I thought your video was very helpful. Although I need to take a class to learn how to use my 50D, can you tell me how to set mine to the highest possible resolution so I can blow up a photo into a poster or banner? Help please.
Nice review, mamerican7772... I have just purchased the 50D along with the 24-105mm 'L' IS USM lens. I opted for the 50D over the newer 60D simply because of two factors: 1) magnesium alloy body vs plastic and 2) the 50D is strictly for photography - no video capabilities. I have a high def video camera which has photographic capabilties, too, but I don't use it as a still camera. The 50D is tried and true and for ~1/3rd the price of the 5D Mark II, you get (with a nice Lens) great shots.
@PuppyPowy Not sure if you've bought a camera already, but you're better off going with an entry level camera (Canon Rebel XS/Nikon D3000) before moving up to a camera like this.
Despite what most people think, giving a beginner a better camera will not improve their photography skills whatsoever. You're better off getting a cheaper entry level and learning the basics of photography while investing in some good lenses, rather than spend money on a better body with crap lenses.
This camera is a winner.. Gapless CMOS to grab the light.
When you added the L lens that just put it over the top.
I'll say what matters most is the lens... then the camera. If you can't get the light you can't get the detail to the (film) Sensor. The 50D has a gapless sensor.
Even "fairy" megapixie dust will not help, if you can't get the light.

Nice video - if I were to make only one suggestion drink a cup of coffee before filming. Wake up, smile while you talk, bring some energy into your voiceover. Otherwise nicely done. ;)
I've noticed the physical quality and grip on the Canon EOS xxD series not to be as satisfying as the Dxxx Nikons series, especially the D300 Nikon which has a very nice grip.. Anyone who agree/disagree please tell
It does'n matter what camera you buy, all you do is capturing light and when speed is not a factor, you can even use the very first DSLR like the Canon 1N with digital back from Kodak and use a tripod. When you have the artistic eye and use your imagination, you can make any high tech modern DSLR look like a piece of rubbish.
It is better to have better glass on a old tech body and use the full potential of the camera can do in it's limits.
@HARMONICA777 Your point is valid but not entirely. A good camera does not make a good photographer. However having a capable camera expands your opportunities and allows you to better exercise your creativity through ease of use. Having a range of features frees up technical obstacles so you can focus on your art.
It's a good camera, but without an L series lens, you won't get the most out of the 15 mp sensor. If you're going to spend the money for a nice camera, spend the money on a nice lens, too.
Hello from Ireland dude! Thank you for your review...its great! I need some help. I was going to buy the 40D but now with the 40D discontinued by Canon the 50D seems the right choice? ...confused!
Price difference here in Ireland is not that much. 40D(€959) 50D(€1099) both with the 17-85mm IS lens... what you think ?
Truth be told, I don't think you should buy either camera. Many are expecting the Canon 60D to be released within the coming months. It will probably incorporate a higher resolution sensor and Full HD video plus a few other changes. As for the 17-85mm IS Lens, I would say to stay away. A friend of mine has that lens and I have yet to see any kind of quality come out of that lens. Your best option would be the canon 17-40mm F4L lens which I have a video about. I hope this helped.
Cheers my man, I would imagine the 60D will be an expensive piece of kit and maybe more kit than i need??? H.D. video function really does not appeal to me, its something i would not use. Cheers for the lens advise. I am going to buy the 50D i think...should i get the body only and then buy a decent lens or just go for the lens kit ?. Cheers mate..
@040506keri I have a video camera. I don't need or want one in my still camera. I have the Canon EOS 50D. I have the 17-85mm lens. Works perfectly. Quality is great. No Problems.
@mamerican7772 Well I have the 50D with the 17-85mm lens and it's great. This lens is quality and I have photos to prove that, maybe your friend needs few tips on how to take photos using the 50D? Months have passed and 60D is still not here.. Anyone that got 50D don't care much about the video on their dslr.. and why the higher resolution? If anyone wanted over 15mp on their DSLR then I would recommend getting a full size sensor and not cramping that pixels into a smaller sensor!

The Nikon D90 is a toy with Kids video built in and a plastic body, just like a toy. Check all the lastest mag reviews Canon 50D vs Nikon D300. It's not rocket science. The closest thing to the D90 the 50D has is its bargin price.
The Nikon D300 is way over priced thats why not the D300. Thumbs up to Canon! I just put the Canon 50D on lay buy and can't wait to take her home. gunsarecool1985 at least you know the D300 is compared to the 40 & 50D some people on you tube try comparing it to the Nikon D90 just because of the price similarity they have no idea!!!
actually they are similar, the canon just has higher fps, better weather sealing, and no video, as well as more megapixels, which is really irrelevant. Also, the d300 really isn't overpriced. If you're having trouble choosing between nikon, canon, olympus, etc. just go to a store, see which one is more comfortable in your hands, and take it home and trust me you will still make great pictures. (unless you have extremely specialized needs or an investment in one manufacturers lenses.)
NOT OVER PRICED! The Canon EOS 50D is 1200 while the Nikon D300 is 2000! You have to pay an extra 800 for Nikon. Nikon may have a 51- point AF system, and some extra features, but those are actually for semi-professionals or even professionals. Not for advanced amateurs. Plus, Canon has a higher amount of mega pixels. It comes down to this, are you ready to pay an extra 800 for extra features and a 51- point AF system.
Im saving money for this camera...For now I am using an xsi and I really love it but after reading and doing a lot of research bout this 50d I just can't wait anymore...good job doing the reviews...
Thanks for the review. Ordered one from B&H Friday with 17-40L and 430EX II. Moving up from an XSi and 380EX but keeping it as a second body. The XSi is no slouch for an entry level DSLR but I like the feature set and new LCD of the 50D.
LOL big boy camera. Great reveiw.I'm planning of getting this camera. You should do a reveiw on the 70-200mm lens.P.S B&H is the best camera store to go to I love it there.

is it okay for a beginner to use the 50d? Im planning to use the 18-75 lens, but most people say that it sucks.
Im still new to the whole dslr thing, but i really wanna shoot some really good photos, just dont know which one suits me

i have the 50D over an year now!!
and i have just one lens....(18-200mm is)
and it's satisfactory..... now i've tried and low light fixed lens 50mm.... and I did't imagined that it could do such amazing quality pictures.
So if you want to buy 50D...think of buyng different types of lenses and you will be surprised what it can do!!!
Try this L lenses...they are really great

You must also consider resolution. We most DSLRS are just beginning to capture a resolution similar to that of film.
