Esther's sponsor, The United States Brewers Foundation, tried to burnish "respectable" images for serving beer in their magazine ads during the previous fifteen years {"Beer Belongs- Enjoy It!"}. For this TV "intermission", they got Irene Dunne, the very image of "chic" and "glamour", to endorse the idea of offering beer at the finest parties and "informal occasions" (even though SHE never touched the stuff).
I totally agree. Wouldn't it be awesome to have attended? Of course, when we do the math, that was 51 years ago. I wouldn't be around today.
As Rena1934 mentions below, this was filmed at Irene's home in the exclusive Holmby Hills neighborhood of LA. Unfortunately, the house has since been torn down as the land is so valuable.
Any party that Miss Irene hosted, I would have gladly attended. She is one of my all time favorites. However, I don't think that she was a beer gal. Always thought of her as a Champagne gal. Drinking -- according to Jackie Gleason, one morning his pal Jack Haley (a devout Catholic and tea-toddler) was leading Jackie into the church when they came upon Miss Dunne and Loretta Young (both devout Catholics)..they took one look at Jackie going into church, turned and left.
haha the funny thing is that Irene didn't like beer in real life haha =) This commercial was actually filmed at her house, aww, it's lovely, she looks divine!
I don't like beer either but if she invited me, I'd probably get drunk =D
My kind of girl! I'm glad she uses a glass, instead of just chuggin' the brewsky out of the bottle like Ma does! In all seriousness, Miss Dunne was a very classy and talented lady.
OMG! the next time you're entertaining, you invite BEER!!! Thanks for the tip, Irene.
I told my friend who sent this to me it would've been much more interesting if Dunne invited some of her contemporaries- "ladies" of the 30's, over for a beer.
Imagine Dunne with Constance Bennett, Ann Harding and whoever else, kicking back and having a few brews...
Yes indeed! Invite beer! No wonder why i like this lady so much! It's the American thing to do at an outdoor party. "Sam the maltster" would be proud (Samuel Adams that is)
This is soo cool. I love these old commercials. It makes me long to be in that time. Nice how she acted like beer was champagne. I don't have time to put mine in a glass. I usually gulp mine lol.
What in the world? She also promoted cigarettes too I suppose. Wow has the world changed.

Okay: official obsession. Didn't they know how to sell in the Capra era? Take us back to the "it took me two hours to do this" ethos.

But to dream of this party in 1960 is great fun.
