@ c0wnbread - I think it's more like the drive in has been converted to capture, as you say, social rejects. I think it could also be a metaphor for being trapped by entertainment.
I read the plot synopsis on wikipedia, its sooo stupid but I still feel like I wanna watch it anyway. apparently the Drive in is a Concentration Camp that the government disguised as a Drive in Theater where they capture "social rejects". lol according to Wikipedia at least.

1984 to 1986. The Drive-In location was real and run until 1980 when closed for demolishing, run by Star Light corp the film was all based around the area of Matraville. Today the Drive-In land still remains with Town House's on the site. The start of the film has a Service Station still at the same location.
