@oscflims Depends, I suppose if you were tracking the skateboarder you'd want to use the shotgun mode, however if you're a bit further back with them skating across the frame from side to side then you'd want to use a wider angle field.

@wakaphwap you're a retard, do u see anyone else with a life bothering to waste their time complaining about a video that does a thorough job on a specialized microphone? if u dont need the extra info fuck off stupid, moron.
Thanks for the review. It would be good to have some musical instrument in the tests. I think that is where you definitely need a better mike and where the difference is the most obvious to a built in one.
@starfedrogue Thanks. What mike do you think would be good for musical instruments? Can you get decent quality with the 1/8 connector or would I have to buy a professional camera with XLR connectors?
@martintheguitarist I've never had to choose mics for recording musical instruments so I wouldn't really know. The only mics I've used with a Canon system are this and the Rode Videomic Pro, and out of those two the Rode wins.
@wakaphwap And yet you called it a "good vid". Between this and the first version it's had nearly 40,000 views. It's referenced all over the net and has become the de facto review for that product. If you think that's a "fail" I have to wonder what your idea of success is.
@wakaphwap It has as much talking as is required to communicate the information people are likely to want to know before purchasing. Yes it's long, but starting to watch it doesn't obligate you to watch all the way through. I even put chapter markers in the description so that people can skip to the bit they are interested in. It's physically IMPOSSIBLE for me to make a video that enthrals everyone; at some point you have to take responsibility for continuing to watch something if it bores you.
Regarding the question 'automatic' or 'manual' microphone setting, I think the questioner might have been referring to the method of setting the recording level. Setting that level 'manually' or having the camera set the recording level 'automatically'. Does attaching an external microphone override that way of setting the record level? Is one forced to use the 'manual' level setting, or can the camera still function in the 'automatic' mode. This is something I would like to know as well.
Henry Rollins sure knows a lot about video production! JK, greatly informative video. Thanks for helping me make a choice and showing me some best uses.
If anyone is planning to get the Sennheiser MKE 400 mic, as you suggest as an alternative for a Canon Vixia that has the "advanced" (small) shoe, you will need an adapter for it to fit.
@CindyERodriguez Yes, this is perhaps the most irritating aspect of the proprietary Canon fit! I've been looking for alternative mics recently and I'm just glad I already own a couple of good booms.
Excellent review, thank you for posting. I have the Canon Vixia HF M31. When using the DM-100, on the camcorder do I set the microphone setting at “automatic” or “manual?”
I have a Legria HF S 11. And I wonder if this mic is so much better than the built in mic in my camcorder that it is worth buying? Thanks :) great upload!
@LenonHonorFilms No idea, I haven't used the Rode. The Rode is clearly more versatile though in terms of shot design as it can be used off-camera. I'd consider that a major advantage.
Thanks for a very useful and thorough review! So I suppose this mic is also compatible with my Legria HF-M36. But you suggest that a lavalier mic would be better for interviews? Well, they are only 1/10 of DM-100's price, and as I have an older Everio with a miniplug entry, that's good news for me. Azden EX-503, MIC-TC3, or something else? =)
@ihmeli I would absolutely see what results you get with the lav first! Canon have somewhat shot themselves in the foot with the DM-100, because as you will know different mics serve different purposes and by making the DM-100 unusable off the camera they have crippled its usefulness. The HF-M36 had the mini advanced accessory shoe and supports the SM-V1 microphone, so I assume it supports the DM-100 as well. Am I right in thinking it has no 3.5mm mic jack?
@starfedrogue You're right about M36's mini jack, it has none. I tested a (3.5 mini jack) MIC TC3 with a HD-Everio and it was no good at all, whereas DM-100 produced a beautiful sound on my Legria! I'm making a short indy document film and for that the DM-100 sound is quite sufficient. I use Everio as a second cam, but the picture is quite reddish, so there's some work to do with it later on.
@lyshaboy4 To be honest I don't know. I wouldn't recommend it even if it is possible, because both audio inputs will be recorded to the same file track and if the levels are wrong you will be stuffed. You really could do with a separate recording device for the lapel mic.
The leave rustling ruined the test. It's OK though as I am going to make a similar test video. Thanks again for this video! It is actually quite brilliant.
Purchased this microphone for very amateur use and liked your review (put horse before cart) but looks like good purchase. Am about to buy the SMV1 as well.
Oh! and just a useful tip!!! In your Chapter List in the description, you should put the time in which each of those chapters start next to them so that people looking for specific parts of the review don't have to waste time and find it manually! :) But other than that your reviews are great!
@SpeedReycer Err... there's no such camera? I wouldn't want to use this mic alone for a movie because it doesn't have the versatility you'd need. I'd want to use a combination of boomed microphones, lavaliers where I could get away with them, and a field sound recorder like the Zoom H4n.
I appreciate the trouble you've taken in re-shooting this popular video and the thoroughness of your review but rustling leaves in the background on the mic tests make it confusing to judge the effectness of the windsock! Couldn't a quieter location be used to make precise comparisons?
@Woodomain At the time there wasn't really anywhere available - using it indoors means room echo outweighs the differences between modes. The rustling leaves kind of helped though as they highlighted this mic's major weakness.
I've just ordered a lavalier mic and I am choosing between a Rode and a Sennheiser to go with my new Canon 7D. I'll be making a dedicated "microphone types" comparison video so I'll definitely want to get cleaner sound tests done for that one.
Thank you for doing both of your DM 100 videos. I went and bought the Vixia HFS 200 - two cameras, and then I bough the WD 58H wide angle lens. After watching your videos I completed the packages by purchasing two DM 100 directional mikes. These are for my very first feature movie, which I hope to post up onto various social media internet web sites. I'd like to see a review about the VIXIA HFS 200 and the WD 58H wide angle. Wish you could do those. Good job man!
@moviewatcher343 I have the wide angle lens and always intended to review it, but every time I start thinking about doing it something seems to get in the way!
I have the HF200 which is essentially the same as the HFS200 so there might be a review one day - it's such a feature-loaded camera it might take a while. My next period of time off from work is next month ;)
@fauguy23 At that price, no chance whatsoever! It'd be interesting to play with a surround sound mic but I am betting it will mainly pick up operator noises anyway.
@karnage981 I did consider shooting all of the tests again, but the noise illustrates the important point that no matter how good this mic is at cutting out wind noise and peripheral sounds it is still highly limited by being fixed on the camera. You will very infrequently have a shooting situation where you can guarantee that behind your subject there is (a) no other sound source and (b) no hard surface. That's why the boom mics illustration is in the video.
Been using my DM-100 on my Canon HF 100 for over a year now, and found it amazing.
I've used it outside, mainly videoing YouTube Gatherings; and inside, where it's usually been YouTubers performing their music.
It has performed way beyond my expectations. It's received a great deal of abuse and mishandling, stuffed into the bottom of (very full) holdalls, knocked, battered, given a rough life and has survived without problem.
It's wind shield I leave permanently attached (saves losing it).
@starfedrogue I did note in your video about possible concerns over its robustness; mine has certainly survived a great deal of physical misuse.
Really impressed with the performance of the wind shield even in quite gusty winds. That has really made a difference to my YouTube videos, many of which have been done outside.
The main weakness I've found (as you highlighted) has been its sensitivity to mobile phone interference.
Hi Starfed I have another question I would like to ask. You know that morphing you're doing between edits. You have some lovely smooth transitions. Do you use Final Cut Pro? What is the name of that transition? It happens at minute 1:01 in your video. Thank you so much for your time and response! :)
@TheAwesomeJassim You could possibly do it in post but you'd probably need specific software and a good knowledge of audio mastering (or a friend with both). The sure fire way is to avoid it in the first place, preferably by setting up a mic on a boom which of course you can't do with the DM-100. If you had to use a DM-100, you'd therefore need to think about your shooting location and subject positioning when planning the shot.
@starfedrogue hmm, yea it seems so. So if I were to record in crowded area I'd pick up a lot of "surrounding" voices. But thank you so much for responding so quickly! I usually try to avoid doing things in post though I newly got FCP. I just have to figure out how to use it.
@TheAwesomeJassim Sorry I missed this one before. If you're recording in a crowded environment I would try to use lavalier mics in addition to whatever main mic you are recording with, so you have a "backup vocals" recording. It's not hard to keep them out of shot. You might find that it's easier to get the actors to re-record the vocals later on and dub the scene than it is to try and digitally clean up audio where the problem noise is other voices.
@starfedrogue No worries, and thanks for responding! Yea, I ended up buying the DM-100 myself its been great to use :-). Would I be able to plug a Lavalier and the DM-100 into the camera at the same time? Or would I need an external recording device? Oh and the last 3 videos I've made they have been with the Dm-100
Very nicely done. The information was exactly what I need to move into the world of improved audio. I have a Vixia HF S20 and I will purchase the DM-100 based upon your review. I realize that it's still an interim step but it should significantly improve my products. Than you for taking the time and making the effort! Michael Marr, Battles Wharf Productions
Good informative video, bought this mike a couple of weeks ago for my HFS21 having viewed your earlier video. Not had a chance to test it out properly but it is a significant improvment over the in-built mike as you would expect.

@TheAwesomeJassim To be honest I'm not sure; I've not tried it yet. I have a lav on the way from Amazon so I will try it when that arrives.

Enjoying your reviews keep them coming.
