A truly amazing film. Hedwig is the sort of cussing, drinking anti-hero that you can't help but love and I've found myself in surprisingly similar positions in my life. Full of emotion but not a downer. A rock opera that anyone who's even the slightest bit queer can really "get."
It took me forever to discover this perfect gem... thank god for insomnia: I channel surfed to Logo in the middle of the night and was just blown away. Talent like this is such a gift to the world!
He's back to where he started (where anyone starts)- naked, alone, and trying to find himself, without wearing the costumes expected of him by anyone else (or putting on new ones to try to make them happy).
Back to where he was the last time he was shown buckass, before he was tempted by the stranger's candy... the last time he was "innocent."
I watch this move at least twice a year because i love it so much!.....funny thing is when i first saw it,the memory that came was unexpected,i was 7 years old when the berlin wall was torn down and watching part of it in this move brought it all back.how much you forget till something triggers a memory that you had no idea you had forgotten
When I first saw this movie on Netflix I decided to watch it, but I honestly wasn't expecting much, boy was I wrong! This is one of the best movies, great acting, some of the best songs and really great messages. All around awesome!
John Cameron Mitchell came to my college yesterday and showed this on 35mm print. It was amazing and he's quite the comedian and conversationalist. This is my favorite song from this film...
@newmoondrksky I had the pleasure of spending time in his company a few years ago at the afterparty for 'Shortbus' - he's a really wonderful guy, it was a really wonderful night.
I love this director. I already was shocked by Shortbus, but this film is one of my favourites ever. Great music, great storytelling and very outstanding characters. I love independent cinema because there's "no censure" and there's free creation; I put on some make up...
I love the "Sing-Along" part of this because if you look at the lower left-hand corner of the window you can see "Shlotko" laughing making "Hedwig" laugh wich causes "Skszp" to watch them laughing followed by the upper part of the window giving a little giggle. And, just a question...where did the baby come from??
@bittersweetsunrise I agree with you on this... He was freaking amazing...... I was shocked when i watched this the first time..... I would highly recommend this movie to everyone...... Even those closed minded pricks!!!!!!

The bass drum head reads Hedwig instead of Ludwig. I also love the "where you going with my wig" look Hedwig shoots Yitzhak at 3:20.

I bought Shortbus just because I saw Hedwig and adored it.
Shortbus is definitely not the sort of movie I typically watch, but I love John Cameron Mitchell's style of unconventional movies.
I love that he makes movies that are so different, but it's clear that it's not for the shock factor.

One of the most underrated--in my opinion--films of all time. Mitchell should've won best actor for the Academy, not just the Cannes.
Because this film is a masterpiece, through and through.
