  • The assumption that "overweight" is caused by excessive caloric intake and lack of activity is overly simplistic and a result of a culture-wide impulse to blame perceived unattractiveness and ill health on character flaws. Recent science shows that the issue is much more complex than that. It's known that statistically, "overweight" and "slight obesity" do not correlate with increased risk to health, but "morbid obesity" and "slightly underweight" do. (See "The Obesity Myth" for sources.)

  • Also to consider: fat acts as a protective substance in some diseases and conditions; many people eat horribly and are sedentary yet do not gain weight -- which argues for a strong genetic basis to how the body responds to food; and when people eat nourishing foods and are moderately active, they do not necessarily lose weight, but they become healthier. (See the HAES movement, also Linda Bacon.)

  • Also: dieting -- that is, restriction of calories inducing hunger, is widely regarded by reputable medical sources as something that for most people does not work long-term, because for it to work long-term requires permanent deprivation which psychologically most people are not prepared to do. The more food is restricted, the more efficiently bodies tend to use it, so that one can end up eating very little and still be fat. (Clearly an evolutionary strategy.)

  • Excellent food for thought. Thank you.

My video was talking to "morbid" obesity.

Yes the definition is simple, but in order to explain it quickly and to reach the most audiences I try to advocate for exercise and dieting (simply)... the rest is not too important to my message, but I recommend you make a video. You seem to know a great deal and I'd love to listen/watch.

    Be good friend.

  • Before you make a comment that is absolutely oppsite to anyone who is in the know about obesity, I suggest that you develop a profound understanding of what you are saying--before you make absolutely assinine comments. Obesity does correlate with numerous diseases. Period. This is not even debatable; so please, stop falling for feel good bullshit lies that make fat people feel good about themselves, if for only an hour or so.

  • Bluviolet, I dont want to make you think I am attacking you. But I have to further my comments by saying that you can scour the internet and find someone tell you the earth is flat. And you can find another person who has it on high authority that aliens are living in the White House. A lot of Americans are obese, and to many a savvy business person, or other agenda driven asshole, they are people to pull the wool over. Simply because they need to hear someone give them an excuse....

  • You see, people would much rather be comfortably wrong than uncomfortably right. So please open your eyes and stop making excuses for something that is entirely preventable. Dont you find it odd that most of the world is not fat? What makes you believe that its suddenly "complex" here in the USA? Bottom line, fat is as bad as smoking. Go google that, and skip past the bullshit fat acceptance sites, and go to medical journals and scholarly research...

  • hot pockets and american idol.... you really want to take those things away kalib????? :(

Well we already give welfare junkies free food, we may as well give them free healthcare... I mean shoot if they dont have to pay for anything it seems like the perfect black hole for money... encourage health problems and then proceed to pay for it... Your cat needs to quit interrupting videos or I am going to eat him... get in my belly....mmmmmm

  • LOL...

hot pockets, american idol, and my cat are all good in moderation...

  • A disease? Hardly, but it seems to have the effects the one. I agree with your sentiment about how teaching people to "accept" them is the wrong idea. Now, I'm not saying we should harm them or that making fun of them or bashing them is right, but PC is almost never the right way to solve something. I'm starting to exercise more, because I'm pretty out of shape, and the problem with me is consistency. That, I think, is a problem many people have.

  • fast if you will, only eating as much as I needed to not feel bad or sick. In a week and half, I dropped 20 lbs without exercise. If you really stick by true serving sizes on labels, (one 20oz pop is 2.5 servings for ex.) and don't snack, you will lose weight. It's caloric intake vs. burning calories. You burn more you lose, that's it. I realize my case isn't everyone elses, however obesity is self-control. Even those with thyroid gland issues etc. can do it if they try hard enough.

  • If only it was that easy. The problem is much deeper than just controlling your calories intake. Have you ever seen a drug addict go into withdrawl? It's not as extreme, but people who are obese have pretty much the same feeling regarding food. The main problem in obesity is actually in the brain, the part called the hypothalamus, which regulates body homeostasis. If a certain part of is damaged (namely the ventromedial nucleus) the person will virtually eat themselves to death.

  • Another condition, for example, is the use of anti-depression drugs in girls before they reach puberty. It actually has been shown that these girls WILL become obese after the onset of puberty. Same deal here, the drugs have a negative influence on the hypothalamus. Anything that lesions that structure (including tumors) has very drastic effects on the body as a whole, obesity is just one consequence.

Also, the food consumed in North America has chemicals that damage hypothalamus, so...

  • I understand it's not a clear cut easy answer. About the anti-depression drugs, there could be many reasons there is a correlation, but I realize with certain individuals with genetic issues and special situations there are always exceptions. If you castrate a boy chances are he will get fat. Same idea. Even so, I've been addicted to fast food, it's no different than a drug addiction really. That means it can be overcome. Some people feel hungry all the time and may choose not to eat.

  • They may choose to eat self-regulated portions based on self conscious health. Afterall, it may be better to be hungry all the time, than to be overweight, and have all the problems associated with obesity. I never said it was 'that easy' and for some it will always be harder. Many homeless people might tell you it's not easy to get off the street. Many dealers and people in jail might tell you the same. But others can't fathom their way of life. I think it's similar in many ways to obesity.

  • I guess I should be specific for you. For people without 'bad genes' and diabetes, etc., it can be very difficult to lose weight (especially diabetes where sugar must be regulated so much), but is still possible if you have a phat attitude. corny but i'm high, ya know? For people who just pack on the pounds over time like me, or sit on their ass a lot, a.k.a. Most of America, it's easier than many believe. I've had a harder time quitting smokes than losing weight when it started getting bad.

  • Well, the brain is just a part of the more this complex system. Although, I do agree with your point (addictons can be overcome, for the most part), there are other factors that play a role too. Even the biochemical reactions in the body can go against the person. The hormones and their action on the absorbtion of nutrients and their storage, as example. Also, the food (even if it's healthy home-made) is not really good in quality in North America as in other countries.

  • Yes, yes, stack the odds! I agree with you, but this seems to distract from the fact that for what, 90% or more of obese Americans, the problem is not cancer, diabetes, or thyroid glands. For most Americans, it's just laziness and eating too much. Fast food restaurants are a large TOOL that causes obesity. It's up to us to limit our use of these foods. Watch Super Size Me! anyone? That's most of americas problem.. they don't stop after 1 month.

  • Couldn't said it better myself. One thing though, (and I apologise that I keep coming back to this point, but after seeing the studies myself, and talking first hand to the researchers, I found this REALLY fascinating) the machanism of how these foods cause obesity has A LOT to do with how the chemicals of the food interact with the brain.

In terms of food quality, indeed, cheap and fast is the motto. Also used when growing farm animals, veggies and fruits = fast and high yield + bad quality.

  • Super size me was awesome btw. Love 30 days too. Very enlightening in many ways. It's sad the way food has become, and it's even sadder that I contribute! Fast food mmmmmmmm. I still eat at mcdonalds (not as often!) after watching. healthy=expensive, healthy foods don't last forever like frozen pizza rolls or hot pockets. America is becoming poorer... Will we get fatter? I think i saw an article headlined that come to think of it.. Didn't read it tho

  • As for the quality of food. It's not so much the quality of the food I think as it is the prices of the food. The quality of our food with preservatives etc. don't cause obesity so much as other things like oh say, cancer risk. But, I'd have to say it's because of the price of food. In America we are blessed with the cheapest most unhealthiest foods of all. In France for example a canned pop will probably cost over two bux. The things we treasure like pop are not so popular there or cheap.

  • That cat loves to interupt ur vid's! Losing weight can be easy if one has the will power. At 180 lbs, I once lost 20 lbs in one week for our first wrestling tournament that year. Not saying that is healthy or that anyone should try that! I hear many obese people say, "I have tried everything, and didn't lose any weight." Or, "I haven't hardly eaten anything for a week and gained weight." I don't buy it. I weighed nearly 220 at one point (fast food) and said that's enough. I went on a

  • Excellent video man. I have gained and lost over many years. I once lost 70 lbs. dieting and just lowering consumption and certain kinds of foods. I am doing it again, but i definitely don't blame anyone but myself. Healthier and more ideal alternatives and ways to eat, exercise and live exist. It is a matter of taking the initiative and taking personal responsibility for oneself.

  • Hey Kailabreece i agree with you that its not a diet. I actually hate that word diet,(life change not a diet) because if the person wants to lose weight it does have to be consistent as you said before. All these infomercials are all about in getting in the consumers pockets. I think us as Americans should look overseas at France, and Italy for example, there obesity is NOTHING like ours. I Enjoyed the video. Take care

  • The solution, eat raw food...wash off raw food with hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Stop eating any grain product. Get 1/2 hour of sunlight each day. Eat each meal ending with a table spoon of apple vinegar, it makes your stomach contract, mixing the acid so the receptors know how much more acid to produce. You will lose 2 to 3 pounds a week. If you are hungry eat more raw fruit and vegetables. You have plenty of calories, you lack nutrition.

  • That sounds easy enough... LOL. I would think those who are having obesity issues may want to start simply. :)

I however appreciate teh info... I could certainly improve my nutrition levels.

  • I have heard and read many things regarding raw foods are the best answer because nutrients are not lost as they are with cooking food. Also, it is my understanding that weight gain can be attributed to our bodies different systems being out of whack and not functioning properly to metabolize foods.
