When you work up to lifting heavy weights you can wear a belt to help support your back. But I do all my light and moderate weight sets with no belt to build up the lower back and core muscles without the assistance of a belt.
to increase the ROM (range of motion) more than an inch or two: if you use say, 20kg plates, check if the same load will fit on the bar with 10kg plates. the smaller the diameter of the largest plates on the bar, the closer to the floor the bar goes - thus greater range of motion. for example, this gentleman could have fit twice the amount of plates, if each plate were half weight, and had several more inches ROM.
