actually the UK had to lease Hong Kong for only 99yrs. If the UK kept Hong Kong past 1997, it more than likely could've created war with China. The UK had to handover everything (including the famous Victoria Harbor/ Harbour to the New Territories)... and the world would most likely side with the UK with China being all alone

I remember back in 1997, a British friend of mine asked me "will China take all the money away from HK?" Now, it's HK "begging" the Chinese government for money (in the form of investments, tourists etc). Straight after SARS, China popped up the HK retail sectors by allowing Mainland tourists into HK individually (previously it was a lot harder)
UK rule was great for HK, but as China rises as a global power, HK probably wants to be part of it (at least economically).

The income derived from Hong Kong comprises nearly 30% of the total income of the British government. In no way will the British let go of Hong Kong. If it were not for China, Hong Kong will still be under British control and not an independent nation.

Ooilei, HK never really belonged to the British and it never will. The British got HK as a result of the Opium War. Yes, the British were drug pushers and when China resisted, she was attacked by the British. China lost the war and ceded HK to the British for 99 years. It had been 150 before the British were forced to return HK. Pls. study your history.

If you studied history then surely you wouldn't have such a biased view? The Opium Wars were about much more than opium, and legally and as a matter of fact Hong Kong was British since the Treaty of Nanking.

well, if you studied history, you'll learn that the Treaty of Nanjing ended the first Opium War. Yes, the Opium War was much more than opium. It was British Imperialism at it's best. Getting territory and interests with the use of force. Too bad those days are over. Pax Britanica is dead and will never come back again.

I agree, HK is one of the greatest cities of the world being able to be independant. Fortunately, HK still independant until 2046, unless HK people say the independance or the autonomy whitch it could be a good deal.

I am from Hong Kong myself, but I dont agree with you. I think it is good that Hong Kong is sticking with China, Dont fight with me yet, think about it, Can Hong Kong survive without the water and food supply from China? If Hong Kong is independent from China, China will soon build more forts in Canton in order to replace Hong Kong, and by doing this, Hong Kong will lose it's competiveness in transporting good. Not to mention that getting independent will raise a lot of other problems
