  • Great vid! I finally got to go to one of those last night! I was a bit dissapointed by the outcome, but I don't regret going in the slightest! There were too many benefits! As for next year, I'm gonna have one of my own, and that will be awesome, (granted my wallet doesn't get too empty from hopefully going to spain)

  • hmm where have I seen this guy before...

  • @KOGR11 You have seen him on TV. The moon landing was on TV news. It's real it was on TV.

  • @blackrainbowboy yeah i realized that later, this man was the presenter for the show on asteroids.

  • @KOGR11 His bald head is nice isn't it.

  • @blackrainbowboy needs oil.

  • @KOGR11 Oil would make it so sexy.

  • The first human in outer space ..

  • "I often find my self envisioning being the first person to step off a space ship, onto the surface of newly discovered extrasolar planet, and looking up at the sky to see beautiful moons with atmospheres that support vast oceans. Only to look down, out across the horizon, and to realize, it is teaming with diverse life. And I imagine the news reaching Earth, and seeing peoples faces as they truly think, for the first time, We`re not alone, and them realizing, humanity`s journey-has only begun."

  • you do very meaningful work my friend

Respect and Admiration from beautiful BC

  • Yuri's Night - because in Soviet Russia, space explores YOU!!

  • Poehali!

  • you can quote me on this big sentence

    awesome-o!

  • Yuri's Night is a fantastic idea representing a man and event without question to be honored and remembered. Phil, you do an awesome job and your deep-rooted enthusiasm is contagious. We're lucky to have you onboard. :>)

  • Hahaha!

Anime lesbian or no, Phil does give a great talk :)

  • Phil, you are awesome.

btw even here some people place ignorant responses. Ignorance has no boundaries.

  • Good product placement in the background you have got going there!

    0_o

  • Only sad part is it was done on behalf of a totalitarian oligarchy.

  • should thank the third reich for developing technology that the soviets stole that allowed them to do anything like that.

  • really, here i was thinking that it was the ICBM's that were converted to put satellites into orbit.

  • Aw Phil, what a sweet video! *single tear*

  • the title to this video makes me laugh every time i read it

  • Sad you don't hear a lot about Yuri's trip here in the states.

When I was growing up during the Apollo years, I was given just our astronauts, not the Russian ones. I didn't really learn of their exploits till I was in high school and could read up on the subject in more detail.

Grats Phil for posting this, it's not just a "russian" or "american" thing, it's a Mankind thing.

  • Yup, lol

    Same here, too

  • Hope the sky is clear tonight! Your enthusiasm is contagious!

  • Oh, those Russians! ΄)

  • It's not about Yuri personally but a human representation of an event. How else do we mark an event. Children are the ones most influenced by such things and as a parent I see the value of calling it Yuri's night. Sure there was the ground crew, designers and tax payers who made the event possible but to dilute the event with it could have been this or that is, well, pointless. Also it's nice that Yuri was Russian and the Russians need to feel worthwhile too because they are. They did it!

  • Don't forget the brave animals that flew test flights and sacrificed their lives for space exploration. The unsung heroes.

Neil Armstrong was incredibly cool during the Apollo 11 Moon landing. He probably saved the LEM from crashing on the Moon and ending two lives, and who knows what other kinds of delays and cancellations. If I had to choose one guy who stood out from the others, I'd pick him.

Space exploration is a team effort. Respect to Yuri for his contribution and place in history.

  • Yuri's Night! Yeah!

  • I like the Russians. It's too bad the Neocon Zionist lobby constantly bashes them :(

  • If it wasn't Yuri I imagine it would have been someone else.

  • If it wasn't Einstein it would have been someone else.

If it wasn't Darwin, Copernicus, Newton it would have been someone else.

Not Columbus? Would have been someone else.

Credit where the credit is due.

  • I seriously doubt that you can compare Yuri G to Einstein, Darwin, Copernicus or Newton. Yuri G was trained to be an astronaut. If anything, he was gifted with the intelligence and courage to be an astronaut. He was not a gifted scientist, naturalist or astrophysicist. He is most like Columbus. However, we don't lavish praise on Columbus for all other discoveries made by subsequent explorers. I don't think we should do the same with Yuri G.

  • You've lost sight of the point being disputed. We're not talking about ranking discoveries. We're talking about name credit for being historically first. The point is you can't strip that person of their place in the history books merely because if they hadn't won credit someone surely would have later on down the track.

  • Comment removed

  • First human in space. I am fairly sure that there wouldn't be nearly the enthusiasm for astronomy that there is now if we hadn't put anyone in space.

  • There's no question about it.

  • Yuri was a cosmonaut, not an astronaut.

  • Thank you for that correction.

  • They mean the same thing.

  • I am not one for hero worship.

  • What about having a role model? Someone you can look up to and say, "there's someone in whose footsteps I'd like to follow. Someone whose achievements I'd like to aspire to not just equal but someday better." When our heroes set the bar they dare us to better their record and they show us the determination it takes to get there. Not one for hero worship? Sounds like a handicap to me.

  • Unoriginal and boring. Aspire to principles and accomplishments perhaps, but not people. They will disapoint you.

  • You don't think someone else would have been put in his place, and done just as well?

  • I agree. Surely it was an historic moment, but couldn't it be argued that someone at some point would have done the same thing if Yuri had not gone into space? Every astronaut that goes into space is courageous. I think space exploration was bound to advance regardless who made the first step into space. Is he an important historical figure? Absolutely. Does he deserve all of this lavish praise? I don't think so.

  • "Because of Yuri Gagarin..."

Well, he didn't do it by himself.

  • True, all the people in ground control did their fair share too.But you gotta admit, going into a little capsule tht looks like it's been welded together from old borscht cans by a drunken smith from siberia, stuck ontop of what looked like a ironbarrel stuffed with blackpowder takes a heck of a courage in my eyes....and to think how russian space tech must've looked like back in Yuri's time.

  • And Columbus sure didn't sail his ships by himself either. I'd say Yuri was more ballsy than Columbus.

  • Hmm...for a second I thought this was about lesbian hentai comics.

  • Oh, when is Laika's night!! A hero dog!!

  • Wow, I did not realize this!! Yay, YURI !!! love,p

  • Nerds are so cute when they gush. It's practically the only time it's warranted.

  • My budgie is named after him!

  • Love this, but wish you would've said 'human species' in lieu of 'human race'.

    I'm too picky sometimes, yes.

  • USED Hubble?

To re-hash a comment I made on a previous video...

    Plait for president!

  • Hey, he already is! President of the JREF. Wait, did you mean he should be president of the US? Well... there's an idea...

  • President of the US, hells yes.

Or Taoiseach of Ireland. We could use a man with a brain in his head, and a sense of humour.

  • He doesn't lie enough to be president.

  • Great man

Makes me proud to have been born in USSR

  • Yuri is my hero.

  • Yuri was the guy in the capsule, there were many many thousands of people who did it.

  • I love it when you get passionate (about the same things that excite me).

Though I have to admit that my heart skipped a beat because when I first saw this I read it as "Uri's Night ..." I recovered quickly as soon as I refocused. :-)

  • Lol, I thought he was gonna say "Uri Geller" at the end.

  • haha thought the same thing

  • A new day (night) for celebration. Thanks for the info, Phil.

  • Thanks Phil, I will share this with my granddaughter.

  • Cool vid Phil!
