At that time donkey kong was the reference to compare the graphics and sound capabilities of the home consoles and home computers (this is how you called them back then) at that time.
And donkey kong on colecovision was the best of all version on atari, intellivision, apple II, commodore 64 etc...
The levels are out of order, but that isn't what bothers me. What bothers me is that the levels all short. There are girders missing in the first screen and the rivit screen (it being only 3 stories high)
@ClassicTVMan1981X The NES version manages it. I do agree that DK arcade used a vertical monitor, but it is still doable. If I am not mistaken, the adam version is right.
Actually, the Atari/Coleco/Nintendo fiasco dates to the summer of 1983. Coleco had an early version of this particular title to plug the Adam computer. It was a cartridge format game, said to not have violated the Atari/Nintendo licensing agreement.
But this title is actually HTF because of the video game crash of 1983, not because of the Atari/Nintendo pact.
Actually what you said is a misnomer. Atari thought early on that the Adam was a real computer, but it was actually just another add-on to the ColecoVision console.
Actually, that's not entirely true. There was an ADAM add on for Colecovision but there was also a standalone Adam that didn't require you to own a Colecovision to use. The system that Atari saw at the game show that killed the Nintendo deal was the standalone Adam.
Yeah, should have seen one like that already. BTW, Nintendo replaced "How high can you get" with "How high can you climb" after it was pointed out to them that kids would take it as a drug reference.
I used to play DK pretty good and there is one secret in the first level of the game.
When you climb the first flor ,you need one short strike on the joystick to move the Mario,a little bit, to the right (he must look to the left) and than branch backward to the right !
No I mean when you climb up any ladder Mario will climb faster if you push up quickly twice on the Original Colecovision version that came with the system. I did not know you could climb up the broken ladder, I'll try that next time I'm at may parents house where my Colecovision is.
Donkey Kong Hopped the wrong direction in the intro screen and they still have the upper level hammer in the wrong place on the ramps / girders board.
Does it still have that annoying bug where you have to push up twice quickly to get Mario to climb faster?
Dude how come you did not do the super jump on the elevators board?
I think what you mean on one of these aspects is, does this version still have the bug that allows Mario to finish the 1st level quickly by climbing up the first broken ladder and back down, and then going back a little and jumping rightward?
Throughout all this gameplay it seems as though you've probably lost only one Mario, as I see you have five lives in reserve when you did the Pie Factory board.
Coleco was supposed to have released their Super Game Module, which was to use "wafers" (and later, laserdiscs) as its source of media. It had been demoed for several months in 1983 before Coleco decided to replace it with the Adam computer system. The Super Game module, if it had been released instead of the Adam, was to have been packaged with both Super DK (this game) and Super Gorf.
I'm thinking of doing a video of a complete game on skill level 4. Also, the first 3 levels of Adam DK are the same as the arcade, then it repeats L3.
This is coleco's best version. I have the coleco library emulator on my xbox but this version of DK is not included. Wish it was.

@christo930
That's attributed to the arcade's vertical resolution, and home TV resolution is horizontal.

Haha, I finally got this game on DDP. It rarely ever pops up, but I radomly decided to type Super DK into eBay, and sure enough it came up.

How "high" can you get? lol

This game is hard to come by since Coleco was forced to discontinue any sales of it since Atari owned all rights to port DK on any "computer".
I think Coleco had something against putting Donkey Kong on the correct side of the screen.

I am curious if someone else know this trick ...

By FAR the best version of Kong other than the original arcade version with the infamous Kill Screen.
CampBreezyBeach 2 years ago
Which reminds me, how long did it take you to get to the "kill screen" on the ColecoVision version?

You know you've got a good port of Donkey Kong when it includes the pie factory level. :)

Of course you can tap the stick twice when Mario goes up or down a ladder and he will climb it up or down faster.

Definately a step up from the standard colecovision port, but still inferior to the awesome Atari 8-bit version which is on a cart.

Probably so as on the girder levels, no fireballs come out from the blue barrels that enter the oil drum.

Hi Ed, could you please do a full-run through of this version of DK, with the levels flowing freely through w/o edits?
L2 = girders, elevators, rivets (skill 2)
L3 = girders, factory, elevators, rivets (skill 3)
L4 = girders, factory, girders, elevators, rivets
L5 = girders, factory, girders, elevators, girders, rivets (skill 4)

Levels for Adam DK
L1 = girders, rivets
L2 = girders, elevators, rivets
L3 = girders, factory, elevators, rivets
L4+ = same as L3
ed1269 3 years ago
Oh, and on DK Jr., the arcade DK Jr. levels are as follows:
L1 = vines, chains
L2 = vines, springboard, chains
L3 = vines, hideout, chains
L4 = vines, springboard, hideout, chains
L5+ = same as L4
Let me know if the Adam version goes straight from L2 to L4.
ClassicTVFan82 3 years ago
Levels for Adam DK Jr
L1= vines, chains
L2= vines, springboard, chains
L3= vines, chains, hideout
then keep repeating L1, L2, L3 sequence
