I grew up in an Italian section of Brooklyn in the 60's and 70's. I actually heard mothers calling their kids from the windows, and there were a few "ANN-TO-NEEEEEE"s too. And you came running to Mamma or you got the baccala on the culo! :)
CLASSIC. There was this kid Anthony who used to be in my elementary school and we used to imitate this commercial all the time and it would drive him nuts!
ANTHONY!
I don't even know if he was Italian! Poor kid... LOL
Does anyone know the exact location of this house in the North End of Boston? My husband and I were in the North End today and we walked on Prince Street. We were told this was the street where the commerical was filmed. We were just wondering if anyone knew the exact address?
Anthony knows a lot about Prince Spaghetti, because the Prince mob family who runs the company kills anyone who doesn't eat Prince Spaghetti on Wednesday.
Anthony wound up going to Harvard, where he was a member of the Fox final club. Who could have guessed it back then? (Tom Obrien told this story on TFNN.com last night.)
Anthony would up going to Harvard, where he was a member of the Fox final club. Who could have guessed it back then? (Tom Obrien told this story on TFNN.com last night.)
@chrmoll, i'm 99% sure that image is a woman that was a contestant on a wife swap type of show that aired on ch. 5; fox tv. a few years back.. she was a fat/ strange pain in the a** that moved in with a family that believed in the occult, the family (allegedly) put spells on her on the show, she freaked out as the entire family laughed at her.. true.
This is such a Northeast thing, I believe (maybe it's more widespread). But in the '60s and '70s at the Jersey Shore, it wasn't uncommon for most of the guys in my baseball group to be called home, at various times between 5 and 6:30, by our mothers, sometimes a block or two away, announcing that dinner was ready. Probably not as prevalent now, since kids seem to come home from school and play inside on their computers, watch TV, or text endlessly from the dinner table. I prefer the old days!
I grew up on the Upper West Side when it wasn't a "desirable" place to live. Our parents would let us play outside, unattended, the whole day. Around dinnertime you could hear the mothers in the neighborhood calling the neighborhood kids. Come 6pm you would here, "Anthony!"...."Michael!"... "Jonathan!".. etc... There were no cellphones then and most kids didn't have watches... it was a simpler world. This commercial captured the feeling of the time so well!
i always loved this commercial. hadn't seen it in years. Now that I have, feels like the original Hal Riney spot, except with a little faster vo. I know what I'm having next Wed.
I remember this commercial, and loved it. It brings back so many good memories. I always like to have Pasta on Wednesdays, but my Sician husband insists that Thursdays and Sundays were the real days to eat pasta. We're both from NY, but living in Florida now, nobody knows what I'm talkin' about. LOL. Hey does anyone know the kid in the commercial?
@MYacono Here in New England (Rhode Island anyways), YES, we can still get Prince spaghetti at supermarket. This commerciial is so nostalgic for New Englanders.I thought EVERYONE in the country knew that wednesday was Prince spaghetti day.....but I have learned that it isnt in all parts of the country. Anyways, classic commercial, and awesome spaghetti.
My Mom bought Prince Spaghetti and Sauce and we always ate it on Wednesday. I grew up in NW Indiana and later when I worked in a grocery store in high school, there were a large number of people who would buy that product and eat it on Weds.
I grew up in Illinois and I remember this commercial in the 70's when I was a kid... and my mom would buy Prince pasta! I don't see it here in Northern CA though...
lol this commercial is why I hate spahgetti... my dad told my mom that wednesday was spahegetti night, and she thought it was a family tradition 'cause she never seen this commercial, so now every wednesday, we have it lmfao
lol I lived on the Ct/Mass border. We had Prince and Ronzoni commercials. Guess best of both worlds. Loved the Italian Festival in Boston, killer food sold on the street. I remember Ronzoni commercials sounded like Al Martino or Tony Bennett singing "Ronzoni Life is Good".
This guy comes into my restaurant in Hampton, NH. He sits in the lounge with his friend Paul about twice a week. He's actually downstairs right now. That's pretty funny. Someone just told me a minute ago that he was in this commercial. His real name actually is Tony (Anthony).
Growing up in an Irish/Italian suburb of Boston, there must have been a dozen kids in my high school named Anthony. Poor kids were greeted up and down the halls all day with Annn---thon-eeee!! That's still the way I call to someone named Anthony.
I was JUST telling a story about how I was in the North End with my son "Anthony" during a very crowded St. Anthony's Feast 23 years ago when he was 4 yrs old. He ran away from me in the crowd and in a panic I yelled "Anthony!!". My girlfirend and I STILL talk about how it seemed like EVERYONE stopped what they were doing to see who called their name!! lol!!!
Does anyone know if Prince's spaghetti sales actually increased for Wednesdays? lol!!
does anyone know the actors name? wow, I must have seen this commercial 1,000 times as a kid. my roommate and i were just talking about it --- i thats why i came to youtube and voila! here it is!!
You mean the kid's name? Anthony Martignetti was his real name. He was not an actor just a kid from the North End. He was walking down the street when the producers of the commercial, who were scouting for locations, asked him for directions. They hired him to be in the commercial. He was 12 years old at the time and had been in America for only 3 years. Neat, huh?
chroll, the monster is trying to say that Anthony, 40 years later, still, looks the same, 12. He has not aged one day, has not grown and still runs home for more Prince Shpaget.
Are there any Italians left in the North end of Boston these days?
Or is it a gay, Afroc Caribbean neighborhood now?
Diversity is supposed to be our strength.

Loved this advert.
Loved this time - when urban, crime problems were "Italian", "Catholics" Now we have Al Qaeda flooding in and crashing airplanes into our office buildings.Immigration control - let's make the Italians the worst thing we need to worry about.
This commercial was first shown in 1971, and endlessly repeated over the years, with "updated" tags involving the Prince spaghetti box and slogan [the original tag line was, "Share it with your family."].
He's a court officer in Dedham Mass, Just Google Anthony Martignetti prince spaghetti A few articles on him.

I remember this commercial very well, and I have to laugh every time I see it, the writers didn't put too much thought into the reality of it.
In Boston's Italian North End, someone yelling the name Anthony and only one kid comes running.
It's just like West Side Story, a guy runs through Spanish Harlem yelling for Maria and only one girl answers.
I think it's hilarious.
