  • I saw this movie 3 years ago and still it gives me the chills to my spine!!! Any body can be like him.... The movie's ending is one of the greatest ever!

  • Just watched it, though the ending left me wanting more, I felt there was too much of the film left that I didn't see, it could have revealed much more.

  • @stratocaster1986able i think that was the point your not supposed to now everything

  • Bizarrely, George Sluizer remade his own masterpiece a few years later -- and it was total crap. What's worse, his "Americanized" version starred Keifer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock (in the Saskia role) and Nancy Travis (as the new girlfriend). Adding insult to injury, he tacked on a "saved in the nick of time" ending.

    Barf!!!

  • the remake is a bit better, not much tho, but the ending on the original is far better, so they are both worth seeing!!!

  • The ending is like Buried with Ryan Reynolds..Stuck in a box..No way out

  • the final sequence of this film is the second scariest piece of movie I have ever seen the scariest for be was La cabina ~(1972)

  • I watched this Franco-Dutch film on Stagevu but could not understand it because it was without subtitles. I think if this film could be followed with subtitles it would be a truly great film.

  • Absolute thriller masterpiece, one of the best films ever made, i won't say anything about the poor american remake but..pathetic.

Btw this is a Dutch/French film, both the director and the novelist who wrote the story are Dutch, just to make it clear since some people think it's all French, the original title is Spoorloos.

  • The American version wasn't as good as this one. Not even close, really

  • It's scary because I think I would die not knowing what happened to someone I loved, I don't know how far I'd go to find out!

  • Probably the most chilling & believable portrayal of a sociopath. You watch shows like "Dexter" & realize how cartoonish it is.

  • No blood, violence or gore.....yet one of the creepiest horror films ever. Couldn't sit though the US remake though because I knew they changed the ending.

  • What the hell is this man? Where the hell is the Dude?

  • the American version is absolutely terrible compared to the original film. The French version is 100 times better and leaves you in suspense instead of Hollywood having to try and make the audience happy by having a cheesy "happy" ending..remake=terrible

  • @lbsoftball06 is there this version but with english voice over because having to read subtitles during the whole movie will ruin the effect of it

  • @kisskissh Trust me english dubbing will ruin the effect of the movie even more than reading subtitles. Maybe foregin movies are not meant for you.

  • How can this be the vanishing trailer if I'm watching it right now?

  • american end! always good

  • now that's hugo strange right there :)

  • It scared the shit out of my too,im very intelligent with people,i mean i can read them, their eyes, body language etc. Im very instinctive and i know a bad situation before it unfolds but this guy was smart but the other one was so stupid, why the fuck would you get into a car with a killer,a sick but smart being, why?

  • @zatch10013 well, not because he's stupid, but because he's so desperate to know, that he would rather know it then live. so he knows he's going to die anyways, i don't think that's stupid if that's his goal, in that case it's the right decision, but the most people's goal would be living. excuses for a bit crappy english.

  • @COSMOenWANDA there is no way he could ever know that what he is experiencing at the end is really what happened to his girlfriend because he would have to accept the premise that the kidnapper is going to show hi the truth but there is n way he can be 100 percent sure that he will do it. eventually something totally different could have happened to her but we assue it's the same thing because we trust the word of a sociopath.

  • @zatch10013 he was so desperate that he wound rather die knowing, then live without knowing and suffer.

  • I seen the American one

  • @MrSouthphillyitalian which was terrible with that horrible Hollywood style happy ending.

  • @MrSouthphillyitalian na it was real good . if i watched this one i would need to read subtitles btw it looks retarded its a cheap made movie

  • the ending reminded me so much of buried

  • @IanRepash "Buried" is the end of that film here stretched to 2 hours.

  • Great movie..confusing, non-sensical trailer.

  • @KevsHardLemonade

Agreed. Doubt I would have bothered to check this one out if I had seen the trailer first, which would have been a shame.

  • @monkeys37 Yeah its probably the worst trailer to one of the best movies.

  • It is. It has something to do with the story by Tim Krabbé or whatever.. Saskia is supposed to be speaking Dutch, and she's trying to ask him if he has some spare change for her in French. He always goes after people who are from a different country.

    The book is very interesting.

  • Johanna ter Steege is incredibly beautiful

  • OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS MOVIE IS FRENCH! That's AMAZING! I am SOO watching it.

PS: I'm French :D And I'm proud cause my country tends to make awesome movies (which sadly because they're not from Hollywood aren't as famous as all the crap they make).

  • @will612612 i dont think its french,, i belive it is actually a netherlands movie,, with a lot of french dialogue

  • @will612612 It's not French but one of the main actors is French lmao

  • @djdjerojr so? he's playing the most interesting character of the whole film.

  • This movie is the shit. One of the most scary ones ever made. The most disturbing ending in the history of filmmaking.

  • the book was so weird. I had to read it for Dutch and it was short but did tell a lot of information... weird ending though, didn't expect him to die ***SPOILER***

  • @Kayleighdh you write SPOILER before giving the ending away.

  • @AloysBarron I'm sorry :$

I hope I didn't ruin it for you. It's still a good book though...

  • awesome movie.real horror

  • this movie is frickin insane!!!! really awesome,,, so awesome i'm only watching european films from now on,,,

  • @ernieevh Hard to believe George Sluizer directed the sugarcoated American remake of his masterpiece.

    -R78

  • @Rodimus78 i know, that proves that the lack of ¨¨interesting¨ movies isn´t because of talent but because of dumb hollywood making everything so comercial.

  • @ernieevh I don't mind comercialized products as long as it doesn't corrupt the quality of the product. I wish Mr. Sluzier made a deal w/ Hollywood to leave The Vanishing alone & allow him to make a different suspense movie from scratch. That what Matt Groening did when he kept creative control of Life In Hell & pitched The Simpsons for FOX which was a basic inspiration & that was a safe bet on his part. I wonder what became of George Sluzier. Is he still making new wave movies?

    -R78

  • @Rodimus78 you have a good point, there are a lot of comercial successes that are good movies. i think sluizer´s last movie was called stone raft. it came out like in 2003, i think.

  • just watched this again after not having seen it in about ten years.

Still packs such an amazing punch

  • Because it is much more conceivable than plots like "Saw" or "Hostel" it is one of the most scary movies ever. It could happen to everybody at any time anywhere.

  • also, this ending was depressing. and i'll agree with what someone else said, it was a pretty terrifying ending.

saskia, looked like courtney love in a way. but anyway im glad to have seen this movie. knowing now there's a book which this came from, i'll have to add that to my reading list.=p

  • i just finished watching this movie. it's given me the same effect i've always gotten after watching a 'foreign flick'. the endings have a way of taking hold of my perspectives. whether it was a bad ending or a good ending, they just do and make me think, especially the whole going against what is predestined. im always going by what is predestined and should i do something right now as i already know what's going to happen. it's all about the choices we make. it's kinda depressing.

  • WTF?! 0:22

  • What made this movie so interesting, so creepy, was the fact that the main focus of the movie was the criminal. It really gives you a glimpse into the way the wheels turn in the mind of an intelligent sociopath.

  • Awesome movie. Finally not a american remake bullshit.Original, good storyline, and a very good ending...

  • Lol, she didnt say shit.:P

It was something else. Movie is censured

  • This movie is an unbelievable shocker with the most terrifying ending I have ever seen in any movie.

  • a thought just came to me...does anyone else think the music in the background is a synth version of Ravel's "Toccata" ?

  • I've read the book. It's a good one.

  • guess the dutch version is much better than the americain one. Actually the dutch movie doesn´t include these heroic deeds compared to the woman´s acts in the end of the americain movie. It´s more realistic that Rex dies in the end, I mean that´s what he said, isn´t it "Si Saskia est morte, moi je vais mourir aussi." Moreover the story of the golden eggs has to be completed and this isn´t possible in case of Rex survival..

  • @janaschatz19 The amazing thing is that the director of the original and the director of the american version is the same man... he chose to destroy his own movie

  • i miss ifc running this

  • Amazing movie with a brilliant soundtrack. The background music when Rex is coming out of the tunnel to pick up Saskia in his car shakes me to the core...so scary

  • One of the best movies ever. A real classic. Too bad Sluizer tried to pimp this film by going Hollywood. It hurt the films legacy and somewhat harmed his genius.

  • Jezus, wat een belabberde kut-trailer

  • The remake was horrible.

  • the remake was better ;]

  • One of the scariest films I have ever see. Brilliant.

On my all time favorite films list.

  • I saw this movie when i I was 8, I guess, and it will haunt me forever

I can't enter into a gas station in the middle of a road anymore without remembering this unsettling movie

  • How disturbing is this film? Is it "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" caliber?

  • @CitizenKANE2277 Odd, the score reminded me of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. I watched this film a few hours ago. Is it as disturbing as Henry? No. Henry REALLY disturbed me. However, the ending for this film disturbed me immensely, and it might get worse over the next few days..

  • No, more psychological. No blood at all.

  • Excellent, excellent film. I cannot recommend this enough.

  • a stunning movie...simply outstanding in so many ways...probably the nearest we will get to actually observing a real 'sociopath'.

  • This was an incredibly frightening film because it showed the merciless depth of evil a human being could perpetrate against another. Unlike the cheap American version which dictates a happy ending, this one played out the to the end with the awful results of the professor's actions and the awful fate of the young man desperate to know what happened to his girlfriend. I'm frightened again just watching this and remembering the film many years ago. Evil people like this exist.

  • Great movie, horrible ending,... only one person in the world I'd like to meet this fate.

  • This is an excellent movie, one of the best suspense films of all time.

  • About to order this off amazon.. i've been wanting to watch it for quite some time.

  • A slow and disturbing film, at first I didn't think it was that impressive. But then thinking about it later it becomes so much more horrifying than any gore or special effects could do. Really gets under your skin and is the sort of film you never forget. The remake is awful imo.

  • omgsh was he married to teenages like those 3 girls at the table? cuz thats really creepy

  • @dustieeeee no, he wasn't. two girls where his daughters, and the woman is his wife.

  • i just got finished watching this. its a very disturbing film. i just wished i didnt already see the ending before i watched this. i saw it on bravo's 100 scariest movie moments. dont watch that unless you have seen all of the movies it shows cuz it has ruined a lot of them for me

  • Kubrick thought this movie was very scary.

  • @detriplea

Kubrick had the actress who plays Saskia in 'The Vanishing' earmarked for the main role in his unmade 'Aryan Papers'.

  • Thanks for the enlightenment.

  • @detriplea i do too,,

  • i seen the American version and loved it.... the Psychological Thriller is my favorite genre. Just got this one from Netflix today, getting ready to watch it! I hear it's much better than the remake.

  • Let me know what you think.

  • @dscottkerr The American version was dreadful in comparison scott. Even Sluizer hated it, having to water the end down for the US audience. Watch the European one, it'll send shivers down the spine at the end.

  • @dscottkerr Glad you liked the remake. I wonder if you love the European version even more.

    -R78

  • @dscottkerr

Happy Hollywood ending ruins the film. The original is a masterpiece.

  • this is a joke right?

  • the american version was a sad cop-out.one of the saddest films i have ever seen. i've bought it, it was quite hard to get hold of.sub-titles don't bother me. it's riveting from start to finish. i feel so sad for the couple, it must be a horrible death. i could'nt stop thinking of this film for days after i first seen it. even though i bought it years ago i can't bring myself to watch it again. i go to but then say i'm not ready yet.

  • I watched this move years ago with my wife. the girl at the video store told us it was romantic. One of the most psycological films we've ever seen We couldn't sleep that night. Definately not a romance!

  • I have to see this movie for dutch :( I also read the book and I hate this story. I don't understand why rex wanted to risk his own life only to know how Saskia died?

  • If you don't find it believable/understandable, it might be easiest for you to understand it purely as a narrative device for understanding the lengths one will go in extremes of compassion and obsession. Or just a device to get a damn scary ending. Perhaps it's a male thing, I can certainly understand Rex. I think for Rex, Saskia was a beacon, and they were very much like two golden eggs floating through the universe (and colliding), even before death - he couldn't leave her, alive or dead.

  • One of my favourite films, a masterpiece, absolute genius of scriptwriting and direction.

  • Is this an original

  • the ending of this film really creeped me out. also the camera angles from the killers eyes at the moterway services it was abit like a documentry

  • I didnt know the original was french. I must see it, I only saw the american version, where Sandra Bullock is the kidnapped.

  • is there an english version of this movie??

  • I know where you can download this movie with english subtitles.

  • @murtagh27 Yes and its much much better, Sandra Bullock,...

  • This is a fantastic film...why on earth hollywood remade it with the ridiculous change of ending is anybodys guess

  • it was harder for me to watch this than the texas chainsaw massacre

  • "Monsieur Poof"

Such a good, yet stunningly disturbing, film.

  • the funniest bit of this film is when he's asking folk to help with his trailer and says "I must eat shit"

  • Absolute genius. Why they remade it, no one will ever know.

  • oh dear that last sentence just gave me the creeps!

  • The most horrible crime I've ever seen in a movie. The most terrible way to die anyway. I hope no one did that in reality just because they saw it in this movie.

  • i just watched it, i think its amazing

  • Would you were kind enough to explain me why this film is amazing??

Ok it was a film about obsession but it never got really frightening..

  • i found it thrilling, you don't know what is going to happen next, not sure what has happened, right until the end. i loved it.

  • Horribly sucky trailer

  • i agree, the trailer doesn't do it justice.

  • all trailers from this era were crap

  • this truly is one of the most shocking and disturbing movies in cinema history!!!!

  • I watched this again last night since like 5 years ago, and I think ive finally figured everything out. Thank you for posting this trailer

  • tell me!

  • this movie FREAKING ROCKS! so scary! but i love it!

  • Excellent movie, decent trailer as well.
