  • can't locate your products on amazon.com but thank you to both LA Fish Guys and Reef Dynamics for the time and an very educational series of videos

  • This is the best chapter by far. The most informative lecture on skimmer ever. Thank you guys!

  • Mike, this is your best episode yet. Don't get me wrong. I love seeing the huge aquariums you work on. This really answers all my questions on protein skimmers. My budget doesn't allow me to be wrong with initial equipment purchases. I feel really confident that I can pick the right one now. Jeff was a great interviewee. Instead of just selling us on his product, he did a good job of explaining different designs and what they do. Only then did he say why he chose his design.

  • So he says a wet /dry is bad? Why? Can you make a video about various sumps and filters for aquariums?

  • wow! i found this vid to be amazing. and i only do freshwater

  • wow best explenation on skimmers jet thanks

  • any more lafishguy or is that the end now?

  • wow i must say i love the advice given in the past parts or this episode! That protein skimmer that he demonstrated was beastly!! Great video Jim thanks!

  • what another brilliant video Jim! is there any chance on what ozone are and what they do in another video?

  • hey D, no plans to discuss Ozone.

  • Great video Jim. Lots of info. You gotta check out Ecosystem Miracle Mud. NO SKIMMER NEEDED. you can put one on it but you only need to run it 2-4 hrs a day. You also dont need a huge sand bed and or lots of live rock for it to work etc. I am building a 185gal reef tank and I am thinking about using the 3616 sump that they make. Let me know what you think

  • hey T, i am a long ways away from even considering a refugium, or even that mud stuff.

  • @taedom OK, you might not need a skimmer with a big enough refugium but why wouldn't want one? A skimmer can only benefit any saltwater aquarium.

  • @pfunky21 its my first go around with a salt water reef tank. If you watch the ecosystem miracle mud videos on you tube it all makes sense to me. Plus its one less piece of equipment to buy. With the sump that they sell there is a spot to put a skimmer but I will see how it goes with out one to start.

  • @taedom

If they claim a skimmer is not needed then why also say run it for 2-4hrs a day?

  • @200ltrRoma If you decide to buy a skimmer, it is said to only run the skimmer for 2-4 hrs a day according to Leng the owner of Ecosystem miracle mud. But with his system you dont need 1 so you get to save $200-500 not to mention the electricity cost. I dont know I am building a 185 reef tank and not getting a skimmer to start so we shall see. Check my video's on you tube and ill keep you posted.

  • Just my 2 cents here on the refugium in the last episode. Just to warn you that the rubbermaid container you used may leach out PO4 back into the tank itself. I myself have always used either acrylic sumps or FDA approved food grade containers for any type of sump modification. Great episodes though!!! keep them coming, you always have me watching!

    Marc

  • @MoneyMarcMes I second that, only white, yellow and some gray rubbermaid containers are FDA approved food grade. Good observation.

  • hey jim...GREAT VIDEO! Just when I thought I knew what a protein skimmer was, you go and do this vid... now I know it all, hahaha! hey how's that little algae filter doing? I was thinking of doing the same on my 120.

  • hey J, thanks, the Algae Filter is still working on doing its job. wait for the update.

  • Was just wondering after those loooooonnnngggggg vids on the protein skimmer, how come you didn't have him explain how to use an Ozone generator with these skimmers?

  • hey M, well, the emphasis of the story was about protein skimming. using O3 changes a skimmer into a reactor, and thats not what the story was about.

  • thanks jim great videos your the best

  • Although I believe some of the information is a bit biased, considering that Jeff is from Euro Reef/Reef Dynamics, nevertheless, great information on how skimmers work. I have always been a huge fan of Euro Reef, and rate them as one of the top skimmers for their cost. Keep the videos coming.

  • Probably one of the best and most informative set of videos (ep 88, 1-7) you've made Jim. When I get the funds I will really look into buying a skimmer from Reef Dynamics.

  • Thanks for the series Jim. :) One i've wanted to see (and I don't remember if you've done one or not) Is what to consider buying when setting up a new tank particularly from scratch.

  • hes well spoken, get an update on scotts system!

  • Great info regarding skimmers!! Thanks guys!

  • top video's there thanks to jim jeff and scott who was hiding away a bit hehehe keep them vid's coming jim :)

  • ty for the info , but ive always been wondering , i have many fresh water tanks , do fresh water fish need a skimmer or would it be beneficial if i had one ?

  • hey J, protien skimmers dont work in fresh water.

  • @lafishguy ty , wasn't planing on buying one , just wanted to know : )

  • @maxpawl Protein skimmers do work on fresh water, thats how they first got started. Water treatment plants back in the day. So yes you can have a skimmer on a gold fish system.
