It's been totally cloudy and there has hardly been any totally clear blue sky days. my flight from heathrow to toronto was cloudy nearly all the way which destroyed and chance of nice views. From now on in the future i am only planning flying holidays on blue sky conditions otherwise it just sucks
i have started to learn that flyiing is a case of not really seeing anything in detail when at cruise altitude and especially when its a cloudy day. The best flights i have had is when it is totally clear not a cloud in the sky. even though some people still regard this as not seeing anything you still see what the ground looks like from high altitude and it is a beautiful sight. I often think it would be great to be able to decend to very low altitude in flight to see some of the scenery

It is unusual however for the engines to throttle up, cruise climb normally throttles them down slightly, and you'd prefer the highest power setting to be used in the initial take off roll so that any faults are more likely to happen on the ground.
in some ways the long day flights over the north atlantic feel like a trip away from earth. you may still be in the earths atmosphere but you're not on ground anymore. so in effect i see it as a different enviroment. for me its like temporarily leaving the earth then returning

Off topic but I was watching war of the worlds the other day. I always thought the sound of the laser warming up sounded exactly like the 777's GE engine when it's spooling up :P
I flew twice on the 777. I love these take offs showing the inlet and condensation. I did some calculations on the GE90 engines for fan shaft power. I referenced an ihi.co.jp pdf paper on line. Speaking of the -94 and -115 versions respectively, the fans turn at 2850 and 2550 RPM, of diameters 123 and 128 inches, with fan shaft torque of 225,000 and 293,500 ft lb, and power level of 122,000 and 142,480 horsepower (includes LP compressor). The fan shaft is maraging steel of 55 Rc hardness!
@springhill1958 Thanks for the info. I always wondered about the fan shaft torque of the -115B. 293,500 ft-lb at 2550 rpm is just crazy. If you built a piston engine that could deliver that much torque, it would hardly be able to do 100 rpm. Anything faster and it would fly apart, not to mention it would have to be about 5 times larger and 10 times heavier than the GE90. Jet engines are just unbelievably powerful. They make reciprocating engines look like a joke.
As the plane takes off, the engine makes a D flat below middle C, and the harmonic F two octaves and major 3rd above that. These engines literally sing :)

The GE90 is the most powerful engine on a passenger plane yes I would agree with prairiegirl on that because I have flown in a Boeing 777 many times. For cargo planes the TF39 and PW200 are the most powerful engines. They are use on the US Air Force Cargo planes like the C-5 Galaxy and the C-17 Globemaster III but for a propeller planes the AE2100 would be the most powerful. They are use on the C-130J Hercules which is indeed the best cargo propeller plane ever made.
@SirKamiloPL nope! the Boeing 747-8 and the 787 use the same engine model, i think there's a tiny difference in thrust rates.. but they both use GEnx engines.. the 777 uses GE90 engines.. the B777-300ER uses GE90-115B engines.. which are waaay more powerful than the GEnx engines used by the 787 and the 747-8.. but both engine models look very similar, that's because the GEnx technology was derived from the GE90 technology.. but still, the GE90-115B remains unbeaten as most powerful engine

@praetorian2150 You only need full throttle depending on how heavy you are. If your pretty light, the pilots won't need full throttle. There are many other reasons why :) I work for Boeing :)
@jetengine7 It depends on how heavy the aircraft is. If you were a pilot and understood how the FMC works, the computer is given specific thrust settings based on how heavy the aircraft is. Also to save the life of the engines and to reduce noise since people that live by normal airports file complaints to the FAA and the airport :) I hope this helps

nice big lazy engine with alot of reserved power that will never likely get used to its absolute max limits. the reduced power takeoff always feels quite lazy and like it isnt even trying. I like it when they use the max thrust setting for takeoff rather than the reduced takeoff setting. i'm sure you have noticed the difference on takeoff when they use reduced takeoff thrust. I definitely did. THe difference is amazing.
It does have a purphouse. It extends the engine components life and reduces wear and tear and saves on fuel and noise. there's no point using max power on takeoff if you don't need it for the weight and other factors
@tubeyouviewer1984 I know what you mean. That's why I always liked 727s. They were so overpowered, takeoff thrust would sink you into the seat and pin your head to the back of the chair.
@Da40cal GEnx engines are used on the 787 (x2) and 747-8 (x4), they're less powerful than a GE90 engine (like the one showing on this video's airplane). GEnx engines are similar (in thrust rate) to the CF6 engines used on Boeing 767s and 747-400s, the main difference is that GEnx engines are a lot quieter and more fuel-efficient

did the pilots really takeoff at ~90-95% power and then go to 100 near the end of the video? Or did the higher rpm occur abruptly due to lower air pressure?

@rcpilot13, Not really, if actually sat in 777-300ER, in front in the engine then they will be really noisy, trust me I have been on a 777-300ER.

@praetorian2150 You only need full throttle depending on how heavy you are. If your pretty light, the pilots won't need full throttle. There are many other reasons why :) I work for Boeing :)

Sounds as if the climb thrust setting that starts @ 1:10 is higher than takeoff thrust.

@jetengine7 It depends on how heavy the aircraft is. If you were a pilot and understood how the FMC works, the computer is given specific thrust settings based on how heavy the aircraft is. Also to save the life of the engines and to reduce noise since people that live by normal airports file complaints to the FAA and the airport :) I hope this helps

@FlightSimGuy9782 Oh, I know that they don't need full power because they're probably light and to reduce noise, but it just bothers me because the passengers don't get to hear or experience the full power performance of the engines. Oh well, at least most takeoffs are full power. Thanks for the info anyways.

nice big lazy engine with alot of reserved power that will never likely get used to its absolute max limits. the reduced power takeoff always feels quite lazy and like it isnt even trying. I like it when they use the max thrust setting for takeoff rather than the reduced takeoff setting. i'm sure you have noticed the difference on takeoff when they use reduced takeoff thrust. I definitely did. THe difference is amazing.

It does have a purphouse. It extends the engine components life and reduces wear and tear and saves on fuel and noise. there's no point using max power on takeoff if you don't need it for the weight and other factors

Engine hum does sound different from the GE90s on the 777-200 series. Ive never heard it hum so low at N1 speeds actually.

@Da40cal GEnx engines are used on the 787 (x2) and 747-8 (x4), they're less powerful than a GE90 engine (like the one showing on this video's airplane). GEnx engines are similar (in thrust rate) to the CF6 engines used on Boeing 767s and 747-400s, the main difference is that GEnx engines are a lot quieter and more fuel-efficient
