I'm not here to argue but I thought facts are important when one documents information on a giant like Um Kalthoum. You can do a search on any reputable site and it will show you she sang the song in a live concert the in 1965. She sang it again in many subsequent concerts of course. Wikipedia has a substantial article on Um Kalthoum and all of her songs if you want to check it out.
@scalchas I'm not here either to argue... it's 1968 for sure... she start singing outside Egypt after the 1967 war to collect money to defence Egypt... she went to Paris, Kuwait, Abodhabi, Tonis and Moroco all AFTER 1967

I'm sure this man attended a 1968 concert in which Um Kalthoum sang this song but have you thought about the fact that she performed the same song in numerous concerts after 1965? Whenever she had a concert, she would sing more than one song you know. Have you checked Wikipedia? They listed her songs and the year in which each one was performed. Besides, There are numerous websites in which they documented 1965 as the year for this song.. I'm just saying...
@scalchas That man was talking about this concert in Tunis in which she sang few of her songs "Alatlal Inta-Omri Baed Anak...etc."
you are right what's written in Wikpiedia is the year she sang the song for the 1st time and here she is singing for the 3rd or fourth time

What an intoxicating song. Hard to believe she sang this song 46 years ago, but it sounds like a modern song . She defined and immortalized Arabic music but also sat the standards for excellence. If you download all the songs she sang in her 50 years career, it would be a 28 hours tape. When Maria Callas sang with 5 octaves, she was the miracle of Europe in the 20th, century. Un Kalthoum mastered 9 octaves. She was the miracle of the world. What a voice.
It was by an accident they discovered that she sang with 9 octaves when in the midst of one of her concerts the microphones broke. Electrical engineers concluded that the Microphone has to be positioned at least 40 inches from her mouth. She also had 14,000 vibrations per second in her voice when the most advanced recording equipments couldn’t record anything that has more than 10,000. This song is 46 years old. A real majestic voice.
We're treated to this song not only with Um Kalthoum's voice, but with Muhammad Abduh Saleh, the king of all "Qanoun" players. What a song and what an orchestra. Gone are the days when those Giants enriched our souls.

Totally understandable. Um kalthoum transcended cultures, languages, nations. I had the fortune of listening to her concerts live on the radio when I was a child in the 60’s and the 70’s and as I was mesmerized by her voice. Her music career spanned more than half a century and will continue to transfix us for centuries to come.
I've been into Oum Kalthoum for about 20 years. I'm not from an Arab country, neither was a brought up in one, didn't even visit one until I was 27. I discovered her completely by accident in England and was transfixed from the start. For me, it's like a secret world and difficult to introduce other people to. So... I don't bother and keep her for myself!
Hello sunshinemephisto, I am middle eastern and with the current mentality in this world, she is not the only thing people are forced to keep to themselves. Ignorance and lack of knowledge and education has made this world a prison that most dont even know they live in. Most dont even know the depth of what you said. Im sure you understand what Im saying.
I heard this song for the first time 40 years ago. And it still touches my heart and soul. Though I cannot understand the words the meaning is understoood.
when i am feeling nostalgic or in a down mood, i come and listen to this song, night after night. she hits the spot. yekhreb 3a2lik ya oum kalsoum *sigh*
And no matter how much the separation confuses me No fire of love will change me Nor will the days make me far... From you Remember me in a beautiful moment We lived in it for love May that song remind you of me The day we heart it dogether Take my years Take all of them Except for the seconds in which I see you Desire, ah desire and its agents Oh how I hide it... oh how I say itI worry for you and I'm afraid you'll forget me
That which is between desire and desperation That which is between fear and its illusions I worry for you and I'm afraid you'll forget me And the desire for you will forever wake me Desire conquered me And the sleepless nights melted me And no matter how much the desire keeps me up
Oum Kalthoum - Far From You I've forgetten sleep and its dreams I've forgetten its nights and its days Far from you my life is torture Don't go far from me I have nothing but teardrops With my I live far from you Desire conquered me And the sleepless nights melted me And no matter how much the desire keeps me up And no matter how much the separation confuses me No fire of love will change me Nor will the days make me far... From you
I've forgotten what it's like to sleep and dream And can't tell night from day When u're far away from me, my life is torture With no companion but my tears Longing for u has won the battle & test of endurance Nights alone without u have burned out life's candles But no matter how sleepless & wasted I live without u And no matter how arduous the nights become thinking of u The fires of my love are dauntless and won't ever be extinguished --- found it somewhere
With humbleness, I thank you for liking the translation. Look for Adilzahrani's and the Oudproff's of our Great One's Baeed Annak. They were written in the right-hand margin the last time I looked. But if you need the original, please let me know and I'll send you the full translation or just post it here,
In all fairness & if copyright laws are to be honored as much for a translator as they are for the writer, however awkward the translation maybe, credit goes to (ruhiaini, chattykathy, chitchatkathy & xchattykathy) respectively. All personas & user names were used by the same writer @ different times for a variety of reasons.
Quite a while back, these translations were gifted to the Oudproff & Adilzahrani to use in their renditions of Baeed Annak. Thanks very much for not claiming them as yours.
I am an American but I love the music and her voice, unfortunately i cant experience the apparent beauty of the lyrics that so many mention because i cant understand arabic. I wish I knew what the audience was reacting to when they yell and whistle after certain lines. where can i find accurate translations and lists of songs? or can someone on here fluent in both teach me some arabic? ha.
oum kalthoum si the most overrated human ever , her voice is great butthe way she uses it is so boring and bad , she dose nto knwo hwo to use it besides peopel give her the music she dose not do anythign epxect may be write a few ,
That's it! I HAVE to go to Egypt. I don't understand more than about 20 words in arabic but I understand her feeling and her passion and the depth of her musicality. She shows us that in one voice, there is a world. And that voice can change the world around it. How many broken hearts has she healed? How many dead ones has she awakened? We'll never know. thank you Egypt for this gift to the world!
Can anyone help me? I'm looking for this song from Oum Kalthoum with these lyrics in it. : Watoe wanes bie, yaa habibi yalah. It's probably completely wrong but this is all I know of the song. That's all I know, I hope someone can help me.
Hi MizzzzH, r u sure its oum kalthoum? i think ur referring 2 another singer similar to her called Wardah and the song is called Batwannis Bik... but, i might be wrong! good luck!
I've no idea if Robert is Arabic, but none of us Arabs thought of her as Grandma, just a diva, a goddess &the eternal woman whose culture, music, songs had no other home but in her soul. She really is larger than life itself, bigger than the highest mountain, wider thanthe oceans. I'm not exaggerating when I say she's the spring of life eternal. The souls of millions of us without her voice & how she enriched our lives would've been as empty as a dead man's body, a shell. I've been to funerals.LOL
I cannot understand what she is saying, but I can feel the longing, emotion, something she longs for...it is remarkable, it is an awesome voice that proves music knows no boundaries. One doesn't always need to understand a language to hear or somehow feel what she is singing...Her voice is breathtakingly awesome...as well as the depth of her ability to express feeling.
Yes! She is my favorite artist these days and I don't understand a word of Arabic. That's a testament to her phenomenal powers of communication and her musicality that remains unmatched by any contemporary artist.
Just listen to her sing and you feel all the emotion. The Goddess of all singers ever. The trumpets of the angels even stop playing to listen. I am humbled by this voice.
Baed Annak, thank you very much very very nice song and singer the star of the middleast OM KalthouM (in Turkish Ummu Gulsum) aahh layalel hobb... selam min TurK (*
Can you feel her pain, sorrow, and compasion just transcend from her voice right into your heart and soul? These are carefully scripted lyrics to really compliment these feelings. What a great artist, I plan to visit your grave when I fly to Egypt Um Kalthoum....
Realmente increible.
Thanks so much for the message. You'll find the entire translation which I did before closing my "ruhiaini" account on oudproff's video (Om Kalthoum Song on OUD.) I also gave the same version to Adilzarahi which he used in his own rendition of Baed Annak.
I'm honored and flattered that you liked it & if you want the revised version, I'll be happy to forward it to you.
to arabiancat..great of u,i alwayse admire and like to see other people who also get emotional by oum kaltoums songs, like that i beleave that i am not the only one who get emotionel by her wonderful songs..

Ignorance and lack of knowledge and education has made this world a prison that most dont even know they live in. Most dont even know the depth of what you said. Im sure you understand what Im saying.

Oum kalthoum has a great voice , but she is VERY overrated . Alot of people are way too fanatic about her . Very simple music and lyrics

I can see how someone might feel that way, if they had no ears and no heart.

Why do you deprive me of it
My eyes were making me jealous of my love
And now they cry for you because of my defeat
When are you oh light of my eye?
Oh soul of my heart, where are you?
End of the translation XD

No sleep nor tears in my eyes
The separation is over for me
I've forgetten sleep and its dreams
I've forgetten its nights and its days
That which is between desire and desperation That which is between fear and its illusions I worry for you and I'm afraid you'll forget me And the desire for you will forever wake me Desire conquered me And the sleepless nights melted me And no matter how much the desire keeps me up

skyInHeritor,
With humbleness, I thank you for liking the translation. Look for Adilzahrani's and the Oudproff's of our Great One's Baeed Annak. They were written in the right-hand margin the last time I looked. But if you need the original, please let me know and I'll send you the full translation or just post it here,
Kathy

meedo911 2 years ago

I wish I knew what the audience was reacting to when they yell and whistle after certain lines. where can i find accurate translations and lists of songs? or can someone on here fluent in both teach me some arabic? ha.

Sorry Robert,
I think you are soooo in love with the granmam,
This Old Lady is really the best arabic singer we ever heard.
louloubeb 3 years ago
I've no idea if Robert is Arabic, but none of us Arabs thought of her as Grandma, just a diva, a goddess &the eternal woman whose culture, music, songs had no other home but in her soul. She really is larger than life itself, bigger than the highest mountain, wider thanthe oceans. I'm not exaggerating when I say she's the spring of life eternal. The souls of millions of us without her voice & how she enriched our lives would've been as empty as a dead man's body, a shell. I've been to funerals.LOL
chitchatkathy 3 years ago
I cannot understand what she is saying, but I can feel the longing, emotion, something she longs for...it is remarkable, it is an awesome voice that proves music knows no boundaries. One doesn't always need to understand a language to hear or somehow feel what she is singing...Her voice is breathtakingly awesome...as well as the depth of her ability to express feeling.
colleenlaraya 3 years ago 3
Yes! She is my favorite artist these days and I don't understand a word of Arabic. That's a testament to her phenomenal powers of communication and her musicality that remains unmatched by any contemporary artist.
She is a phenomenon!

I've forgotten what it's like to sleep & dream
& can't tell night from day.
When you're far away from me,life is unbearable, alone with no companion but my tears.
The pain of longing won the battle against my endurance.
My nights alone without you burned out life's candles,
but no matter how useless yearning leaves me
& no matter how arduous my nights are,
the fires of my love are dauntless and won't be extinguished,
nor will the days alone without you, ever
Keep me away from loving you.

Thanks again!!!
