Look, to really understand why the war happened my grandpa (who was in vietnam) handed me five books he said he had to read about the vietnam war when he took college twenty or so odd years ago. Very complicated situation.

Many deride the comment by one Marine who said “We had to destroy the city to save it.” but the fact is that after capturing the city, the NVA were steadily killing every government official or “Class Enemy” they could find. My heart goes out to all those Australian and American servicemen, who fought and died side-by-side. Most of these guys didn't fight for the political cause, but fought and died for their brothers next to them, be it white or black, American or foreign, and returned home, to a hateful and ignorant society, further making their lives a living hell. My post was specifically for the Yanks and Aussies, who had to came home, and had no way to deal with their stresses, and spat upon in public, simply because they took part in a conflict that the government wanted to wage, for an extremely stupid political reason.

My Grandfather served as a Lieutenant in the ARVN South Vietnamese Army.
He was trained notably well by the CIA and U.S Military. The only picture I've ever seen him in, was a young man, wearing a hat titled "Saigon Marines". He was promoted at the end of the war for honor for his service; fighting for democracy, he was Killed in Action during the Tet Offensive. When I came to Vietnam as a child, I never visited his grave with my father, now I regret it.

My father was a SFC platoon Seargent in the Korean war. I served with combat units and was highly respected by my NCO's. My duty was to serve my father. The lessons in Vietnam have shaped US policy to finish up a war in ten years or less. This is true for the Middle East where the terrain is ideal for satellite recon. In the tropics, mud is engulfing, rains are torrential, clouds are peristent. The desert is far more hospitable. Not even an AC130 can see through the dense foliage. There is as yet no US technology that can beat that. In the meantime, pungi sticks and guerrilla warfare are still the best defense.

Yes, it was the public whp forced us out of Vietnam, but it was also the constant expenditures we were making that was also a major cause. And if you grew up then and witnessed a majority of people you knew die, then you probably would want them out as well. Once we left, our Vietnamization (training south Vietnamese to fight in our place) was completely crushed after the Tet Offensive, so we just left them to rot.

If it were, how did they rapidly capture Phnom Penh a few years after the Vietnam War and maintain a military presence in Cambodia so long? At the same time, they were engaged with Cambodia they participated in the third Indochina war vs the PRC. How did they pull that off?

Many deride the comment by one Marine who said “We had to destroy the city to save it.” but the fact is that after capturing the city, the NVA were steadily killing every government official or “Class Enemy” they could find. If the Marines hadn’t bludgeoned their way in, goodness knows how many unarmed civilians would have been killed by the NVA and PLF. You don’t see too much mention of that in the press.

My Grandfather served as a Lieutenant in the ARVN South Vietnamese Army.
He was trained notably well by the CIA and U.S Military. The only picture I've ever seen him in, was a young man, wearing a hat titled "Saigon Marines". He was promoted at the end of the war for honor for his service; fighting for democracy, he was Killed in Action during the Tet Offensive. When I came to Vietnam as a child, I never visited his grave with my father, now I regret it.

Serving 3 years regular army infantry with lifers from vietnam in 1981 in the army. I will tell you what. I never met men that could serve such an impression on me. My father was a SFC platoon Seargent in the Korean war. I served with combat units and was highly respected by my NCO's. My duty was to serve my father. Yes, it was the public whp forced us out of Vietnam, but it was also the constant expenditures we were making that was also a major cause. And if you grew up then and witnessed a majority of people you knew die, then you probably would want them out as well. Once we left, our Vietnamization (training south Vietnamese to fight in our place) was completely crushed after the Tet Offensive, so we just left them to rot.
