It was probably an issue with the record company. Michael would have to go through Epic/Sony to sing in the commercial, The Simpsons and the movie. It was probably done this way so there was no hassle.

I know, I don't understand it either, but the film and music industry are notorious for holding artists to some ridiculous contracts. Quite frankly, I think a lot of them are probably the most unethical, and possibly, illegal documents out there.

@humannature1993 I think it's because the California Raisins were the artist, so to speak, and MJ had a dream about them, not about himself singing. That's my view. And either way, it seems MJ was happy to do the ad. I don't think he was thinking, "Why won't they let me sing?" They might have even asked him, I don't know. Either way, the same team behind this ad did the Claymation parts of MJ's Moonwalker movie, so he might've been friends with Will Vinton, or at least admired his work.
