  • im a guitar player, and im also experiencing this DQS for a week now, well,i have no available dumbell here, any alternative weights aside from dumbells?

  • Comment removed

  • Interestingly, isometric low weight regimen didn't help or hurt my case. However, had phenomenal success w/stretch & hold techniques for neck, shoulders & back & some routines learned via Alexander technique. I'm trying to post my story on any site related to de Quervain, esp. when it comes to surgery & Cortisone shots. I went through everything except surgery & after speaking to a sports physiologist I realized, in my case, was too focused on just hand/wrist. Don't jump to surgery.

  • yo 300 did the shot have any effect on the DQS?

  • @JsusWearsPrada yes, but for me that effect was short-term.

  • Hi, thanks for the video.

I think I have DQ for awhile now, like 10 months or more from my last job, where I had to grip a whole bunch of heavy boxes and started getting pain in my wrist and thumb area. Man, the pain still hurts every time I pick up anything! Even like one ounce items and then turn my wrist in any direction there's like a needle pain in my wrist. My grip is like crap.

I need to buy 5lbs weight and give this shot. I got 10ibs weight, but I think its way too much for me.

  • @chocoboblue99 You may also want to look into Alexander techniques. I've had great success with stretch/hold routine for upper arm, shoulders, neck, back (see other posts). It may less of a localized condition. I tried everything except surgery, found out it's less about immobilization & treating only wrist/hand/fingers. Back massage may also help. But certainly do your homework, be careful & don't jump to shots or surgery.

  • @toonerschooner Thanks for the reply.I'll look into the Alexander techniques. For me it's mostly the wrists that hurt. I have tried using rubber band training to train my fingers, which supposed to help the wrists. But I don't know maybe helped a bit, also with the reverse dead lift as in the video.

I tried some stretches for the wrists, which kind of help.

The only thing I haven't done really is stretch/hold routine for strengthen my arms, shoulders, or neck, which I guess I tried next.

  • Hi i was just wondering if pushing down on things and having pain is a sign of dequarveins? After my first shot wore off i started having pain whenever i would press down on anything please has this happened to any of you is that a symptom of dequarveins?

  • @WorldsBestWife1 Hey, sorry it took me awhile to get back with you. Yes, pressure on the tendon hurt a bit for me, I think. Also immobility was a problem. It was so long ago I can't recall exactly.

  • @WorldsBestWife1

Pain when pushing down on things? I have this when I start typing for 30 mins or more. I try to take like a min or 2 break when I feel this. I know it only helps a bit, but it's better then nothing.

DQ is also mostly for the thumb and that area. If you have pain in the other 4 fingers, you might have hand tendinitis instead of just DQ itself or both.

  • did the pain ever come back?

  • rico!!!

  • After 6 days of exercising the pain got worse . I guess i'm gonna hope it will pass all by itself .

  • I'm gonna try it starting from today .

  • I only feel pain in my wrist when I push on something flat handed (pushing open a door). I can no longer do pushups with flat hands instead I have to hold a dumbell like a handle or make a fist and I wear rings! What exercises can I do to help my wrist allow me to be flat handed for weight baring exercises...ie YOGA!!??!!

  • @Charley711away711

I got pain in my wrist too, but I can't make a fist anymore or I get more pain from it. Looks like you can still make a fist and that's good.

Looks like you still doing Yoga and that's good, but don't do any exercises that put a lot of strain on your wrists. That's will causes more damage and add to the problem. Only light pressure is good for stretches, but NOT IF THERE'S PAIN.

  • I can't believe there are so many of us suffering DQ!

thank you for this video - anyone else suffering DQ needs to check out this video here!

    watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5WIu9hqFWkM#at=127

    thanks for this, BROFIST

  • Dude ur awesome, ty for this...cheers

  • tnx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hugs!!!

  • hey, thanks a ton for this video. I took an anti-inflamatory for a week, stopped doing the motion that probably started it all, used a splint for week and a half maybe, and did this excercises. I'm entering my 3rd week since I had the problem and it's almost completely gone. I only pain when moving the hand inwards and using the thumb outwards, other than that, I have no problems in general. It used to hurt shaking hands with someone, but not anymore!

Again, thanks a lot for sharing this!

  • Hi I got DQ playing tennis. I stumbled upon this video. Thanks a tonne. Just started this exercise today. I have been wearing the splints for the last couple of days and it did help to a certain degree.

Although I started the stretching as instructed in the video just today, it feels I have about 30% relief already. I will continue the exercises and keep you posted. Thanks again. ( I hate going to doctors)

  • Hey 300, I also have DQ and are trying this exercise right now.

Just one question.. Did you do this exercise every day, or did you take days of to let your hand rest?

  • @hardcorepiet I can't remember for sure. I think it may have been every other day.

  • You mentioned that you got this exercise from an article...could you post a reference to that article? I'd like to know more about it. Thanks!

  • Great post, Thanks for creating this information video

  • Would love to try this, but flexing my wrist that way (which is nearly exactly the Finkelstein test you do to determine whether or not you have De Quervain's tenosynovitis) is *agonizing*. I'm scheduled for the surgery next Friday. Looking forward to using my guitars again, too!

  • Thanks 300...........This whole DQ crap really hurts. I got it while carrying my daughter. I have gotten a total of 2 shots in 8 months and problem keeps coming back. I will try your method.

So 15 reps is 1 set? 3 sets a day? Does it matter what time of day? Should I have it spaced out through the day? Should I ice it after wards.

You have given me hope buddy.

    Thanks.

  • @arizamarcos1 sorry it took my awhile to respond. I did 15 reps in one set, took a minute or so to rest, did a second set, took another minute's rest, and did the final set. I did ice the area, but I don't recall doing it right after doing this exercise.

  • @300spartansgym - Hi and thank you so much for these advices. I have this same problem except I don't feel pain when putting thumb and middle finger together. Painful area is around the inner side of my wrist (not sure what that bone is called, like a bump) and my thumb. I am 100% sure I got it extensively using my Xbox 360 controller (right analog stick) while playing games. I am following your advice (second day today). Is it normal to have this pain in my wrist when doing these stretches?

  • @meeyaomestan I too have this syndrome due to console gaming also affecting my right hand. Thought it would go away after some time, but i have had it for 2 months now :( Guess ill give this exercise a shot. Has it helped for you at all? Cheers and hope you get better mate.

  • @mtbik3r -Hi there! I'm just wrapping up my first week of doing this exercises, so can't tell much... but I can tell I feel a way better after doing them. The most difficult part is first few exercises because it was pretty painful stretching those tendons. Second day doing them, I didn't feel a thing. It was so much easier. Last few days, I can feel the pain in my wrist almost completely gone, but the only thing that's still bugging me is when I wake up, my wrist is kind of stiff first 15 mins.

  • Hi!

I have DQ syndrome, I think it is severe, because when I start doing the exercise I only can to pull donw a very few degrees, the tendon is very stiff and it hurts.

I have been doind this exercise for 2 days and I will continue for one month.

    I will post my results.

    Thank you!

  • Thank you!!! I am miserable! I see a guitar in the background!!

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • this exercise proves eccentric training works in muscular strains

  • I'm a dancer and started having issues with tendonitis...I'm pretty sure it's this form but my Dr isn't sure. I can't touch my thumb to pinky without pain and if I touch where the tendon is it hurts so badly. I'm gonna for sure give this a try...can't hurt.

  • Thanks...pls also include keywords for pregnant and post partum moms. I started having problems at 37 weeks pregnant in my right wrist, then 1 week after I delivered the problem began in my left. Not fun with a 7-lb newborn! I believe the cause is "extra fluid" that moms retain in/ after pregnancy. My problem decreases over the course of the day, so I will try your exercise at night. I also find that ice and wrist splints help to a degree. Good health and good luck to all!

  • I'm not a doctor either but my PT just told me to stretch it with the thumb tucked under the other fingers, similar to what you are doing but without the weight. I would imagine strengthening should come after there is a period of no pain.

  • Posting again. If it appears twice my apologies. Will try this right away. I wanted to know if during the time you were doing the excersise you also used ice, something like ibuprofen and creams (such as bengay).

  • @ecastro33 I was told to ice it each night for 10 minutes. Instead of using weights my PT told me to stretch it at first with the thumb tucked under the fingers (same as the test used to diagnose it). also massage the muscle parallel to the thumb in the thick part it's quite sore as well.

  • Will give it a try and let you know. Sounds like it has done wonders for quite a few people. Question.. while doing this excersise, did you also apply ice to your thumb/wrist? did you take ibuprofen (or something similar)? did you use creams such as bengay?

  • @ecastro33 I did sometimes ice the wrist during my battle with DeQuervain's, but I can't recall if I ever iced in after doing this exercise, specifically. I did not use any creams.

  • @ecastro33 I have de Quervain's right now. this is my third attack this year after two cortisone inections in January and April...

  • thanks so much, i hope this helps im a mechanic an my hands an wrists are my livelyhood

  • im going to try what u have shared, i have so much pain right now, hope it will work or else next week im going to have a surgery.... thanks dude

  • OMG thank you so much! I'm a cake decorator and I already got the shot in my wrist and the pain has returned :( but I'm gonna try these exercises tomorrow. Thanks again!

  • regular prescription for any strengthening exercise is three sets of 10 once a day. Start off with a COMFORTABLE weight size. A hammer is a good object to start with-hand beside mallet-and continue working your way down the handle as your pain allows you to. then ice your wrist for 10 minutes. Also, gentle PAINFREE stretches for your wrist would be beneficial as well. (make a fist-with your thumb in the fist, then use your other hand to move your injured hand down toward your pinkie finger side

  • @DShym and 300spartansgym Thanks so much for the suggestions. I am really hoping that these exercises and stretches, ice, Advil, and a good wrist brace will help me avoid a second cortisone shot...or worse, surgery.

  • hey, no as long as you are performing this exercise without any pain then you'll be ok. No exercise should ever be painful... if it is then you are putting yourself at risk for further injury. What you are doing with this exercise is strengthening/training your muscles to be able to do the same thing that just hurt you, so that in the future you'll be able to do those same actions without hurting yourself (because now you'll have the strength/training to do them)

  • Hey 300, just saw ur video and I have the same problem! not as severe as you though. I was really starting to get depressed cause nothing seemed to work and I love to play guitar AND I'm a music major. You gave me some hope :)

Because I don't have it as bad as you do you think I should skip to the 8 pound weight? Or do you think I should try the 5 pound first to feel it out?

    Thanks!

  • @wylde8 Usually lighter is better, but I don't want to make any guesses at what weight would be right for you. If you have questions, try to find someone qualified who can treat you in person. All I can say is that this exercise worked wonders for me. Best of luck!

  • @300spartansgym Just started your exercise yesterday and already I feel a slight improvement :). A doubt comes to mind though, you said 3 times/day, 15 reps per set, does this mean you did 3 sets per day? In other words how many sets would you do for each of the 3 times you picked up the dumbbell?

Again thank you so much for sharing this!

  • Wow. Thanks for the video! I have had a fairly mild DeQuervian's for a few years now - just a slight pain when I play an instrument. I think the main reason it hasn't healed is because I keep playing music and won't let it rest properly. Still, I've been to three different physios and not one showed me this. I'll start tonight and let you know in a few weeks if it clears.

Did you do this exercise during a period of rest, or were you able to play guitar at the same time?

  • @warbread By the time I started doing this exercise, my DeQuervain's was severe enough that I could not play at all.

  • I started a similar exercise yesterday. Instead of a dumbell I placed my thumb inside closed fist and stretched downwards. I did not just restrict it to the negative stretch as I brought my wrist back to start position on it's own.

My tendon feels very stiff today, but I plan to carry on doing the exercise as you have described it. Did you have a lot of stiffness too at first?

I also have trigger finger on the same hand. I'm no musician, just overdid some gardening!

    Thx so much 4 post

  • @ThereAreNoAnswers No, I don't recall having any stiffness after performing the exercise. I think that avoiding the concentric portion of the rep was key to its effectiveness for me.

  • I have just been diagnosed with de Quervain's and have had two cortisone injections. The first one made it dissapear completey - but it returned in three months..this second shot hasn't done as well. I'm going to try to exercise.

  • Will be trying this out ASAP. I just got this DQ about 3 weeks ago... Ill report back in a few weeks and let you know how it goes.

  • I just made an appointment for my second injection in 4 months for next week. I will try this while I am waiting. I am a freestyle swimmer and started getting DQ a few years ago. It became unbearable in January of this year. The first shot was wonderful until about a week ago. I hope this works instead!

  • thanks for posting this. so far its the only "natural" treatment i couldfind!

  • Thanks SO much for sharing this. I am a professional guitarist and have been dealing with DeQuervain's since last summer. Of course I tried physical therapy but nobody showed me an exercise like this. I have been doing it for about 2 weeks and I have seen a HUGE improvment. I am so grateful to you for posting this.

Do you know of a book about eccentric exercise that covers exercise for other body parts?

    Thanks again! from Connecticut

  • @acousticblend I don't know of any books on this topic. Sorry. I am glad to hear you are feeling better, though!

  • I am going to give this a try. I've had 2 cortisone injections and I have signed up for the surgery but I will give this a try instead at least for a month before any other treatment. Thanks!

  • hey to all.. i'm a physio and what you are doing here is not stretching, but rather eccentric muscle training (ie. strengthening your muscle as you are lengthening it).. most tendonitis's or tenosynovitis's are caused by either an eccentric injury or repeatative overuse.. and yes this is one of the main treatments for DQ..

  • @DShym Thanks for the clarification. You are 100% right and I am glad you chimed in. But I have to say that this exercise is not, in my experience, a common treatment for DeQuervain's. I saw a general practitioner, an active release therapist, a massage therapist, an acupuncturist and an orthopedic doctor. None of them ever mentioned anything like it to me.

  • Hi DShym, one question for you: if the cause of DQ is an eccentric injury (or repetitive eccentric lowering), do you think this exercise could make the problem worse? Thank you so much for sharing your experience, 300spartans. Glad you're healed!

  • My doc is no help. Pain for years. Relief...wow. thanks for sharing info

  • Will try this, at my wits end with DQ. Thanks...

  • Thanks for taking the time to put this video up, I had DeQuervain's in my Right wrist some years ago, in a brace, anti inflam's, lots of poor physio, eventually I had to quit my job,and I was unemployed for 4 months tilll I was cured via a steroid injection,--- resting the muscles did nothing... I was never informed about excercising/stretching them? I now have DeQuervain's again in my left arm, I will try these excercises and give you my feedback, many thanks

  • Thank you very much! This is just great! I almost had to quit my job after 1 year! After only two weeks i was nearly free of pain! Greetings and thank you from germany!

  • @flaaaa That's great. Thanks for letting me know!

  • I have been doing this for about a week now. I am seeing results. I have a question. Do you still do this or anything else for maintenance? Just wondering because you said you have no more pain years later. Thanks.

  • Very, very rarely (like once every three or four months) I will do a couple light sets of this exercise if I have a few minutes at the end of a weightlifting workout.

This is just a preventive measure. I don't need to do it.

  • I do endless alternate picking for playing guitar with a thumb pick. My pain is around the palm, the thumb joint closest to the wrist and in between the web of the thumb and index finger, does anybody think this is DQ syndrome? I don't want to hear the word doctor either. Thanks

  • It's hard to diagnose someone over the Internet, but that doesn't sound exactly like what I had. My pain and immobility were mostly in the thumb tendon, running down my thumb and into my wrist.

  • hi, I'm suffering from dq for a year. I hv tried parafin ultra sound, massage ad injection. I was out of pain for 3 mos but it came back. my doctor says tha surgery is the only solution that i'll be out of pain. but i dont like surgery.... thanks for the vedio. i will try this...

  • working for you yet?

  • do you rotate a wrist when doing this exercise?

are you doing other form of treatment: ice, cross friction massage with this exercise?

  • No, my wrist did not rotate at all while doing the extercise. It went straight up and down. While I had the tendon issues, I sometimes iced the joint, but it never seemed to help me much.

  • I am going to see an orthopedic tomorrow...I've playing clarinet for 14 years and it has unfortunately taken it's toll =(

  • Sorry to hear that. Good luck.

  • I already tried all known methods, but surgery, and nothing really worked. Got nothing to lose if I try 300's! ;)

I spotted your Strat in front of book shelves and wonder if you aquired DQ due to pick holding, like me.

Thanks for your help, dude. Hope it works.

    Take care.

  • Yeah, I don't think the guitar playing helped. I don't think it was the only factor, though. Best of luck.

  • I have DQ, and my wrist ache is close to unbearable if I just think about doing the movement you suggest. What I wanna know is if you did this in pain or not, at first.

    Sorry for my poor english.

  • Yes, I did have a some pain with the exercise, but I wouldn't say it was unbearable. If you have any concerns, please consult a physical therapist or someone who can examine you in person.

  • Oh, I did it, dude. Several times. Like you, I tried all possible treatments, but nothing really worked. Anyway, got nothing to lose if I try yours. ;)

I see ur a musician like me, spotted your Strato in front of book shelves, and bet you had DQ due to pick holding, like me.

Thanks for your help and kindness.

    Take care.

  • Unbelieveable!!!!.....from Saskatchewan, Canada....I happen to find this video when I was searching for information regarding my very sore wrist and thumb. I have tried the exercises for 2 days now and the results are truly amazing....my doctor had recommended surgery and I have been suffering with this for months....I woke up this morning with very little pain. Thank you so much for taking the time to post this- I am sure that many people will be helped by this.....

  • f11bz, that's great! Thanks for letting me know.

  • Thanks much for posting this. I'm going to give this a shot starting today and buy that 5lb weight. I know you're not a doc, but so far the ones I've spoken to have let me down unfortunately. Anyways, hope this works.

Also, did you do any icing along with this exercise or was this basically all you did for the 3 weeks? Did you have inflammation too? Thanks!

  • I did some icing of the area at night, but I had been doing that before I began doing this exercise and it didn't seem to help much.

  • PROLOTHERAPY

is the only sensible, permanent cure for this

    1 treatment ... = cured forever . . . .

cortison et al = crap .... PROLO is the way to go

  • I'm scheduled for surgery next month. I'm going to try this. Maybe I will be able to cancel my surgery! Thanks!

  • Good luck!

  • THAAAAAAAAAANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!! it totally worked for me! i was really close to thinking of getting a cortisone shot cause my right wrist has been hurting really bad for almost 2 months... i splinted it, took anti inflammatory meds, iced it and nothing worked... but after i watch your video and tried it, i had instant results! the next day it improved drastically! now the pain is almost gone! just after 3 days! thanks a lot man!!!!

  • Glad you're feeling better. Thanks for letting me know!
