Let me get this straight: if some composition used in any popular culture (yes, Godfather3), you CAN NOT perform it professionally any worse than it was in that popular movie. Right? So. In Godfather, there was unknown performer and me, who is ignoramus, liked it better.

Seeing these Sicilian words in print makes me very proud of my Sicilian heritage; I grew up thinking that I spoke Italian, only to be shamed by the snobbery I've encountered, into realizing otherwise. Today, I am teaching myself proper Italian, but have also come to appreciate that the Sicilian Dialect is not only valid, but the product of Sicily's tormented past and survival of conquest and occupation by other nations; as with most language, it has evolved into a "living ethnic history".

I dont understand the words, so i dont know what they are saying exactly, but with music like this understanding the language is trivial, as the singers or actors can really bring the message over the borders of languages. I dont know what it is, but every time i hear the intermezzo for this opera i get an extremely strong emotional feeling and it's almost impossible to keep from crying.

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree it helped make the movie much much better. The best scene in it is that magical shot of Palermo at night while Cavalleria's oberture comences.

Herbert Von Karajan is the best conductor because he can feel how the music is supposed to sound in his soul. I own this recording of Cavalleria Rusticana and it is by far the best one I have heard. Really stunning!
