I've had luck with acrylic paint (craft paint), at least on faux leathers like naugahyde or vinyl. DON'T use oil-based paints like enamels as they never really dry. Draw your design on first with a fine-point paint marker in white or some other light color, then it's just a matter of filling in the lines like in a coloring book.
would acrylic work well at all? that's what i'm used to painting with, but i've never tried to paint on leather. i know it does well on cotton, but with leather i'm just really not sure
do i have to use tha stencil before i paint?

silk screen paint works the best, because its made for every kind of material. you can find it at art stores, and possibly craft stores.
