  • I can still smell the urine and taste the cheap heroin...ahh good times...

  • the neon boys - what a great bandname!

  • was this recorded befor or after it was recorded with The Heartbreakers? wow, it sounds completely different.

  • I love Richard Hell. ♥ And of course this song. :)

  • You do? Too bad-- he's mine!

    -- Mrs Hell

  • sorry for posting that numerous times. im new and thought youtube was just screwing up

  • yes this is from 1973. its the original version by richard hell when he was in the Neon Boys. the first picture is the cover of the ep it came from

  • Rock, rock, rock, rock, rock and roll YouTube.

  • Yeah, there's lot of great stuff between the cracks.

  • is this the one from 1973?

  • yes. this is the original version of Love Comes In Spurts by richard hell when he was in the Neon Boys. that first picture is the cover of the ep it came from.

  • Um isn't there a Neon Boys Vinly lying around somewhere?

  • Um isn't there a Neon Boys Vinly lying around somewhere?

Yes. There's 3 Neon Boys songs on a clear 45 RPM 12" backed w/ a couple of Voidoids tunes. It's bloody scrumptious! Cheers...

  • Would that have "High-Heeled Wheels" and "That's All I KNow (Right Now)" and the Voidoids' tunes "Time" and umm ... "Don't Die"?

I have that ... unfortunately only in mp3

  • That's the one. Great piece o' wax. Cheers...

  • sounds like velvet underground. fucking superb

  • andreandeahh

Funny thing, my thought exactly. It sounds just like the Velvets, although Verlaine reminds me of Dylan vocally.

  • You know that this is Hell singing, right?

  • I like the voidoids version about 10 million times better.

And yes, Richard Hell did look like a young Bob Dylan.

  • Is it me or does Richard Hell look like Bob Dylan on this cover?

  • this version sounds a bit like Dylan in is "Highway 61 Revisted" album

  • don't listen to Richie from Hell, but that version is nice:))

  • The Neon Boys ! :) WTF... Richard Hell & Voidoids did song called Love comes in spurts too but its totally different song... This is good also.

  • I may be only a 14 year old. But I know punk, today's crap-nothing.I like Television,Ramones,Clash,Sex Pistols,Richard Hell, good stuff... if only I could have nastalgia for it.

  • Kid, you just gave me reassurance that there's hope for the next generation. Whatever anyone tries telling you, punk/new wave from the late 70s trumps anything contemporary in artistic style, intensity and intelligence.

  • Don't worry... I know.

  • well thats not gunna help the scene is it? bare bands about now that are just as good/if not better then the bands back there, pffft your loss mate

  • don't brag about it, go out a start a snotty rock and roll band, and change todays "crap-nothing".

  • who gives a shit u elitist cunt

  • What do the Sex Pistols have that Shellac doesn't? Snotty British accents.

What does Shellac have that the Sex Pistols don't? A bassist, for one.

Don't let him fill you up with his lies, kid! There's still hope that you can make it new for yourself and not be one of those past worshiping punks. Past praising punks are musically confused.

Oh, and thank you for the video. I found this and live Captain Beefheart without even trying! The computer is an amazing instrument.

  • Yeah. I think I may have to invent a time machine. You can borrow it if ya want.

  • tomlyoldhappyderek1

You could've been me talking, 'cept I'm 16. The unspeakable garbage out there today for the most part, I miss the 70's NY/London scene though I wasn't alive back then. Richard Hell, Clash, V.U., Pogues, Pistols .... I dunno where it all got lost. I wish I could've spent just one night at CBGB & OMFUG when the Voidoids were taking the stage .... unfortunately that's somewhat unlikely to occur for quite a few reasons, not least that said club has been killed. Rock on anyway :)

  • I never understood why Television and Hell were "accused" of being influential to punk or post-punk. Hearing The Neon Boys I do. Hell's vocals are absolutely great, very innovative and intense. Verlaine's guitar deliberately clumsy, yet brilliant. This is the real start of it all, I guess. Or it would be the even earlier Modern Lovers' song "She Cracked" (but I won't).

  • SOMOGYI8230-

If you get a chance check out Richard Hell's 2 CD album "Time." Really cool early versions of songs with the Voioids, Heartbreakers et al. You'll get an even better picture of his influence.

  • that song sounds so garage here. I like it better.

  • Wow, thats a REALLY different version of Love Comes In Spurts than what I've heard! Thanks! And yeah, most kids today dont know punk. It was a "scene" that ended before they were born. But the music is just rock n' roll with the fat trimmed off. Chuck Berry was punk IMO. Today "punk" means putting on airs and saying nothing...

  • Great song title!

  • wow...i just started to get into 70s *punk* its not *punk* like kids now say punk is.. punk now is just buzz notes random screamning. i can honestly say back then like allways people from the 70s knew how to play. and now i understand why my friend would call kids *punks dead kids* because like allways older music and style is more meaningful i can honestly say that kids now use *punk* to be something and dont understand its raw value i wish more bands played like this now

  • Enjoy it, you're in for a hell of a ride. If you haven't already try purchasing Richard Hell and The Voidoid's "Blank Generation" album, I guarantee you'll love it.

  • Tom Verlaine has signature on his guitar playing and voice. give one tone from any of his songs going back to 1975, 1978 and one will for sure recognize the Tom Verlaine signature. He is definitely the greatest musician that will take one to vast levels of cosmic manifestation and intelligence. Thank You TV the brilliant light in sound and form.

  • Thanx for uploading this rarity, a rare chance to hear Tom Verlaine & Richard Hell together. Classic New York Punk. They sound like The Velvet Underground!

  • Tags are amazing. =)

  • sounds kind of like dylan fronting the stooges...well vaguely.

  • more than vaguely, I think

  • Whatever it is, it works.

  • richard hell doing a bob dylan impression on the record and the cover photo

  • wow this song changed a lot

  • it sounds a lot like High heeled wheels although i guess verlaine was still pritty new to playing guitar, So he'd yet to find were he wanted to be, although you can definitly hear similarities in the guitar piece in this and the one in marquee moon.

  • Your absolutely right. Also both his solos on "That's All I know Right Now" and "High Heeled Wheels" are pretty comprehensible, but yeah I think "High Heeled Wheels" later became "You Gotta Loose" for Richard Hell .

  • The guitar playing is my favorite part, its just different. Plain different.
