@kilala435 yes, that helps, i think some of the large ones also have pendulums that absorb the movement, but don't quote me on that one. but the big part is that they have really strict building codes, the actual structure of the building has to be made to withstand earthquakes. in fact i've only seen one video where there was debris falling from the ceiling and that was in a big mall. otherwise i've noticed most of their buildings stay in one piece.

@xy274 actually they thought a lot about earthquakes, their buildings are really strong, have you noticed that despite it being a magnitude 8.9 earthquake very few buildings, if any, collapsed? for the record, the earthquake that hit Haiti was around a 7.0, that's 100 times less intense than what hit Japan. this was really a huge success for japanese engineers, in my opinion.

It creates more greenhouse gas emissions than it "saves" as ordinary power is needed in spades to get it working, and it kills everybody. Despite these DISASTROUS conditions there was NO breach in primary containment and only MINOR negligible radiation was released.
The whole situation, though certainly undesirable, is VERY ENCOURAGING! Japan's nuclear professionals did their jobs well and the redundant emergency safety systems worked as designed.
This is a great testament to the dedicated men and women who work in the nuclear industry and to just how SAFE and RELIABLE nuclear power stations really are!

@kilala435 yes, that helps, i think some of the large ones also have pendulums that absorb the movement, but don't quote me on that one. but the big part is that they have really strict building codes, the actual structure of the building has to be made to withstand earthquakes. in fact i've only seen one video where there was debris falling from the ceiling and that was in a big mall. otherwise i've noticed most of their buildings stay in one piece.

This would not be the case if there had been a full meltdown. The end.

@19thSFGA Yes, there has been fuel melting. That is where the hydrogen for this explosion came from. Is that a problem? Not really. We've had lots of meltdowns with very few people hurt. TMI melted almost half the fuel. This isn't Hollywood. These plants are designed to withstand meltdowns.
How many people have died in all teh nuclear plant accidents in the past 50 years? Maybe 100 at Chernobyl? How many died in the bus accident in NY yesterday? 13. We should ban tour buses before nuke plants

@xy274 actually they thought a lot about earthquakes, their buildings are really strong, have you noticed that despite it being a magnitude 8.9 earthquake very few buildings, if any, collapsed? for the record, the earthquake that hit Haiti was around a 7.0, that's 100 times less intense than what hit Japan. this was really a huge success for japanese engineers, in my opinion.

how? 9.0(japan magnitude rounded up) - 7.0(reported Haiti magnitude) = 2.0, that means there's 2.0 orders of magnitude in difference. 10^(2) [because the Richter scale is a base-10 logarithmic scale]= 100. therefore there's a 100x intensity difference between the two quakes. QED
this is the comparison i use, the comparison my physics prof taught us, the comparison every other teacher/prof i've had has been using and it makes sense to me.

@xy274 like I said, real good planning. They should have at least made structural adaptions that allowed for major earthquakes to happen without the entire plant melting down. If that's not possible. Don't build it at all. California has nuclear power plants too. When will people learn? Some things are just not meant to happen.

Grrrrrreat.......I live in Oregon. I hope that fucking thing does not melt down.....I dont wanna be eating potassium iodide....that thing melts...the wind will sweep that shit all the way over here to the west coast and inland. And the Japanese and Chinese always downplay everything. So, Im a little worried. CNN, and the news in general. Is always full of shit. So, its either being downplayed, or hyped up. CNN is blowing it out of proportion... I was not sure about this so I did some research and found a statement by the CEO of Bruce Power...look it up. The salt water will work, but the reactor will be useless after.
FYI: Bruce Power is first nuclear plant in the world to renovate/fix their reactors (biggest engineering project in Canada right now)....they know their shit about this situation.....waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than CNN
