I didnt know that happened. The tsunami wearning thing said to evacuate Alameda, so me and my family went to Tracy. I skipped school, so that was cool too. :D Interesting though.
I hope to God you don't do a similar P.O.V. video again the next time a tsunami is headed your way. Yes, you're lucky if it comes from faraway Japan. But if the earthquake epicenter is somewhere closer to the U.S. (say, underneath the mid-Pacific Ocean), going down to the washed-out beach should be the last thing you should do. In fact, it may even be THE last thing you will ever do.
generally in a tsunami situation the worst thing you can do is walk out into the open like that. Alot of people have died doing that because for some reason its human nature to think it will not be such a large event.
Im American and I love Japanese Culture and Anime. It gives me great anxiety to see even one person die and when 10k people die I cant even comprehend it. They said that this earthquake altered the Earths Axis. I have had nightmares of Tsunamis' before. I always pictured a 100 ft wave that wiped out everything. This is more like a 10 or 15 foot flood of water. The double wammy is even if you survived the Tsunami you will have a hidden danger with radioactivity. I vote against Nuclear power!
Pretty amazing stuff, you probubly dont have many chances in your life to be almost outrun by the ocean.
A lot of people are saying your stupid, but given that it wasnt the first time youd seen it happen that day, id assume you figured it wouldnt be too bad to run out there.
3 men have been swept out to sea in california because of the tsunami because they wanted to see the tsunami. 2 made it back, one hasn't so far. The coast guard called off the search. So is your life really worth seeing this wave?
@chumaster90 I agree with you, i live in Santa Monica and i like to catch some waves since i was 7 years old, but going to the beach after a Tsunami warning is just stupid
Umm, to the old bastard who felt like Superman for the first time in 50 years: do you watch Leslie Nielsen movies? Cuz you sure sound like him. You could replace him & continue his legacy bcuz ur a real genious. Next time jump on a dingy & I'll send you $100 along with a Publishers Clearing House Application bcuz I think you'll be the 1st one to win it! And you get $100 from me & you can make Under the Naked Gun Movies & be a Super Old Hero!! An American hero!
Californian going to the beach during a tsunami. Proof once again the people out there are like a good cereal....... lots of fruits, flakes and nuts !
I have to agree with others here - it was pretty DUMB of you to walk out on a KNOWN tsunami mud flat, waiting for the surge to come in. I shut you off after about 30 seconds as your commentary only emphasized your serous lack of gray matter. BTW, any time the tide shifts, the winds normally swing around. In times of tsunamis, it happens more frequently as the wave action increases. Duh.
@1Suncatcher What the fuck are you talking about dude? What the fuck is a known tsunami flat? Is that some bullshit attempt to sound like you know what the fuck you're talking about. That shit wasn't dangerous. I know because I fucking live there! I'm glad this guy documented this, because it was interesting to see it firsthand. If anyone's DUMB it's you. You're not doing yourself any favors posting shit on youtube, but alas, your opinion does matter right?
@1Suncatcher hey dumbass, see how he says it's INSIDE THE BAY? and wtf is up with your "gray matter" remark? are you fucking retarded or is that actually a saying and therefore evidence of a large group of people being fucktards?
@1Suncatcher hey dumbass, see how he says it's INSIDE THE BAY? and wtf is up with your "gray matter" remark? are you fucking retarded or is that actually a saying and therefore evidence of a large group of people being fucktards?
I have lived on Shoreline Drive for five years and NEVER seen the tide comes in that fast. It usally takes a couple hours for the tide to come in that fast. The surge came in 500 feet within the 3 1/2 mins. This was the sixth time that morning that the surge came in and out. It cycled every 30 to 35 mins.
I don't know if the surges had anything to do with the wind. I talked to a couple of people on the beach and they noticed that the wind picked up when the surges were coming in.
@deepfreeze8 - ahem.. not sure to whom you may be referring to, but from where I was at Ballena is like elevated about 5 ft. higher than the water surface. With forecast surety that any incoming surge would be no more than about a foot inside the bay. Not a big deal. Otherwise would've headed out to higher ground. >:-\
I live on Bay Farm, about 500 feet from the Shoreline Trail, but I missed this because of the warning to stay away from the water. I figured that home was plenty close enough. On the Crown Beach side - across from me - it's usually very shallow at low tide, and you can walk way out. Yes, it's always bare-looking when the tide is out. But as someone already said, this looks like normal tide-coming-in, so unfortunately, the tsunami activity either isn't clear or not very remarkable.
I was out on that south facing (potholes dirt) frontage road on Ballena Island near the water eating my Breakfast Jack around 9:30 am. Across the inlet from Crown Beach. After about 15 minutes I saw the water current suddenly pick up showing ripples as it flowed around the bend into the Ballena boat harbor channel. It was around low tide at the time, but that was all I could see of it.
i'm guessing you saw that happen at least once already before you decided to walk out there and film it.. If I've seen the water receding, I'm going the opposite direction. Anyways, interesting footage! I'm glad it wasn't more serious when it hit our coast.
Does anyone know the city of Antioch in CA? if you do, do you know if they got hit by this tsunami??please i must know! my cousin lives there and i tried calling her all day yesterday and she wouldnt pick up!i was wondering if this tsunami hit her town. :( please im worried sick.
@strongredheadkid please dont worry. i don't know why people are throwing the word tsunami around so carelessly. As you can see from this video, any sort of tidal change associated with the earthquake is not dangerous in any way shape or form as experienced in the SF Bay Area. It's not going to rise more than a couple feet at the most.
Thank you for posting that. I live on Shoreline Drive (at Willow), just across from the bay. I can see the bay from my window but I completely missed that. I was watching the bay from about 8 to 9 AM which was when news reports indicated that the tsunami would be arriving. Nothing seemed to be happening so I went back to whatever it was I was doing. Thanks again.
@ProjectM555 Haven't you learned anything from the horrifying pictures from the 2004 Tsunami? Only a retard would stand in the "ocean" after the water pulled back! A reasonable human being would go away as far as possible and not film this shit. You're pissing me off...and btw, i didnt watch your stupid video! I stoped after 20 seconds!!
@DerErsteKanzler boo hoo. nobody gives a flying fuck if the video pissed you off or if you even watched it you whiny bitch. in case you didn't notice, he obviously watched the wave come and go a few times beforehand. dumb fucks like you piss me off ;]
I live in So Cal. I've never seen the tide that low! Does your beach normally not have many shells or rocks or did they get swept out? It looked pretty bare
@nicolcacola The beach always looks like that. The tide does go out pretty far and we're left with mud just like that. But it never goes out that far and usually takes much longer to come in.
@leejester, if you watch the whole video, you can see the actual surge. It starts out slow, but by the end, you can clearly see a HUGE difference between the normal tide coming in and this one. I also live in Alameda and I have never seen the tide come in as quickly. Watch the whole thing, it's pretty facinating.
This guy is stupid... Does he know that people die that way... by going 500 ft away from the shore and then when the smaller tsunami really hits he could be out there and he CANT OUT RUN IT!!!!!!! And if he gets hurt somebody has to save his ass!
@xxKaylaJewlersxx He knew what he was doing. The potential surge predictions for the bay were accurate. Have you considered that YOU are the one who is stupid? That's my assessment anyway.

@xxKaylaJewlersxx idk, maybe it's just a few people that know this but there's a technique called SWIMMING that some people actually know about. i think it's when you use your arms and legs to maneuver through water. just thought i'd let you in on that so you'd stop calling people stupid for playing on the beach ;)
I live at Crown Beach and walk the shore frequently. I often see the incoming tide doing exactly what you have recorded. This as a normal every day incoming tide having nothing to do with the tsunami. Please do not make something of nothing.
Great video :) Glad you're safe. Thanks for sharing this. These things can really surprise unsuspecting people on the beach who aren't familiar with how fast the water can move. Good job there :)
What time did you make this video? I was out at Point Isabel around 8:45 and didn't notice a lot of movement...but then again, I didn't really know what to look for.
@aikitherese this was shot about 11:30am during low tide. I missed a dramic white wave that went across the bay. High tide is around 5:30 PST. We are ready to catch any surges that come up on the road.
