I have a 1952 super m wide front and it has all good sheet metal but could use a tune up and a paint job....so I'm wondering what is an average price to restore one of thoes tractors...restoring gradpas old tractor would be cool...
does any one know if the original old paint have lead in it ,because i am sanding a 1956 100 and if so id like to know if i should be more cautious, thanks!
@jslinko Yes it does...in fact you can still get the replacement paint with lead, at least you could 10 years ago when we did our super m. You will be fine as long as you don't eat the chips.
very nice....my neighbor had a super m when i lived on the farm in iowa in the early 60,s....it did a lot of work for him....was not a slouch for the time ..
The super m is a very rare tractor. They only made them for about a month. Me and my dad picked one up for free from an old family friend. It needs to be restored and the engine is stuck.
i have a 1946 farmall m that my grandpaw and i fixed up to look like that you can see it on my home page clike on my name... alsom job looks brand new
AWESOME job on the super M...glad to see an interest in farmalls and IH...seems like everyone around where I live have converted to john deere...sigh!
We used Dupont Imron paint on the M. It is a very tough paint extremely hard to wet send and buff. We only used it once. Now we use Dupont Nason or PPG Omni single step paint wet sand it clear coat it and wet sand and polish again. The F 20 was done with Dupont Nason and clear coated I believe. That one had a better shine and much easier to work with. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
Thanks for the reply. I left that comment on your f20 video about the 15-30 and f20 we are doin over. We have used PPg on the 15-30 so far and it looks good. What grit do you wet sand with and how many times? Thanks
Usually after the first coat we start with 400 then 600 you can start with 600 if it is already smooth. After the 2nd coat and the final clear coart we start with 600 and then finish with 1200. Then we rub it out with rubbing compound then polish it with a foam pad and foam pad polish for th efinal shine.
Thanks, I am gonna keep this info as I have never had any previous paint jobs come out that nice. I want the 15-30 to be as nice as possible as it was my great granparents tractor. The mechanics are good but if the paint isn't right its all for nothin in my opinion.
I don't paint any of the tin work because I am not a painter. I do a lot of the prep and between coats. I can tell you the cleaner and smoother your piece is before painting the less wet sanding you will have to do. One other thing, once we get to bear metal we use those vinyl exam gloves to keep from geting hand oil on the netal. I also use them when wet sanding to keep from getting finger prints on the paint. Good luck
Great job! Nice paint, too. Only thing I spotted wrong is the distributor is the wrong one. Should be the upright version when the live hydro's are installed.
wow, that tractor looks very nice. how long did you work on it

Is the guy in the beginning wearing a John Deere hat? That would be inappropriate considering he is working on a real tractor.

@martinsuper73
Not a JD hat.

I'd swear this resto was done by Tackaberry in Athens,On. Canada. If not... the shop and area in background, look so much the same.

Actually they made a lot of Super M's they made them for 2 years 1952 and 1953. Super MTA's were only made in 1954.

Brilliant restoration job and a well made video clip too.
The Super M is still a great tractor to have, even as a "light duties" tractor.
