I figured out why all those stormtroopers shooting didn't take out the heroes! They were under orders to either capture them alive or let them get away so the Empire could track them to their secret base. Even Princess Leia figured that out after they got past the perimeter picket ships.

@pbanta62 Personally, I thought that because they were all clones of Jango Fett (the one useful thing to come from the prequels) they simply assumed that they knew everything he knew and didn't bother to train them, forgetting that memories are not transmitted genetically (noone wants to remember their parent's younger days) and that's why the storm troopers can't shoot for shit, though the impaired eyesight due to those helmets is a point worth conceding.

Clones were highly trained clones from a single specific bounty hunter, who was itself genetically good.

Stormtroopers were cloned from many different bounty hunters, aswell as people were joining them.

There was a great line in this film. Obi Wan was talking about the pattern of shots on a ruined vehicle, and said "Only Imperial Stormtroopers are this prescise" or something like that. The problem with this statement? The thing they had been shooting at was a fucking SANDCRAWLER.
