This sure gives me goosebumps. Not just J.D's voice but to hear a man of that age and all those years of experience behind him quoting a scripture that obviously holds a wealth of meaning for him.
I've worked with and picked behind some of the greatest entertainers in the business and I thought that I had grown used to emotional renditions of all types of music; but THIS GAVE ME GOOSE BUMPS and few tears on my cheeks. This shows the TRUE power of the word, presented by the master through we mortals. Thank GOD for the Sumner family.
@Reformation77 ... the piano player on that video is Milton Smith. He played with the Stamps and later with the Singing Americans among others... a great piano player.
The Live at Murray State album contains a medley of Praise/Let's just praise The Lord/Alleluia. It is awesome. That album is the only place in which I have heard it.
I have a singing group and I used this story to introduce our song, "I Have A Friend Above All Others". I am a big fan of J.D. Sumner and the Stamps. When I was 8 years old, my parents bought me their concert, "Live at Murray State" I still have that album from 1973 and it is in near mint condition and this song is one of my favorites on the album because of this story. I pattern my bass singing after my Dad and J.D. I've lost them both but I try my best to keep their sound alive.
Glad you enjoy the Stamps. Just to clear one thing up for you. The "Live at Murray State" was recorded in June 1975 during the Stamps-Blackwood-Speers School of Music. It was the most awesome time I had for the summer. The three weeks at the school was great! Too bad that the school couldn't be going again. We could use that training now for those wanting to go into Southern Gospel. And I miss JD too.
Live @ MS is one of my all-time favorite recordings; I have had the vinyl for 34 yrs and just recently found the cd on the net. I let my brother borrow it and he doesnt want to return it, lol. I just wish there was a video recording of same. Or some downloads here on YT.
I gave you 5 star's, becouse thats as meany as they had. But let me tell you this song and video is worth 100's more. It brought a chell down my spine and a tear to my eye. It is so beutifull, Thanks for sharing this with me.
that is larry strickland. he is married to naomi judd. and is also the bass singer of Palmetto State Quartet. if u look them up,, you can here more of him.he is my favorite bass singer. and i totaly love this video
Do you mean the bass singer who is singing? He is Larry Strickland, he sang with J.D. some years ago. The bass singer who does the recitation is JD Sumner. He died in 1998.
I loved JD Sumner and the Stamps I loved this version of The Lord is My Shepherd. I love the song Ole Man Death on "The Final Sessions" I Can Feel the Touch of His hand. I can only say that I pray that this will touch your hearts the way it touched mine. God's blessings on you and your loved ones
Elvis' soul had been given to the Lord many years before his death. Regardless of the accounts of the later years of his life, trust and belive Elvis had a plae in heaven awaiting him. He's singing in God's choir....
from lizzie Elvis was truly saved but just like all of us he had histrials ,dont forget we are not perfect just forgiven sinners and Elvis was the same but truly loved his Lord
@choosdad You are so right. The saved are "children of God", by adoption, through repentance. The prodigal son was still a son. Ephesians 1: 13 & 14, Ephesian 4 29-31, 2 Corinthians 1:21 & 22, John 6:39, John 10: 28 & 29. If you haven't read it get Charles Stanley's Eternal Security Can You Be Sure.
This clip is so very moving and as a point of interest, I told the story of the orator & the 23rd Psalm on Sunday dring a message at my Church in North London. I have known the Shepeherd of the Psalm since 1959 and I have always proved Him to be the GOOD Shepherd. Thanks for sharing the clip. God bless you.

I loved hearing Donnie sing this song - and of course J.D.'s story of knowing Psalm 23 vs knowing the Shepherd. Thanks for posting these great songs.
