In addition to the Spring Ball (three guesses what it does), there's also a powerup called the X-Ray Scope, which allows you to see which walls have something behind them, including secret passages. That'll make your life much, much easier.

Did you try investigating the left of it? There seems to be an empty square on the map, and I think I saw a half-visible door in the walls. Maybe it's just my eyes, but try it.

There is a power-up that will let you jump as a ball, Spring Ball.

But oddly, it didn't show up in the original game until near the end.

It was renamed the Jump Ball :P and merged with the Hi-Jump Boots in the GBA games.

It doesn't look like a powerup. If I remember correctly, that's a fly-farming spot, so it might just be several powerups stacked on top of eachother.

there is also the x ray scope which lets you see alot of hidden things eg a power bomb block or one of those obscure pathways in the ceiling, but not all things get revealerated

you dont even need mr grapple to get up that wall, wall jumping is faster
