My two brothers and I had Cowboy shirts with our favorite Cowboy's name stitched across the front pocket. Hopalong Cassidy for Ted, Roy Rogers for Steve and for me, the name stitched across my shirt was Gene Autry. Gene and Johnny Mac Brown were my favorite cowboys. Those were the ugliest shirts you ever did see but we were so proud of those shirts we wore them to church to bed and to school. Ma had a tough time getting them off our backs so she could that she could wash them.
I was 8 years old when my Dad took me to see Gene in a Rodeo Show....and when Gene and Champion reared up right in front of me where I sat, and Gene waved his 10 gallon hat to the audience, it was the greatest thing I had ever seen.
I'll tell you who he is......he was a man who never forgot where he came from or the people who loved him. I was a messed up, drifting kid who found himself in L A, in the dismal summer of 1973. I was walking across the parking lot of some shopping mall. when I caught sight of a dapper old dude who looked vaguely familiar. Then, my brain switched on and I bellowed something about "saddles, again". Looking back, the expression on his gently weathered face was clear. "Another one."
@theshadow1932 But, although he was retired and independently wealthy, he shook my hand and chatted with me for what must have been a full 20 minutes, about everything from 'Phantom Empire' to the dime store pistol set that my gramma bought me for Christmas, 1959. Well, Sir, Hoppy, Roy and You really DID teach us how to shoot straight, or to at least want to. If I'm good enough to eventually shake hands with you and the others some day, it'll be mostly your doing.
love it, i have this lp (record), and think it's different from the others, i never hear these songs on the radio, or on other cd's of him. So i am glad i still have this record lp.
