Douglas Fairbanks was the first sword hero on celluloid.
Errol Flynn popularized the Swashbuckler, Basil Rathbone the BEST actor swords man on film, that is why he was always chosen to be the bad guy, to make the leading man look good. That is what theatre training does for an actor.
Johnny Depp..... To play the Lone Ranger in the new 2012 movie?
Johnny Depp is the one person who I think could actually capture the essence of Errol Flynn. I was really disappointed that he didn't use the "Flynn" model in his pirates movies. If he ever decided to do a straight pirate movie (no Keith Richards) ,where he is the hero (with all his teeth) getting the girl for honorable reasons, I'll be the first one in line. But, then, again, why should Johnny stand behind me?
Yep...no question about it...Errol Flynn rocked. I read his bio "My Wicked, Wicked Ways". What a life he led! I highly recommend this book to you if you want to learn more about Flynn. Captain Blood is by far the best pirate movie ever made...may favorite for sure. No one could ever top him either in "The Adventures of Robinhood"..not even Russell Crowe. Let's face it...they just don't make Errol Flynns anymore..there will never be another like him!
@Eddiesix Errol's book should be read with a generous amount of skepticism. He did lead quite a life, but at the time when he co-wrote his bio, he was very short of funds, sobriety and memory. A best-selling book would, at least, solve one of those problems.
Flynn traveled all over the world at an early age coming from Tasmania. The bravado he showed was so genuine I believe he truly was a man of a roguish nature which the camera picked up so clearly. No Johnny Depp can match this persona because Flynn was merely playing himself. He was never known to back down from a brawl or a challenge in a nightclub or bar. When challenged he merely waded in.
There will never be another Errol Flynn, unfortunately. Even Jack Warner tried to find one when Flynn was starting to decline as an actor, but came out empty-handed. Men like Errol Flynn, only come out once a lifetime.

Rathbone hatted buckling with Flynn as he considered Fynn technique very dangerous and unprofessional, it's still a good battle though.

the sword fighting in 3 musketeers-richard lester version was more real-they got tired -slashed and chopped-no fancy footwork-just fought

Before kung fu movies' popularity in the US and Jackie Chan stunts...there was swashbuckling movies! Great stuff!

It is not just a man or a movie, it is a sense of life and living.

Errol Flynn "The Swashbuckler King", is the greatest on screen pirate ever. No one can beat Errol Flynn as the pick of the pirates.

Errol Flynn was to the swashbuckling hero what John Wayne was to the western gunfighter.

That's a truly great line:
"You'll not take her while I live!"
"Then I'll take her when you're dead!"
Classic duelist dialogue.

Flynn was a fantastic swashbuckler , no comparison with the ones who try today to be similar him. There`s only on Capt Blood and that`s ERROL FLYNN.
