man ive been playing this completely wrong, ive been playing the power chord from the 2nd/4th strings and sliding down to the 5th/7th strings

that is almost completely opposite from what ive been playing it ive been starting with a F# powerchord on the fourth fret and sliding down to the seventh

No. You can see the quilt on the maple top. I'd go with a tobacco-ish sunburst, or what Gibson calls a "Burnt Wheat Burst".
