people would READ THE DESCRIPTION before flaming everyone

  • WHAT A WASTE OF LUMBER

  • Did you miss the entire point of blowing it apart - so that the pieces could be made into lumber? It was too big to saw up, as one piece.

    Sheesh.

  • lol!! nice vid

  • that's pretty cool.

    check out my videoos

  • wow impressively controlled

  • Get errrrrr done!

  • hillbillies!

  • Classic!

  • nice vid,,,, how much of a load did you put into it? Did you drill holes or slot it with a chainsaw?

    cheers!

  • I didn't do this. I got the video from the website for Popular Woodworking magazine. You can find info about the article by searching popularwoodworkingdotcom for article id 14449.

  • JA..COOL...i have similar small homemade version of this video...and other explosive stuff, watch em...you won´t regret...

  • tree fell in forest and nobody heard so why not blow it up...lol

  • I bet that tree was beautiful when it was alive...

  • Yeah, but who saw it?

  • doesn't have to be seen to be beautiful of course. but fair point!

  • nobody lives forever.i love that blast. norway

  • No, it wasn't. I used to hang out at this tree all the time. It wasn't that great.

  • agreed. a detonation would have rendered the whole thing useless. BP does a clean job when it deflagrates.

  • HOW MUCH black powder and how is it ignited?

  • yeah dat was aiight. i enjoy a bit of flame tho ya know?

  • Nice. I almost got killed doing this once. Cut a hole in a big log (3' x 3')with a chain saw. Poured in some black powder and used a long length of canon fuse. Thing was I only had a little canon fuse coming out of the hole. I did not realize as soon as the fuse got over the edge of the hole sparks would set off the BP. Big hunk nearly missed my head.

  • I would say: Treebeard myth busted

  • I think the point of using a low-explosive like black powder was to split the log while keeping as much as possible intact for building stuff out of... A more powerful explosive would have turned valuble wood into worthless splinters.

  • use somthing more powerful

  • That 1st explosion looked like when I threw a pipe bomb in an old speedboat(Have it on camera)

  • Real men play with HEs.

  • I now know what grown ups do at work all day lol nice video guys

  • That's freakin' sweet man!
