It's a recreation of the plans for assassinating Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky. It shows Stalin's agent buying the ice pick used to kill him. I think "the war with yourselves" refers to the split in the international Communist movement between Stalinists and Trotskyists (or between the grave-diggers of the revolution and the Leninists, but I'm biased :-) ) For a more detailed version, see the movie The Assassination of Trotsky (on imdb): it gets into the psychological motivation of the assassin.
