haha its funny how people come on here and leave comments like "oh its actually a simple trick" or "very easy trick and easy way to manipulate the mind" as if they do this trick on ppl all the time or something lol
The dead folks pictures' looked less happy compared to the alive people. Less happy pictures are purposely chosen for the people who are dead and happier pictures are chosen of the people who are still living. Given the atmosphere of the experiment, the person is most likely to put happier looking pictures of people in a seperate pile
@hurley3000gt : yep totally agree with you ..i thought of the same thing... after all this is mind control :) but still it just baffles me to realize how much potential there is to control peoples minds.. not to sound evil or anything :P
@hurley3000gt exactly buddy, all the pictures of the alive people were very cheerful and it was a blooming atmosphere, smiles, light colours in the backround. The dead people were gloomy looking, and most of them even had one blank colour in the backround such as all white with that older man in the end. Very easy trick and an easy way to manipulate the mind
"lovely lovely lovely lovely happy place" = photos were placed on the right hand side when he says this (begining).
"states of death, see through the facade that we errect" = tapping on table towards the left hand side. 'Dead' photos also have glasses (facade) in the background ;) ;)
@WonWildWeely Actually I have a little experience with this one. There's no NLP, no hypnotic induction, etc. It's actually a very famous card trick that's been adapted for use with photographs. Very clever....and very convincing!
@myk3wuzhea The test is to see if you will do it. If the picture doesn't tell anything about the soul of the person you love, then what are you afraid of? Stab their face in a picture.
he explains this on his DVD 'The devil's Picture Book' Except on the DVD he makes them separate the reds and the black. This trick is all sleight of hand, nothing to do with our mind... or dead people
Derren brown is that best at what he does, of course you know is a trick cause you are looking at it via vid, so hostile! i bet if he was in front of any of us we would probably miss it
"That was..Out of this World." Clever double comment. There is a card trick with a similar basic plot (separating the red and black cards without knowing) and it is called Out of this World.
Listen to the conversation at the beginning. "What a lovely, lovely, lovely, lovely, happy place we're in." It isn't %100, but a lot of the positive pictures evoke a loveliness, perhaps. "What was it, for example, that drew you to this person?" "..he seemed to be in a happy place, at a party or something.." Could that be a reaction to the word "happy" at the beginning, and the strongly morose location they're set in? Just a thought.
I love how he tells you how its done at the end. Just out of this world done with photographs. Love his ability to take a simple concept and make it meaningful.
One of the main concept of Darren is the fact, that he will repeat a trick as long a s he get the expected result. In this case I think he mixed some pictures of some "nice" and "ugly" people and repeated the trick with different candidates (remember that he started with nearly all ugly once then he swapped the mood with a very nice person and then swapped back with the man with the picture in the wrong orientation. There is a pretty good chance to get the expected result after a while...
I believe it has not only to do with the photograph of the person but the background image behind them. If you watch it again you can feel a presence of lonliness in each of the dead photos, but you can get a felling of vibrance from the alive photos.
He said "I imagine" at the beginning, he mentioned a happy happy place, and mentioned "instinct" He gave the impression of features associated with youth. Where you might say the guy with the sunglasses was rather youthful, he did in fact have glasses on and all the words with "I" gave him the impression also that those hiding their eyes weren't to be trusted.
@JollSSteR OMFG know where you are talking about and know where I was talking about, I was talking about a similart CARD TRICK! called out of this world :)
In my opinion, I'd go about this trick the same way as the horse-race episode like with the coin thing (having a low probability, but eliminating the non-probable examples). have a large pool of pictures and have many people separate them into 2 piles, and eventually a pattern will emerge. then you take all the living from one, and all the dead from the other. It might not be exact science, but it does follow a trend.
Guys, please! I am a big fan of Derren, but you know what he says: magic, psychology, misdirection, showmanship. This is a trick! Well-performed and as usual, Derren misdirects you.
And, he gives it away: That's out of this world. That's the name of the (card-) trick. Cheeky bastard. Google it: it's easy!
hahahha.... what is so semi-funny...is that right NOW the add to the right of this page...is of the tv series True Blood. And at the bottom of the add for season premiere, it says, "Do Bad Things" That is dangerous. The adverisers are careless and stupid. You don't have to watch clips of Darren Brown to know this in detail.... if you are in the advertising busieness... you KNOW ppl are influenced by those words and pictures etc. So I say they don't care. They want to sell. Money money
PWA (Perception Without Awareness)..Darren uses this a lot in his stage shows and street performances..ex. writing on things with black light marker..wording things a certain way (NLP)..The person he does the trick on is perceiving something without being aware of it..subconsciously taking it in..and actually helping the trick come together in the end..
All the alive people are partying, smiling, having a good time, all the dead folks photos, have sort of a negative energy to them, like face in hands, no smile, etc.
@mswagg30 What do you mean, "witchcraft"? It's a mind trick. The pictures are organized before hand, a detail on them just strikes you unconsciously. It works exactly the same way as advertising does. You don't know it, but the hidden message is there. the reason you're attracted to one product instead of another has most often nothing to do with your free will. It's instinctive, we all have the same unconscious collective, so the trick works on most people.
One thing I noticed was that Derren said he knew each of these people. Ff so he would likely have had a strong reaction each time a dead friend appeared - note that many of the dead appeared all together at the start. Someone as skilled in hypnosis, suggestion, etc as Derren could communicate this quite effectively I suspect, particularly to a man who works in a mortuary or cemetery - someone who would likely be relatively attuned to emotions associated with death based on everyday experience.
He does a similar trick with cards where a person sorts all the cards face down, then they turn out all red in one pile and all black in the other pile. Maybe the same sort of trick is being done.
well i think that derren uses some subliminal ink to write on the card without the man consciously realizing that , also he may have made the cards for those who are alive a little different than the other ones so subconsciously what the man does is that he subconsciously reorganizing them according to the cards' touch ..
No. He just knows how to recognize pictures that people will be unconsciously drawn to or put off by. He wrote ALIVE on the former and DEAD on the latter. That's all.
Darren Brown is a master at what he does - he uses his skills of manipulation, reading people, power of suggestion, hypnosis and the power of persuasion like a fine instrument. He is simply one of the best and I wish one day he would come to the US.
The photographs have two different atmosphere. One is sadness and one is happiness. So the guy just separated the two based on 'power of suggestion' what he likes and what he doesn't. Of course we like happiness and dislike sadness.
Well we do not know for sure that people on the photo are dead or still alive.
also wether its an illusion or not, when i saw the photo's all the ones that were 'dead' we sketchy photos or depressing photos but the alive ones were more happy looking and less sketchy.
Could it be he seperated them because of their looks? The positive pile was mostly people who were younger and lively, the negative pile had older and.. dare I say, uglier, people.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@illusionistdave im going to use my dick to smash you in the face its what i am going to use, and who uses the word douche? only people like you use it nowadays, stupid douche
It is simply a demnstration 2 shw u tht behind your mind state ther is somthing much more going on & that u mak decisions in life based on this interaction. If u learn how to master it 4 th highest virtuous purpse, ur creations arnd u will reflect ur inner world (mind/soul) Born out of a constant desire 2 knw th truth. U eventualy becom a master of creation of the inner (you) & outer worlds synchronizing as 1, creating th wrld u wnt 2 c happen. Use ur imagination, th application is incredible.
yeah. he keeps a pile at the end but never shows which cards are under the face card, instead flips the whole pile over and only shows the undersides.
hmmm i dont like this one.. it seems all of the "negative reaction" people were frowning and not happy.. and the positive had their tongue sticking out and smiles.
not really ,you should watch more carefully . For an example that really stands out he put a guy that had his face turned away in one photo and ge put it on the positive pile...
I know like three OOTW effects and none of them have them handling them so fairly....i dont know if it is under that category. at first i thought the same but ...eh maybe
I think it s easier to do with the pics. I figured it out now. All he did was thumb through the cards till the last one where they switch. He shows one of each ALIVE and DEAD pic. Then he just scoops up the two backend piles and switches them. When you turn the pics over no one thinks to check the pics to see if they were the ones they actually separated themselves.
The dead and alive thing has nothing to do with the actual trick, that was supposed to be the kicker.
Very simply, there is something very similar about each picture in each category. One thing that would invoke a negative reaction, and one that would invoke a positive reaction.
@ChristSatanChrist wrong, Its more complicated than that. Some pictures of dead people were in fact smiling and nothing negative about them. I don't believe that it was magic or something but I do believe that it was something in the photos.
I would have almost definitely categorized them all the exact same way. The negative image people all appeared to have some form of negative attributes, no matter what they may be, so I would have done the same thing.
not really, in "out of this world" there is a set up, and the decks switch color half way through for a certain reason. this cannot be done the same way
Actually it is just out of this world. He mentions the trick by name if you listen closely. And there are many other methods that don't require the switch. So it's not penguin magic's version but it is still out of this world.
Actually its not the photos that have energy; its the magical pixies you feel that float around the pictures of dead people to ward off the grim reaper trying to steal their souls... ooooooh.
and then you only record the situation in which the person picked them exactly and don't put the other situations where they were hit and miss on tv. I have a hard time believing a lot of these types of "experiements" unless i witness them first hand.
@tweener88 That was my first thought as well - the categories could have easily been 'attractive/nice/happy' and 'ugly/weird/sad', and his choices would have been just as accurate. Most people would have made the same choices.
Oh and I just noticed this. at 2:30, the guy's picture is upside down to represent the last "dead" picture, and it is the one Darren uses for a distraction later on.
hehe nice comments all around. but alot are mistaken..
derren brown is a genius i do admit.. but this here is a simple card trick of his called out of this world.. the photos are seperated before hand into alive/dead.. and each pile is bent in opposite directions..
when the spectator finishes sorting the fotos u notice derren ask what is special bout this foto.. and seperates the pile into two on the table (he found the gap by the difference in bent cards).. which he repeated with the other pile
I never thought of photos capturing a soul b4, I may have even laughed at the idea. He really made me think tho, I really couldn't stab a picture of a loved one as much as I know and try to convince myself its not really them just a picture. Very clever! I love this show, wish I could find it.
I think it was by the way the pictures were rotated or upside down. Maybe you instinctively put an upside down picture in the sad pile and then the very next one in the happy pile or something.
Brown take's general truths and presents them as 100% manipulative with perfect accuracy. There is a grain of truth in most of his schtick, but it is obvious to anyone with any scientific skepticism that this is more cult of personality than realistic tangibility.
That's possible. He understands how people think. We gravitate toward the familiar.
Subtle signals during the selection process is another possibility or a combo of both to re-enforce both suggestions.
The "happy expression" on the person's face could be a third re-enforcing suggestion but it seemed as though at least one selected was not looking at the camera in the photo.
Derren Brown is very talented & bright & courageous.
I posted a similar comment but I've rethought it. Too obvious. I don't think all the people chosen as "likeable" were facing the camera so no expression could be seen.
Either there's a different unifying characteristic that Mr. Brown suggested that distinguished the chosen "liked" group or the "disliked" group or the directive may have been suggested prior to the clip's beginning (off camera) or we missed it & went for the obvious or maybe Mr. Brown's facial expressions during selection.
Facial features almost entirely. People are attracted to symmetry, and people are not attracted to certain features, for instance, the woman with the gap in her teeth.
I'm guessing Derren selected photos knowing that people will be drawn to a particular kind of photo. For the living folks he selected photos that people would be drawn to, and for the dead he selected those photos that he knew people would generally not be drawn to, based upon whatever psychological assumptions he uses in general. I'd imagine that if he had found different photos for the dead people he'd be able to get the man to separate some of the dead into the living pile, and vice versa.
Look at the first three- the guy with the coffee is rather happy and is smiling. That guy was put into the same pile as the person covering his face with his hands

yeah. he keeps a pile at the end but never shows which cards are under the face card, instead flips the whole pile over and only shows the undersides.

hmmm i dont like this one.. it seems all of the "negative reaction" people were frowning and not happy.. and the positive had their tongue sticking out and smiles.
amieamie12 2 years ago
not really ,you should watch more carefully . For an example that really stands out he put a guy that had his face turned away in one photo and ge put it on the positive pile...

I know this trick but with the camera editing they don't show how he switches the last half of the pics. Frustrating!
TokyoUketarist 2 years ago
Derren made an easy trick "Out of This World even easier. Brilliant!
TokyoUketarist 2 years ago
I know like three OOTW effects and none of them have them handling them so fairly....i dont know if it is under that category. at first i thought the same but ...eh maybe
cheeky57 2 years ago
I think it s easier to do with the pics. I figured it out now. All he did was thumb through the cards till the last one where they switch. He shows one of each ALIVE and DEAD pic. Then he just scoops up the two backend piles and switches them. When you turn the pics over no one thinks to check the pics to see if they were the ones they actually separated themselves.
TokyoUketarist 2 years ago
yea thats the major issue w/ the trick i think.
i think your right for the most part, but where did you see the thumb count?
cheeky57 2 years ago
The dead and alive thing has nothing to do with the actual trick, that was supposed to be the kicker.
Very simply, there is something very similar about each picture in each category. One thing that would invoke a negative reaction, and one that would invoke a positive reaction.
(SUCH AS: Frowning + Smiling
ChristSatanChrist 2 years ago 39
@ChristSatanChrist wrong, Its more complicated than that. Some pictures of dead people were in fact smiling and nothing negative about them. I don't believe that it was magic or something but I do believe that it was something in the photos.
Mel0nsmasher 1 year ago
@ChristSatanChrist He puts allot of "smilers" in the "negative, dead"-ting, so if this is fake, it's not that simple...
folloWstian 1 year ago
I would have almost definitely categorized them all the exact same way. The negative image people all appeared to have some form of negative attributes, no matter what they may be, so I would have done the same thing.
AlgernonFTW 2 years ago
This is pretty obvious Its just out of this world by penguin magic with pictures
pogobat88 2 years ago
not really, in "out of this world" there is a set up, and the decks switch color half way through for a certain reason. this cannot be done the same way
XMA1080 2 years ago
Who knows? he might have done a camera cut at the switching part
pogobat88 2 years ago
Actually it is just out of this world. He mentions the trick by name if you listen closely. And there are many other methods that don't require the switch. So it's not penguin magic's version but it is still out of this world.

simple trick...what you do is you put the word "alive" behind the pictures of attractive people...and the word "dead" behind the uglies. simple.
tweener88 2 years ago 43
and then you only record the situation in which the person picked them exactly and don't put the other situations where they were hit and miss on tv. I have a hard time believing a lot of these types of "experiements" unless i witness them first hand.

@tweener88 Yeah, this one was shit.
jezmuff 1 year ago

DjKaupapa 2 years ago
I never thought of photos capturing a soul b4, I may have even laughed at the idea. He really made me think tho, I really couldn't stab a picture of a loved one as much as I know and try to convince myself its not really them just a picture. Very clever! I love this show, wish I could find it.
tigresuave11 2 years ago 2
I think it was by the way the pictures were rotated or upside down. Maybe you instinctively put an upside down picture in the sad pile and then the very next one in the happy pile or something.

Why must he not tell us how on this one!
Jokamania 2 years ago
Brown take's general truths and presents them as 100% manipulative with perfect accuracy. There is a grain of truth in most of his schtick, but it is obvious to anyone with any scientific skepticism that this is more cult of personality than realistic tangibility.

SacredSwordman 2 years ago 2
That's possible. He understands how people think. We gravitate toward the familiar.
Subtle signals during the selection process is another possibility or a combo of both to re-enforce both suggestions.
The "happy expression" on the person's face could be a third re-enforcing suggestion but it seemed as though at least one selected was not looking at the camera in the photo.
Derren Brown is very talented & bright & courageous.
His artwork is impressive too.
maryellen728 2 years ago
if you notice all the people that were still alive their fotograph is with a happy expression so it is more likely you put him at the people you like
and all the people who are still dead have a very angry or a face without any expression so it is more likely to put him at the people you dislike
an besides how i know this is not fake?
pavlaras 2 years ago
2:07 isn't a happy expression and it went in alive pile

I agree. On the other hand, she does appear to be a calm person.

2:07 is an attractive girl, thus the alive pile
turbointermission 2 years ago
I posted a similar comment but I've rethought it. Too obvious. I don't think all the people chosen as "likeable" were facing the camera so no expression could be seen.
Either there's a different unifying characteristic that Mr. Brown suggested that distinguished the chosen "liked" group or the "disliked" group or the directive may have been suggested prior to the clip's beginning (off camera) or we missed it & went for the obvious or maybe Mr. Brown's facial expressions during selection.
maryellen728 2 years ago
This guy is still alive and HAPPY.
I'll bet the undertaker comes across very few smiling corpses.
In the beginning, Mr. Brown talks about what a miserable place it is. He plants the suggestion of unhappiness and unlikeability.
maryellen728 2 years ago
Yea , but still you would make at least a few mistakes , because what translates as happy for you might translate as sad fro someone else :P

RufusShinra7 2 years ago
"Some are friends of mine, some are friends of friends."
That leads me to believe that some, if not most, are total strangers to Mr. Brown.
"Some" can be 10 or 8 or 2 or 1.
Don't you know one person who is dead?
He never acknowledged he knew more than one of the people who was dead.
He never said he knew "that many" of them.
It's natural to assume he knew most of them but that's not what he actually said.
If he said he knew all or most of them, that would be weird and scary.

popobrainz 2 years ago
Facial features almost entirely. People are attracted to symmetry, and people are not attracted to certain features, for instance, the woman with the gap in her teeth.
MrAndersonmm 2 years ago
I'm guessing Derren selected photos knowing that people will be drawn to a particular kind of photo. For the living folks he selected photos that people would be drawn to, and for the dead he selected those photos that he knew people would generally not be drawn to, based upon whatever psychological assumptions he uses in general. I'd imagine that if he had found different photos for the dead people he'd be able to get the man to separate some of the dead into the living pile, and vice versa.
