Believe it or not its actually safer to fly through a thunderstorm than around it. The cloud is filled with water molecules and ice crystals that act as beacons to which the lightning connects to, lessening the chance for lightning to single out the airplane. If the airplane were to fly around and close to the thunderstorm then the airplane would be be large singled out connecting object for a lightning bolt to arc to. I'm not making this up, saw it on National Geographic :)

Theres a lot of upward drafts inside of thunder head clouds that can cause some nasty turbulence (like you said), I dont think I would wanna get caught in that crap either. The main risks associated with thunderstorms are the severe icing which de-icing and anti-icing equipment will probably not be able to cope with. Ice accretion on the leading edges of the wings cause you to both lose lift and increase drag. Bad news. Its the downdrafts inside and underneath the thunderstorm that also pose a great risk, they can be faster than the maximum rate of climb....

Well a lightning strike shouldn't even damage the plane. The wings have some elektromagnetic conductors which are actually ment to guide the lightning. If a plane gets hit, it's quite normal though.

There are Static Wicks on the trailing edge of the wings, ailerons, and tail surfaces. It appears that what happened in your video came off the static wick, which acts as a natural ground for the airframe. This would be expected in a thunderstorm, and is harmless.

The effect I had mentioned also permits one to survive a lightning strike. The deadly current travels around the person, not through their heart entirely. The immense heat created by this crazily high amperage causes burns, but the person's heart is protected by this effect. Lightning is at an extremely high voltage, but at a slightly lower voltage or at the voltage of smaller lightning strikes, you will be able to touch arcs safely with a Faraday Suit, a Faraday Cage you wear. However, my dad is an retired 747-400 check pilot and my uncle an retired military pilot, and they both have told me that is one item out there they don't mess around with. Go around, turn around or land ASAP he always taught me. There is no plane that can handle a full blown T. You may stumble into one by mistake and only the Lord can save you then. Lighting would be the least of you're problem.
That is correct. Flight crews are trained to never fly in to a thunderstorm. The primary cause of the crash of AA 1420 per the NTSB was the crew's decision to fly in to the storm rather than go around it. They were bumping up against duty time limits and wanted to land ASAP. The crew took a risk and lost big time.

Kinda hard to go VFR at night when you are in the soup, not to mention a thunderstorm. I have lost instrumentation in a 121 airplane at night in a thunderstorm complex and it isn't as cut and dry as you might think it would be. Lightning is not a significant risk to aircraft, but it can cause problems for the crew.

@Louisthefish23 Fly-by-wire system are concealed inside the fuselage and protected by layers of insulation. For addition, static spikes on wings will dissipate lightning energy into air instead charging up in cabin.

@thejack544 are you sure? crash investigation said the lightening strike shorted the electrics which cut out hydraulics & engines etc, which meant it couldnt stop resulting in crashing at the end of the runway in a ball of flames.
@LaminaDieWills the atc gave him the shortest runway available nd the runways were very wet and he landed halfway through on the runway which was the shortest so the odds were: crash and why did he land halfway cuz the winds were tough and thepilot was struggling to land well :) i hoped my info helped u

@thejack544 perhaps low fuel, flying into high force winds really burns a lot of fuel so perhaps they depleted their reserves. But many pilots have this way of flying where they dont want to put more stress on themselves, the crew or the actual airframe......I just wish they would rationalize better, maybe have an automatic warning in the flightdeck computers that if weather is far too bad to immediately alter the flightpath to the alternate and send the data to ATC so they can track it.

@flyboy242 Dont torture the pax, 188043, sitting up the back is the worst thing you can do. Sit over the wing, you get the least movement. The tail is susceptible to all motions. Consider the central part of wing as, essentially, the fulcrum for all directions of motion.

every bump they have generally knocks a couple of hours off an aircraft's life. Turbulence emphasises metal fatigue. It's why they avoid storms. storms = turbulent air which wears the aircraft down... any damage will be extended in severe turbulence.
Quick note on storms and aircraft. Lightning poses aircraft no danger. the aircraft isn't grounded at all, so the lightning will pass through it on the way to the ground.
@p3rs0n42 Sure a lightning can make damage to an aircraft. The lightning usually leaves a hole in the skin where it hits the aircraft. It also takes out the static wicks or nav. lights if the lightning "choses" to leave there. The aircraft usually works like a faraday cage, but not always.
Regarding turbulence: The aircraft is taking surpricingly small g-load from turbulence. It feels violent but you can pull much more g just by flying the plane more aggresively.
In every video I've seen so far of lightning from a plane window, there's always tons of comments saying "I would never fly again" or "I would be shitting myself". Before telling the thousands of people that will read your comments that you would lose control of your bowels if you saw a lightning bolt from a plane, go on wikipedia and type in "Faraday Cage" to see why you would be shitting yourself for something that poses you no real danger other than being beaten by the person next to you.

And I will be flying off tonight overseas back home, so :3 couple more takeoff vids. Only once have I witnessed a lightning storm over air, and it was beautiful. Another time we were (*snigger*) grounded due to a lightning storm (wonderful purple strikes :3)

However, my dad is an retired 747-400 check pilot and my uncle an retired military pilot, and they both have told me that is one item out there they don't mess around with. Go around, turn around or land ASAP he always taught me. There is no plane that can handle a full blown T. You may stumble into one by mistake and only the Lord can save you then. Lighting would be the least of you're problem.

That is correct. Flight crews are trained to never fly in to a thunderstorm. The primary cause of the crash of AA 1420 per the NTSB was the crew's decision to fly in to the storm rather than go around it. They were bumping up against duty time limits and wanted to land ASAP. The crew took a risk and lost big time.

again...WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE SCARED OF!!!??? a plane can survive a lightning strike. it might mess with the avionics, but any competent pilot can fly VFR if absolutely need be...or divert if you cant land safely at your primary (destination for everyone here who doesnt speak pilot)

Kinda hard to go VFR at night when you are in the soup, not to mention a thunderstorm. I have lost instrumentation in a 121 airplane at night in a thunderstorm complex and it isn't as cut and dry as you might think it would be. Lightning is not a significant risk to aircraft, but it can cause problems for the crew.

@nighthawk0077 haha...nope. when i was in the navy, i had to fly thru something just like this when i was on cruise...i was a bit interested if i was going to lose my nav instruments and would have to do everything the old fashioned way...and the only thing i said was a nice hmmm...this is a decent storm here. see, for some reason, people whoare'nt used to flying thru anything get freaked if you run into a li'l chop...let alone a mess like this. gotta admit though...free entertainment !

@Louisthefish23 Fly-by-wire system are concealed inside the fuselage and protected by layers of insulation. For addition, static spikes on wings will dissipate lightning energy into air instead charging up in cabin.

You mean, you have a Destination and Alternate or ETOP's! and one other thing, I dont know if Rod on flight simulator allows you to do it, but my company doesnt let us transfer from IFR to VFR and i bet this one in the video dosent. Especially when in the video, its clearly shown VFR conditions dont even exist.

You need at least 1000' vertical visibility and 5000' horizontal visibility to fly VFR, now, you're inside a thunderstorm so that should cut down to about the distance from your eyes to the windshield. Flying into a thunderstorm should be avoided always, or might just be lucky anought to get to the other side, to realise that the blue sky over your head is the ocean, and you've been flying upside down.

@thejack544 are you sure? crash investigation said the lightening strike shorted the electrics which cut out hydraulics & engines etc, which meant it couldnt stop resulting in crashing at the end of the runway in a ball of flames.

@thejack544 perhaps low fuel, flying into high force winds really burns a lot of fuel so perhaps they depleted their reserves. But many pilots have this way of flying where they dont want to put more stress on themselves, the crew or the actual airframe......I just wish they would rationalize better, maybe have an automatic warning in the flightdeck computers that if weather is far too bad to immediately alter the flightpath to the alternate and send the data to ATC so they can track it.

@Isobel201 thunderstorms are a big no no for planes.. you really should much rather be on the ground... ya sometimes you fly in them but its not something you just go "oh just another thunderstorm" i bet those pilots are wide awake monitoring everything and getting flight assistance for the shortest flight time in the actual storm. and if they arent. they are really really stupid and i would never wanna fly with them. you see TS on the metar and you shouldnt even go there. thats how things work.

@flyboy242 Dont torture the pax, 188043, sitting up the back is the worst thing you can do. Sit over the wing, you get the least movement. The tail is susceptible to all motions. Consider the central part of wing as, essentially, the fulcrum for all directions of motion.

every bump they have generally knocks a couple of hours off an aircraft's life. Turbulence emphasises metal fatigue. It's why they avoid storms. storms = turbulent air which wears the aircraft down... any damage will be extended in severe turbulence.
Quick note on storms and aircraft. Lightning poses aircraft no danger. the aircraft isn't grounded at all, so the lightning will pass through it on the way to the ground.

@p3rs0n42 Sure a lightning can make damage to an aircraft. The lightning usually leaves a hole in the skin where it hits the aircraft. It also takes out the static wicks or nav. lights if the lightning "choses" to leave there. The aircraft usually works like a faraday cage, but not always.
Regarding turbulence: The aircraft is taking surpricingly small g-load from turbulence. It feels violent but you can pull much more g just by flying the plane more aggresively.

In every video I've seen so far of lightning from a plane window, there's always tons of comments saying "I would never fly again" or "I would be shitting myself". Before telling the thousands of people that will read your comments that you would lose control of your bowels if you saw a lightning bolt from a plane, go on wikipedia and type in "Faraday Cage" to see why you would be shitting yourself for something that poses you no real danger other than being beaten by the person next to you.
