Movie is completely retarded and a waste of time, if you've seen the trailer, you've seen the whole movie. Nothing else happens, no surprises, nothing. Bad movie.
Um I'm sorry Anna but this movie was WAY too unrealistic. Yes, these things happen individually but they put every negative aspect of a poor kid's life (SOME of them) and made it into one character's life. WTF?
There was not ONE upside to this movie. And as a black person, I'm like why the hell should I love this movie?

As a Black man in America I found this movie deplorable. It is no more than glorifying ghetto ignorance, overeating and illiteracy. To look at this movie as an example of strength is ridiculous. If we wanted a happy ending they should have should her losing weight, getting an education and living on her own. What was the point if all she gained was more weight and a severing of her relationship with her mother.
also, if i'm wrong, sorry. but, in those relationship movies from spike, doesn't the female character "save" the male character in almost every movie? wasn't the theme in crooklyn respect for your mother, to the point of near worship? tell you what. i will revisit tyler perry's and spike lee's work from your point of view, if you try the same from mine. maybe you wouldn't come away with that, cause it blows me away that you did. crooklyn, mo betta blues, miracle at st. anna.
furthermore, racism is a system of inequality, not words or prejudices. some would say it is impossible to be a racist if you're black. being a prejudiced person lends no advantage to blacks. and what people perceived us to be wouldn't matter if there wasn't a institutionalized system to put us at a disadvantage. so this is the frame of mind i come from, you may needed to know that so you can judge properly, if you want to judge.
pick up a copy of dr. cornell west's Black Men Who Mean Business, its a music cd, but track 7 is a 10 min jazz inspired conversation with Dr. Micheal Eric Dyson, and Dr. West. West is for the moritorium of the word. Dr. Dyson doesn't agree. we are not all the same, and shouldn't be forced to identify with the same. my mother (Dr. Bailey) probably would use this word sparingly, not me. who decided that that word would forever piss black people off? are we children? you can't talk about me?

I had to pause and leave this video alone half way (about 5:40) through because it sounded like some spoilers was about to come out of the mouth from the extra guy on the left. Laterz
This is one of things I hate about ignorance, why is it that a movie about black people automatically represents the entire black community, why can't the story just represent the people involved? to be clear I'm not knocking the movie, I'm refering to the response to the movie.
the book was written by a woman but this film was directed by a man. I'm not telling people not to like it. Thats not my intent at all. I love ALL tyler perry movies and i agree with him 100% when he says that child abuse in the black community needs to be discussed. But instead of being proud of surviving the black community why can't we focus on changing it? In the end, all we have is us right? This attempt fell short, thats all i'm trying to say....
Yes they were but in the end how did they help precious change? and how do we know? The film failed to show the positive changes, even in the main character. Anything that was positive was rushed and some of it was completely left out...almost like the director wanted to cut the boring stuff and get back to the physical and sexual abuse. This movie was like gangsta rap for women and not insightful gangsta rap either....i understand now why women don't always want men telling their stories.
black people think a lot of shit is funny. like soul plane. they also love bet. and church. and pork. and shiny trinkets. f that. perry could keep it real, and still be funny, and baby boy makes sense and exhibits a character transformation. spike lee's movies are based on REALITY. not a fictional view on how he sees women. ever notice how spike plays a character not himself?
i'm black, and that is what white folks think of us when they watch "meet the browns" or whatever the hell it is. black people making fun of black people. i don't like it, and i think those are the real niggers. niggers that hate niggas. and think they doing us a favor by making us look like innocent fools.
This movie was fantastic. Well done. Great actors and very realistic. I have to give Mariah Carey a thumbs up. She finally did a great acting job. You actually forget that its her.
The guy who wanted the movie to be subtle does not seem to understand that people that the movie is portraying are are very direct and abrasive. Abusive people do repeatedly reiterate negative things to others.
tyler perry disgust me. man hatin mf. every thing he does is stereotypical nigger buffonery. and that bs is popular because white people only like to see Black as fools, criminals, and athletes. Every show, movie, and play from Tyler Perry sucks. It is really disappointing that this is the type of Black man that gets credit, and not Spike Lee, or John Singleton, or Forrest Whittaker. this bum.
You all disgust me! Don't you feel empathy towards Precious? She didn't ask to get raped. She didn't ask to have children. She didn't ask to have a dysfunctional life. She was very VERY unlucky girl who is trying to be different. Even if she didn't try, I would understand. Living in a messed up life where the father is the sickest human being in the world. I don't care how addicted he was on drugs, YOU NEVER RAPE YOUR CHILDREN! It isn't just a black community problem, it's a HUMAN problem!
I almost threw up when I hear about these problems. As HUMAN BEINGS, we should help eradicated poverty and give ALL children the right of an education.
This hits me hard because of the sick reality of poverty in the black community. It sucks but it's true. It is like that in all communities and we need to fight poverty by inventing new technology, better health care (I'm Canadian and I'm talking about our health care too) and EDUCATION.
Besides, notice that she wants a LIGHT skin boy? Eeek!
Hold up! Its easy to see how sexual abused people will applaud this movie. But after I left the theater tonight, I thought to myself..NO POSITIVE BLACK MEN!! Also, the black mothers were abusive and cussed more than Eddie Murphy in 1984. The movie was ok, but be prepared to see ALOT of stereotypes. Instead of telling one story of an abused young woman, the director tried to put multiple abuse stories into 2 hours. This movie presents one side of our community. Sadly, it ignores EVERYTHING else.
Get suttering muttering Ben away from the camera. God.
"They could have called it called it Push which was the name of the err, uh, um, of the book, of the novel Push by Saphire, but they didn't want to do that because there was another uh novel, uh another book, euhrr, another movie"
When he's not tripping over his own words he's muttering inaudibly. On the rare occasion he's actually understandable he's being obnoxious. He's just about the only thing I hate about TYT.
Yeah, honestly, these films that are really good but really disturbing I don't want to watch anymore. I saw Schindler's list, I saw Boys Don't Cry, and that's enough. I don't need to watch any more of these movies that leave me feel like I've been kicked in the stomach.
I read the book in 9th grade since it was my teacher's favorite book and therefore everyone HAD to read it. I remember reading the part where she was like "yes daddy fuck me, it feels good" and I was thinking my teacher is fucked up. She is. Didn't like the book.
I haven't seen this movie, nor will I want to, but I completly understand what Ana is saying. People who are f*cking assh*les, and have some sob story, about why they're assh*les. No, F*ck Em! There are plenty of people who have been abused, who don't take it out on other people. These people are scumbags who need no sympathy.
Ben always talks to god damn much!! He spent more time spewing out his long winded thoughts than Anna and Cenk combined! And why the hell does he so frequently interrupt Cenk? Know your role Ben! You are seated off to the side for a reason!
You know the world always has been been fucked up and always will be fucked up. The test of how great a country we are, and that goes for any other country as well, is how resilient we are to get through the tough times and to work on digging ourselves out of holes.
Curling up in a ball and wailing "We're doomed!" is for losers and pussies.
And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, And Again, 20,000 spoonfulls of TERROR...oh whoops...nvm...Stupid Fake Trailor...
Why is TVT reviewing this movie? This is blacksloitation of 2009. Lots of depressing books are written and not made into movies. Lots of depressing books about big teens are written and not made into movie. TVT... Don't waste your time with stuff like this. We only needed one "Color Purple."
It's not blaxploitation at all. There's no jive. No chopsaki fight scenes. There's no glitz or campy morality plays. It's a gritty story about triumph of spirit.
We only need one "Color Purple" but it is okay to have many movies over the past decade with the exact same plot line like "Deep Impact" = "Armageddon" = "The After Tomorrow" = "2012"?
I think after nearly 25 years I welcome another movie in the tradition of "The Color Purple."
I haven't even seen the movie, and I'm with the opinionated dood on the left. I think I'd feel the same way after watching it as he does. I feel that way already and I haven't watched it.
this was certainly not the Tyler Perry Movie formula. I'm sure the person who told you that was referring to the similarities in subject matter as it pertains to abuse but aside from that this was totally different. He really didn't have as much say in it bcuz he didnt write the script & was a co producer unlike in his other films where he does everything.
Ofcourse they are. It's just an emotional cookie cutter flick to make the ladies cry while we get to console em and show what sensitive mature guys we are and how much we also hate the mom.
Ben completely would not even have gotten to second base with Ana there.. Leave your honest opinions at the door gents ;D
half of those scenes from the films is from a similar low budget British film where a dad forces his daughter into prostitution and she got raped by social workers and she didn't have fairly tale ending either, I forgot the name of it though.
I can't get through the trailer without crying...I can just imagine the blubbering mess I would be if actually seeing the film....which I plan on doing....when my skin thickens a bit...as of now I think it would just be too much to handle..
hey didnt cenk say his wife was a therapist? where the heck did this social worker stuff come from?? i wonder if he even knows what his wife does.. lol
he's great, and to be honest (although i like him) out of Jay, Anna and Ben i think Cenk is the weak link. but only coz he can go off on a tangent from time to time.
Well, there are many different types of social workers. Common social work in the U.S. is divided into work that deals with adults or children. Adult social work is typically dealing with low income people who are applying for or using social services. Social workers are also assigned to people released from prison or jail -- a probation officer has a degree in social work. A very important part of social work (the most important in my opinion) is child welfare work. A social worker.
Ran out of space -- these kinds of social workers have the unenviable job of dealing with kids of abusive family situations. Sometimes they have to make the HORRIBLE decision as to whether or not to remove a kid from a parent. There are also social workers dealing with juvenile delinquents and troubled youth situations.
most probation officer's have a degree in criminal justice...you can do probation work w/ a SW degree usually...but that's not what "we do"...and yes..we also can specialize in Adult Protective Services..we investigate nursing homes, or get them medical care they need, or sometimes adults are unfortunately mentally ill to the point they can't care for themselves..and if nobody is helping them, SW's have to step in and "declare them incompetent" not done often hard to do, but sometimes only way
it depends on their specialization or where they work, i specialized my degree in Child Protective Services (BSW degree) and worked at a DSS investigating child abuse/neglect reports...but basically we assess family situations, use training to identify problems, get them to the right places to get help for those problems, some SW's get Master Degrees and do therapy (licensed clinical social workers)...some people who "do" SW don't even have a degree in it, but in like child development--
Thanks for clarifying -- I'm by no means a social worker, of course, I gave a layman's definition. Though I believe more probation officers do, indeed, have a degree in criminal justice, they very often are required a social work license as well, no? Also, I believe many people with degrees in social work will also get a degree in human resources because larger companies want their HR directors to have both degrees.
I agree with Anna, it was a difficult movie to watch, but one of the best movies I've seen since "Z". It's in no way a light weight movie. If "in your face" reality flicks are not your thing, go see it with someone who can handle the story line and compare notes afterward. It can be enlightening.
Haha so many ben-bashing posts here.. he's annoying sometimes, but he's alright... every good movie needs a good villain and i think Ben is playing his role really well :-)
gotta say I disapprove of the haterade being poured on Ben here on YT.. He´s not on TYT that often and I like it when he is.. Old school TYT. Keep it like it is :)
The guy to the left needs to shut the fuck up. He's annoying, doesn't add anything but illogical skepticism and is terribly boring to listen to and to watch. Geez.
- I find it ironic that Monique will most likely win an Oscar for playing a messed up character in a movie. Just like most black Oscar winners. ( It's no longer the maid roles that get them those Oscars - it's much worse!) Crackheads, Pregnant teens, Grieving sexual widows, hip hop football player.
I refuse to see this movie- depressing stereotypical negro films need to be layed to rest. Whatever happen to movies like LOVE JONES?
I think it's hilarious that the chick who plays precious grew up in a happy home, I couldn't help but think, so, what's YOUR reason for being that damn fat?
My dad met Monique on the set of a show and said that she's actually a very nice, sweet person. She was one of the few "stars" that went around speaking to regular people on the set.
Look at this old set

I haven't seen this movie, nor will I want to, but I completly understand what Ana is saying. People who are f*cking assh*les, and have some sob story, about why they're assh*les. No, F*ck Em! There are plenty of people who have been abused, who don't take it out on other people. These people are scumbags who need no sympathy.

The whole premise for this movie is just waaaaaaaay too over the top for me. Couldn't throw in that she had cancer, too?

I just came to say something as a critic that wont be politically correct or nice, but I will see if I am alone on it.
Watching any video of Precious makes me sick.
Heavily Obese people are already disgusting when I see folds of fat over the pantwaste, rolling out the short sleeves, the fat neck.
This main girl in the movie looks like she can barely move or talk.
Like a giant sloth.
Seriosly, its so unhealthy and unsurvivable outside of this safe civilisation, thats only part of it, ugh

Im average looking
I was always considered handsome growing up, kept my teenage looks into my 20s
Was luckily born genetically perfect body weight
Lucky especially because half of my family is overweight
Anyway, I knew it would be unpopular for somebody to be disgusted by extremely overweight people
That seems to be one of the points of the movie. That fat isnt bad
But what I have to say on the subject is more then can fit here
At least I would never be anything like Precious mother

Mariah Carey seems to be the kind of actor who can act well, if given a good script.
Give her a bad script, however, she will destroy it.

Dear god I hope Cenk comes back soon.
I hate this new guy in the glasses.
He's a complete asshole.
And why are people's posts on this thread being deleted?
First my post got deleted, then Unekwu89's post got deleted...how many other people's posts on here have been deleted?
It's not like we said anything really offensive to anyone (not that YouTube would care).

How does that title fit on a theatre marquee? Just wondering.

Why is TVT reviewing this movie? This is blacksloitation of 2009. Lots of depressing books are written and not made into movies. Lots of depressing books about big teens are written and not made into movie. TVT... Don't waste your time with stuff like this. We only needed one "Color Purple."
lgreen5 2 years ago
It's not blaxploitation at all. There's no jive. No chopsaki fight scenes. There's no glitz or campy morality plays. It's a gritty story about triumph of spirit.
upabittoolate 2 years ago 2
To be honest, I'm kind of hoping that this movie is better than The Color Purple.
ChelseaHysteria 2 years ago
We only need one "Color Purple" but it is okay to have many movies over the past decade with the exact same plot line like "Deep Impact" = "Armageddon" = "The After Tomorrow" = "2012"?
I think after nearly 25 years I welcome another movie in the tradition of "The Color Purple."

Most people I know who saw the movie thought this could have easily been a Tyler Perry flick so I've been told.
ICEGOD2 2 years ago
this was certainly not the Tyler Perry Movie formula.

Leave your honest opinions at the door gents ;D
megamarsvin 2 years ago
Well the bit about how the mum in this video got her daughter to 'pleasure' her is the exact same scene from that movie I was talking about aswell.
The girl doesn't have a baby but she has a miscarriage from her stepdad, though I see what your saying.
Though some of the scenes from precious sound exactly the same as that one. I'm gonna have to find the name of it now.
levantos 2 years ago
@mopsius stop trolling and go somewhere else
JuanLMFAO 2 years ago
half of those scenes from the films is from a similar low budget British film where a dad forces his daughter into prostitution and she got raped by social workers and she didn't have fairly tale ending either, I forgot the name of it though.

1- i read the novel, and i didn't know what it was by the title "precious" alone. there are far worse movie titles.
2- molestation happens to people all across the board - not just the poor
3- if they thought the movie was rough i would not suggest the book

What the heck does a social worker do?
Chimera1591 2 years ago
Are you really asking that or is it a joke?
billyshake 2 years ago
As serious as the night is dark. My friend's girlfriend wants to be one.
Chimera1591 2 years ago
Well, there are many different types of social workers. Common social work in the U.S. is divided into work that deals with adults or children. Adult social work is typically dealing with low income people who are applying for or using social services. Social workers are also assigned to people released from prison or jail -- a probation officer has a degree in social work. A very important part of social work (the most important in my opinion) is child welfare work. A social worker.
billyshake 2 years ago
Ran out of space -- these kinds of social workers have the unenviable job of dealing with kids of abusive family situations. Sometimes they have to make the HORRIBLE decision as to whether or not to remove a kid from a parent. There are also social workers dealing with juvenile delinquents and troubled youth situations.
billyshake 2 years ago
most probation officer's have a degree in criminal justice...you can do probation work w/ a SW degree usually...but that's not what "we do"...and yes..we also can specialize in Adult Protective Services..we investigate nursing homes, or get them medical care they need, or sometimes adults are unfortunately mentally ill to the point they can't care for themselves..and if nobody is helping them, SW's have to step in and "declare them incompetent" not done often hard to do, but sometimes only way
blythebrooks 2 years ago
it depends on their specialization or where they work, i specialized my degree in Child Protective Services (BSW degree) and worked at a DSS investigating child abuse/neglect reports...but basically we assess family situations, use training to identify problems, get them to the right places to get help for those problems, some SW's get Master Degrees and do therapy (licensed clinical social workers)...some people who "do" SW don't even have a degree in it, but in like child development--
blythebrooks 2 years ago
Thanks for clarifying -- I'm by no means a social worker, of course, I gave a layman's definition. Though I believe more probation officers do, indeed, have a degree in criminal justice, they very often are required a social work license as well, no? Also, I believe many people with degrees in social work will also get a degree in human resources because larger companies want their HR directors to have both degrees.

Good commentary by Ben, Ana, Cenk. I might have to go see this flick now, after this and the NPR report about it that I heard earlier. Good stuff.
EricMetalGuitarist 2 years ago
I agree with Anna, it was a difficult movie to watch, but one of the best movies I've seen since "Z". It's in no way a light weight movie. If "in your face" reality flicks are not your thing, go see it with someone who can handle the story line and compare notes afterward. It can be enlightening.

-I hate the title of the movie too.

The majority of African-Americans today are normal middle-class people, and don't often get themselves pregnant out of wedlock.
Hollywood needs to grow up.
And what's with this stupid new Hollywood trend about middle-class women and girls getting themselves knocked-up out of wedlock?
And With the execption of Juno, none of them ever give it up for adoption (let alone even CONSIDER having an abortion).
That is complelty unrealistic.
There seem to be a lot of woman-haters in Hollywood.
