Great vid! I finally got to go to one of those last night! I was a bit dissapointed by the outcome, but I don't regret going in the slightest! There were too many benefits! As for next year, I'm gonna have one of my own, and that will be awesome, (granted my wallet doesn't get too empty from hopefully going to spain)
"I often find my self envisioning being the first person to step off a space ship, onto the surface of newly discovered extrasolar planet, and looking up at the sky to see beautiful moons with atmospheres that support vast oceans. Only to look down, out across the horizon, and to realize, it is teaming with diverse life. And I imagine the news reaching Earth, and seeing peoples faces as they truly think, for the first time, We`re not alone, and them realizing, humanity`s journey-has only begun."
Yuri's Night is a fantastic idea representing a man and event without question to be honored and remembered. Phil, you do an awesome job and your deep-rooted enthusiasm is contagious. We're lucky to have you onboard. :>)
Sad you don't hear a lot about Yuri's trip here in the states.
When I was growing up during the Apollo years, I was given just our astronauts, not the Russian ones. I didn't really learn of their exploits till I was in high school and could read up on the subject in more detail.
Grats Phil for posting this, it's not just a "russian" or "american" thing, it's a Mankind thing.
It's not about Yuri personally but a human representation of an event. How else do we mark an event. Children are the ones most influenced by such things and as a parent I see the value of calling it Yuri's night. Sure there was the ground crew, designers and tax payers who made the event possible but to dilute the event with it could have been this or that is, well, pointless. Also it's nice that Yuri was Russian and the Russians need to feel worthwhile too because they are. They did it!
Don't forget the brave animals that flew test flights and sacrificed their lives for space exploration. The unsung heroes.
Neil Armstrong was incredibly cool during the Apollo 11 Moon landing. He probably saved the LEM from crashing on the Moon and ending two lives, and who knows what other kinds of delays and cancellations. If I had to choose one guy who stood out from the others, I'd pick him.
Space exploration is a team effort. Respect to Yuri for his contribution and place in history.
I seriously doubt that you can compare Yuri G to Einstein, Darwin, Copernicus or Newton. Yuri G was trained to be an astronaut. If anything, he was gifted with the intelligence and courage to be an astronaut. He was not a gifted scientist, naturalist or astrophysicist. He is most like Columbus. However, we don't lavish praise on Columbus for all other discoveries made by subsequent explorers. I don't think we should do the same with Yuri G.
You've lost sight of the point being disputed. We're not talking about ranking discoveries. We're talking about name credit for being historically first. The point is you can't strip that person of their place in the history books merely because if they hadn't won credit someone surely would have later on down the track.
I am not speaking of stripping Yuri G's place out of the history books. My only beef is that Phil here in his two minute video gives Yuri G credit for influencing future discoveries and discoverers. Phil even says he "owes his whole career to Yuri G." I just think that is an unbelievably false comment. Certainly Yuri G deserves recognition for being first, but that is all. It was not because of him "that we were able to put men into space or men on the moon." Give me a break.
What about having a role model? Someone you can look up to and say, "there's someone in whose footsteps I'd like to follow. Someone whose achievements I'd like to aspire to not just equal but someday better." When our heroes set the bar they dare us to better their record and they show us the determination it takes to get there. Not one for hero worship? Sounds like a handicap to me.
I agree. Surely it was an historic moment, but couldn't it be argued that someone at some point would have done the same thing if Yuri had not gone into space? Every astronaut that goes into space is courageous. I think space exploration was bound to advance regardless who made the first step into space. Is he an important historical figure? Absolutely. Does he deserve all of this lavish praise? I don't think so.
True, all the people in ground control did their fair share too.But you gotta admit, going into a little capsule tht looks like it's been welded together from old borscht cans by a drunken smith from siberia, stuck ontop of what looked like a ironbarrel stuffed with blackpowder takes a heck of a courage in my eyes....and to think how russian space tech must've looked like back in Yuri's time.
I love it when you get passionate (about the same things that excite me).
Though I have to admit that my heart skipped a beat because when I first saw this I read it as "Uri's Night ..." I recovered quickly as soon as I refocused. :-)

First human in space. I am fairly sure that there wouldn't be nearly the enthusiasm for astronomy that there is now if we hadn't put anyone in space.
